  • I know this is a fruit really, but I thought more people treat it as a veg.
This was a fun unusal veg to grow, but not one that will find it's way into our every year growing on the smallholding.
It is easy to grow, but the fruits are slightly tough and not that tasty. Fun as something completely different, but you'd be hard pushed for anyone to say they're their favourites. I should imagine I'm going to have seedlings everywhere next year though as they fire out everywhere!
I'd love to know your favourite unusual fruit or vegetable to grow! I have three talks on the subjects and I'm always looking for more things to try in my garden.
    Thanks for watching!

I'm sure the kids loved them. Do any wildlife eat these in your area?

No, not that I've seen anyway. I'm not sure I'll grow them again!

@MartinaSchoppe and tastes similar! 🤣🤣🤣 nah, really it tastes just like an achocha. Fun as a novelty though.

Do they have a country of origin? Do the residents use them as food, they do seem to be a weird fruit/veg?

@nigelcleaver great question which I had to do some research - The plant is endemic from Southern Mexico through Colombia and Ecuador.
I can't find much on eating them though, no native dishes, but willing to be proved wrong. They're just a bit tough when bigger, and the taste won't knock your socks off when it's tiny either.

@OtterwoodCottage it's a fun one, but really not worth growing for food!
