  • In our first meeting in 2025, we're excited to hear the latest about Biologically Enhanced Agricultural Management (BEAM) from Dr. David Johnson and Hui-Chun Su-Johnson! Learn about multi-year results from farmers in Turkey using BEAM for better ecological and economical outcomes. Also: common mistakes in building and maintaining JS bioreactors, how best to apply BEAM compost, monitoring for microbial diversity -and much more!

    Of course, their science is good and amazing results are coming from practice. However, what I am struck with is every time I have seen these two, they are marked by humility and generously honor each other. Looks like a beautiful marriage and a fruitful partnership! Well done!

    For people trying to keep their compost bioreactors from freezing, try using snow tape. Get a 20’ of the tape and weave it through the bioreactors as your filling it up and then wrap it around the outside and when your temperatures in the reactors start getting below 50 degrees F plug the tape and it should maintain the temperature at lease at 50 degrees F or above freezing. It works for keeping tender vegetation alive in SE Louisiana during below freezing here.

    I'm in southern NM. Have 2 food forest. We put leaves, horse and chicken manure in the food forest and our chickens mix and break it down. Makes great soil and worms.

    I have 7 bioreactors going since October in Kenya, no winter to worry about and the farm is, -0.03990192423583598, 34.17110117449714 and cant wait for the results. Using insect netting and mesh for the supporting structure.

    Which use of JS compost is better, using compost extract as a seed coating before planting or in furrow on the seed at planting?

    • @nmhealthysoil
      @nmhealthysoil  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Dr. Johnson prefers to apply the extract in the furrow when planting. Second best would be coating seeds with it.

    for us this johnson su thing is not a compost but an inoculent, we had lot of sea weed and water it with worm casting extract, water is fractionned rain water only, it is really a bio inoculent we don t sell it, we use it to inoculate paramagnetic biochar, wich will be put on the field,but remember to be sure soil is between 100 to 150 psi , so it is an holistic approach... watch cec, then put cover crop...after..then basalt ower will power the field as in egypt...

    I happen to see you here. I just moved here in 2023 kentucky. I want my compost soil to be healthy. I did 13 large grow pots this past 2024. I look forward to in future having a small lot plowed. What should I be concerned with soil. I bought nothing be organic compost. Do you educated. Thanks.

    I would like to know more about the meaning of,"....per acre"

    • @666bruv
      @666bruv หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      'Per acre/hectare' is a standard ag input/output per area. Fertiliser apps, seed apps, irrigation, yield, time, machinery/labour required/accounting, forecasting, etc

    • @nmhealthysoil
      @nmhealthysoil  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It refers to how much compost you need to apply per acre. Because it's preferred application is as an inoculant, you need very little JS compost per acre. Hope this helps!

      BTW for small scale composting if your c to n is right no need for tubes because the holes remain using a iron rod to make holes

    What is the 70% about that Dr. Su always presses on? Does she mean 70% moisture content of the pile or that moisture is 70% importance in the JS process?

    • @nmhealthysoil
      @nmhealthysoil  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      70% moisture content.

    • @philippinephoenix6869

      @@nmhealthysoil Thanks a lot for the clarification. This has been one of my biggest questions on what is the ideal moisture content, and I think that my own bioreactors have been suffering from a lower Moisture content at only around 40-50%.

    I have heard for years now. That brewing a compoat tea with airation and extend time.
    Does promote a bacterial dominant finished product.
    The fungal population is decreased.

      Johnson-Su isn’t applied as a compost tea. It’s diluted with water and applied immediately.

      @@karlsapp7134 Yes I know how to use it. It's used like an extract not a brewed tea

    I’ve got a 3 year old static pile and it’s like clay. Wondering if it’s still effective.

      If you can, look at it under the microscope and it will tell you if there's life! If you kept it moist, you likely have a nice party going on in there...
