  • A new £161m platform zero and supporting infrastructure is currently being constructed that will open up to passengers in early 2021 to provide much needed extra capacity to help meet the city’s rail travel demand. In addition, we have also recently modernised the station’s main concourse to improve the environment and passenger experience, including a new expansive glass façade entrance-way and transparent roof.

The original budget for the last remodeling was £165m. This included all track from the viaduct in the East as far as Copley Hill and Armley in the West including the embankment and the E&F lines which sit on it, a dozen bridge decks, complete resignalling, transfer of Church Fenton and Stourton boxes to York IECC, and a complete station rebuild. The final total ended up at £225m which at the time was a shocking overspend. This current scheme just goes to show how ridiculously out of control costs have become since then even with inflation.

Foxtrot707 When I wrote my comment two months ago, construction projects (for everything that wasn’t considered essential works) was virtually at a standstill. Obviously now (May 2020) it has been allowed for workers who can’t work from home (including non-essential construction) to return to their jobs.

Foxtrot707 I know that essential NR track works have been scheduled and completely around the country. But I’m talking about Leeds station specifically.
I’m not sure about how the works plan has changed in Leeds, but Stevenage Platform 5 (to give a similar example) has been delayed due to it being non-essential.

So the new platform 0 at Leeds will allow trains from Bradford Forster Square, Shipley, Skipton, Ilkley and Harrogate to terminate at platform 0 and to help end the bottleneck for trains coming in & out of Leeds railway station.

The cost of any rail project these days, is eye watering. Even minor schemes cost £ millions ! British Rail weren't perfect, but they did manage to open stations like Deighton, for £ thousands and it's almost the same station today as it was forty years ago, so that was good value for the money.
The East Coast electrification was done on the cheap, which wasn't ideal. However, BR did show that things could be done for sensible prices by doing things "in house" much of the time !

Ironically platform 0 is next to platform 1 which not so long a go was platform W! (It was split in to two half Wa and Wb...but no Wc!...)As that was a additional platform added after station rebuild and new 1 2 and 3 platforms!....confused!...may be plat 0 will get absorbed in to numbering system in future if platform 18 19 and 20 get built over the other side by the canal....but may be not at tall no due to down turn coz of c19!
Just not a case of remembering platforms with new stickers....but all signaling needs changing with electric interlocking etc

The money should have been spent on widening platforms 1 and 2 which are so narrow you cannot get up them for disembarking passengers. Missed many a train because of this. This new platform is yet again too narrow to allow two streams of commuters to pass each other.

I no longer live in Leeds so I've just wasted 3 minutes of my life on a video.... Meanwhile, Crossrail in London is way behind and cost a 4 billion more than originally planned and Leeds gets a few million to "improve" the station. Doesn't seem fair does it?
