    Could there be a more bass player like person than this guy right here. “Just ready to serve the song..”. I’ve never seen a cat so prepared to record. A true inspiration and a high bar for coming to the session ready to give everything you can.

    I just had a friend asking me if I could identify a bass used in Steely Dan's Hey Nineteen. I listened but couldn't quite place almost a P but not quite, almost a J but not quite. I googled and found a picture. Best I can tell, it's a J bass with the neck pickup relocated to below the bridge pickup and and unidentified pickup in the bridge position. Unidentified until today. It's the Starfire pickup Paul is using on his tele bass. Crazy what that J/Starfire combination along with technique sounds like on the recording.

    I think Paul was talking about Rival Sons. Scott Holiday (their guitar player) plays Kauer guitars - which have a model that is nearly identical to a Gibson Firebird. But Scott is endorsed by them anyway. But Rival Sons is definitely a band more people should check out! They are on tour opening up for Black Sabbath on their farewell tour this year.

    Great to see and hear when somebody is that passionate about what he's talking about!
    But what is this obsession with vintage instruments? Do they really sound so much better than newer ones, or is it more about nostalgia than anything else?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment David Mood One of the biggest issues with newer instruments is just the availability of the woods, I'm nostalgia plays into it. But remember as well most of these instruments were largely hand made, not as mass produced as they are now, so there is a lot of individuality to each instrument. However I love new guitars and have many! I also believe that these days for a fraction of the cost you can an incredibly well made guitar! Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren

    It's interesting that his '68 Tele Bass has the early P Bass pick up, not the neck humbucker typically seen in the '68-'72 Tele Basses. Are there any recordings of him playing this instrument you can recommend?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi FXPedaldotCom that's a great question! I will ask what he has used it on, although I do believe we used it on Daniel Powter's cover 'Happy Xmas War is Over' that I produced. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it! Warren

    • @MisterJawaman
      @MisterJawaman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +FXPedaldotCom These single coil pick ups were stock on Tele Basses from '68 till '71/'72. In 1972 Fender changed the pick up to the humbucker in the neck position you were referring to. Throughout the rest of the production of the Tele Basses (till about 1979) the pick up remained the same.

    This is an interesting talk . There is a small error about the wood. Paul has the belief that the ash bodies are lighter than alder , the reverse is true . Within any wood type there are weight variations but ash is nearly always heavier ; particularly some ash used to make the classic jazz ( Marcus Miller type ) and Music Man basses. Example : the ash bodied telecaster bass Paul shows , the heaviest he has . Heavy rigid wood will give a more level bass response and more bright slap. Alder bodies are lighter with a warm response , more hump in the bass.

    Next video,how to build your instrument from scratch lol. I see why a lot of guitar and bass players are very passionate about the sound and playing. A lot of work and focus gets put into creating a sound with gear and parts on the instrument itself tweaking away at so many things. I can see myself getting a guitar or bass and customizing it for a unique sound later on.
