Since that's been sitting so long, make doubly sure it's had the Takata airbag recall performed! So many of these cars are still out on the road with those claymore mines in the steering wheel and dash.
🙄yeah..that’s total aggravation..I have 2 civics..01 and 03 models..the 03 had the airbag supposedly fixed and good to go only for me to get a letter later on to inform me the airbag they replaced the defective airbag with was defective as well..🤦♂️kind of defeats the purpose 🤔 of the first airbag replacement right? Maybe the third time will be the charm? Who knows..waste of time..not even gonna screw with the other one, I’ll take my chances with the IED exploding in my face I guess..If I took it back in I’d rather them just gut the whole airbag system and not have it at all..seatbelt would be better with no airbag as opposed to a chemical explosion that sends a Kirby ghost bag to my vessel making me feel like Mike Tyson just punched 😵 🥊 me in the fucking face with some gloves laced up with shrapnel..I’m not in a hurry to take it in..do you know the number of vehicles that have recalls on them?? @@frankm8533 Whoa! 😳. I've been to Baltimore once, 20 years ago a month before 9/11 for Otakon. I can remember us driving our GMC Blazer on the interstate then we got off 2 exits early. Seeing the rowhouses and the looks given to us 4 white guys from Michigan as we made for the Convention center next to Camden Yards was... interesting to say the least. I also remember the 90+ degree heat and 90+% humidity. Thank the Gods for the AC in our hotel and the Convention center
@@frankm8533 This one is hard to steal since it's part of the exhaust manifold, located between the radiator and the engine block. Unless they literally tore the front of the Civic off, it's hard to get to. The '01-'05 Civic DX and LX were set up like this, but the EX had the more traditional downpipe and cat under the car. Even then, they'd have to jack up the car or be about 3" thick to fit under there. 😁
The exhaust leak is a common issue--the exhaust manifold is known to develop a crack. The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust manifold--I had to replace mine (2004 LX) to get rid of the leak. It's possible someone could weld it with the right equipment. It wasn't the exhaust manifold gasket (replaced it when I swapped in a new cylinder head and the leak had gotten worse). Headliner's a common issue also--haven't fixed ours yet.
@@WatchJRGo im sure your favoured junkyard would be able to send you manifold/cat if you cant repair….along with a trans if thats needed too. BTW love the switch back to every day cars i find them more interesting than the sports. ( probably as i never owned a sports or executive cars)

Exactly what I was thinking. Idk if the same signal to the speedometer goes to the ecu but it’s possible the ecu thinks it’s going as fast as it says on the speedo and shifting into OD too soon. There’s no way it’s just a simple speed sensor swap and it’s fine or I’ll be mad 😆
@@Addison0526 likely uses the data from it to decide what gear it needs to be in, basically the trans was constantly shifting and then trying to go into od at idle. My guess is a bad ground that’s chafed and seeing power from something else which is giving a false reading on the speed and throwing the trans into a fit

Pro tip: If a car has been sitting longer than over night you dont need to wipe the dip stick and dip it back in. All the oil is right where its going to be the 2nd time.
Look over the exhaust manifold closely because there might be a crack between cylinders 2 and 3. I've seen them so bad they came out in two pieces. Replacement manifolds have addressed the issue and they're only around $350.
There might be a relationship between the speedo issue and the 15v+ you're seeing from the alternator. It's been known to cause electronic issues when you get over ~14.8 on many cars.
Definitely could be a sensor. EG civics have an issue where the Speedo jumps around / car bogs that can be traced back to the VSS or a bad solder on the speedometer

Since he drove it and it didn't appear to be slipping badly - There is a real GOOD chance that it's going to be a sensor gone bad or possibly chaffed/broken wiring providing wacky signals to the computer that's controlling the trans - first thing I'd do is replace the VSS since the speedo is wacky reading signal when still. Then get out the fancy scanner and graph the trans sensors or scope them.
I once had to replace a headliner, it seems to be a theme for you now. Got some material, removed the headliner. Removed the headliner fabric. Spray adhesive on the shaped part as well as the fabric. I then laid the fabric on the formed part. Here was the trick. Happened to have an old mattress bag, the kind the mattress came in. Placed the entire thing inside the mattress bag and hooked it up to the shop vac. Kept the negative pressure for a while so it followed and kept the shape of the rigid part. Easy job and it came out perfect. Give it a try
Persistence pays off. And a Honda is always a safe bet. Best of luck with the flip, wish I could talk you out of the car for just a tad over what you gave for it. My wife and I are currently relying on a 2008 Suzuki SX4 with 280k for transportation to work as well as a semi-regular drive from Dallas to Kansas City to visit our daughter and grandkids. Our granddaughter was diagnosed with leukemia back around the beginning of 2020, and is on her second round of treatment after relapsing. Having lost my step-son to leukemia 20 yrs ago, this hits our family very hard and I’ve been looking for an inexpensive mechanics special that has a bit more life left and would be at least somewhat easier to maintain. I’m a decent mechanic, and the Suzuki is ok…it has AWD, and an automatic, which is very capable as we found out during the Texas freeze back in February. However despite it’s small size, the weight of the drivetrain and the slush box it only gets about 26mpg at best. It’s getting cantankerous, but it’s fairly reliable. If you happen to see this and are interested in working a deal, I’d be very interested.

@@paulsz6194 TSX. Got one for my daughter (a 2005), fixed up a few issues (steering rack, front suspension, etc.) and I hated to give it up when I was done working on it. Drove really tight, handled wonderfully. I really like the 2nd gen TSX wagons. If we didn't have CR-Vs here, I'd probably hunt one down.
Starting a Honda after its been sitting for so long, they always sound like that because all the oil has settled in the sump. A short drive should fix it.
If I could work on the Honda Civic with Watch JR Goes and Gabes I would drink the cold Bartle Skeets and roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.
These honda's are known for their engine blocks cracking. Mine cracked at 9.5 years. Of course honda said - sorry we only extended the warranty on the cracking to 8 years. thanks Honda! Good luck with your Civic. Hopefully, you won't have a cracked block.
Nice find. Surprised a car in this good a condition was abandoned as it appears to be worth the cost of a new transmission and a few repairs (famous last words!). My nephew bought a 2005 Accord a few years back and he parked it due to a bad transmission. He planned to replace it but has never gotten around to it.
Brilliant car at a bargain price…I had a D series engined Rover 400 and the thing just kept going the only problem I ever encountered was seized rear callipers and it was never serviced.
I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX that has that exhaust leak issue, common problem, those D17s are known for head gasket issues too. I blew mine and replaced it. Just a heads up might want to take a look at the cooling system for safe measure especially at that mileage, mine blew at 172000
Final step: Take the Civic back to the church, and see if you can find the owner who had to abandon the car two years ago. Give it back to them, or if not possible, someone else who needs cheap transportation that still runs. You are a cool dude.

That exhaust leak sounds like a crack in the manifold its a manifold with a cat in it so it has a little extra weight to it which causes it to crack between the runners it can be welded just gotta be careful if its close to the cat
I had a Prizm (Corolla) speedo do funny things like that and pulled the cluster to solder in new capacitors. As a manual it didn't affect drivability, but was a rewarding project for resale. Could be a wonky speed sensor gear on the transmission; hopefully the Autel can shed some light.
I had a 2004 Civic and I’m guessing it could be bad coil packs,oil getting into the spark plug chambers or bad spark plugs sounds like it’s running on 3 cylinders it does not sound like that normally I can confirm.

Bet the trans is fine, just a bad speed sensor or a chaffed wire, as when it was in park and when you started it to leave orileys, it shot up 60.

Just the speed sensor for the trip meter, located on the transmission. If it fluctuating, the shifting will be crazy

Eh, the regulator was working, just hard on them trying to charge a completely dead battery. It clamped back down to 14v real quick 🍻

I’m a decent mechanic, and the Suzuki is ok…it has AWD, and an automatic, which is very capable as we found out during the Texas freeze back in February. However despite it’s small size, the weight of the drivetrain and the slush box it only gets about 26mpg at best. It’s getting cantankerous, but it’s fairly reliable. If you happen to see this and are interested in working a deal, I’d be very interested.

Possibly just the faulty speed sensor causing the transmission to behave like that and go into overdrive.
Honda Civics are almost as dependable as Gabe.

@@paulsz6194 TSX. Got one for my daughter (a 2005), fixed up a few issues (steering rack, front suspension, etc.) and I hated to give it up when I was done working on it. Drove really tight, handled wonderfully. I really like the 2nd gen TSX wagons. If we didn't have CR-Vs here, I'd probably hunt one down.

Starting a Honda after its been sitting for so long, they always sound like that because all the oil has settled in the sump. A short drive should fix it.

These honda's are known for their engine blocks cracking. Mine cracked at 9.5 years. Of course honda said - sorry we only extended the warranty on the cracking to 8 years. thanks Honda! Good luck with your Civic. Hopefully, you won't have a cracked block.

Nice find. Surprised a car in this good a condition was abandoned as it appears to be worth the cost of a new transmission and a few repairs (famous last words!). My nephew bought a 2005 Accord a few years back and he parked it due to a bad transmission. He planned to replace it but has never gotten around to it.

Sat for two years and still has the catalytic converter, my town has a free catalytic converter removal service.
Brilliant car at a bargain price…I had a D series engined Rover 400 and the thing just kept going the only problem I ever encountered was seized rear callipers and it was never serviced.

I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX that has that exhaust leak issue, common problem, those D17s are known for head gasket issues too. I blew mine and replaced it. Just a heads up might want to take a look at the cooling system for safe measure especially at that mileage, mine blew at 172000
Final step: Take the Civic back to the church, and see if you can find the owner who had to abandon the car two years ago. Give it back to them, or if not possible, someone else who needs cheap transportation that still runs. You are a cool dude.

That exhaust leak sounds like a crack in the manifold its a manifold with a cat in it so it has a little extra weight to it which causes it to crack between the runners it can be welded just gotta be careful if its close to the cat

I had a Prizm (Corolla) speedo do funny things like that and pulled the cluster to solder in new capacitors. As a manual it didn't affect drivability, but was a rewarding project for resale.
Could be a wonky speed sensor gear on the transmission; hopefully the Autel can shed some light.

I had a 2004 Civic and I’m guessing it could be bad coil packs,oil getting into the spark plug chambers or bad spark plugs sounds like it’s running on 3 cylinders it does not sound like that normally I can confirm.

Honda ATF DW-1 it will not work correctly without genuine fluid..I worked at Honda and work at Acura. Take my word for it. Do the 12 qt flush.
When the transmission on 05 grand caravan blew it did that with the speedometer right before it couldn’t move under its own power anymore lol
