i think 3d fighters had a strong advantage with arcade releases (which arcade is sadly pass its golden days) and when fighting games during the 6th generation(ps2,xbox) of gaming were stagnant, 3d fighters kinda held it down for a while with doa 3, vf4, TTT etc etc. however questionable practices, unwise decisions in game mechanics, not trying to reinvent the wheel, the times and gamer interest all play a part in the current decline of 3d fighters. it should also be noted that in the world of gaming today, unless you are capcom or snk right now, no company wants to release a game that is going to fail at bringing in the money so its best to put all your eggs in your favorite child

Virtua Fighter has a new game in the works. Problem is we haven't heard anything about it since its announcement. I will say production wise, 3D fighters might be a bit more costly an investment and it seems they're also a bit more technical to create. DOA's devs are just gunshy to try and come back to the FGC so they're focusing on live service fan service stuff. Soul Calibur didn't do as well as big brother Tekken and as a result is in the shadow realm. I also think the last game's director left and there's no one left at Namco Bandai to champion the cause. Also Namco Bandai itself has money issues that make it particularly cautious about certain investments. They already cancelled more than half of their upcoming game projects. Bloody Roar I think is an IP that is currently under Konami but Konami doesn't care about anything that isn't Silent Hill, Castlevania or Metal Gear. Capcom actually has Plasma Sword and Rival Schools but Capcom doesn't want to over saturate the fighting game market again and investing in another non Street Fighter doesn't seem like something they're willing to do considering production costs. Darkstalkers is getting a lot of attention as a fighting game people want back but Capcom doesn't seem like they want to pull the trigger there. Not sure why the indie scene doesn't want to make a 3D fighter but trying to fight Tekken for top spot doesn't seem like it'll end well for anyone that doesn't have the budget or experience. Still there are plenty of people trying to fight Street Fighter...

Virtua Fighter will make a comeback for the Virtua Fighter 6 game.
I also want a Virtua Fighter live action for the 30th anniversary of Virtua Fighter.

Big part of DOA, Soul calibur, Vf flopping was releasing their games with no rollback netcode. I remember buying the games to try to learn but the online experience was awful.

Soul Cap 6 didn't flop, it performed better than namco thought it would

I just hope a 3D fighter for Nintendo Switch happens. It's too bad none of the big-name franchises made it to the system, but I'd be fine with SoulCailbur II and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 ports. Speaking of Virtua Fighter, I believe Sega Ages releases for VF Remix, VF2.1 and VF3tb would be great, but I think VF3tb can benefit from having online play with rollback netcode. The Dreamcast didn't sell well, though VF3tb has a cult following. I just hope VF3tb becomes more accessible to modern audiences than to those that have a Dreamcast or copies of Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth.

virtua fighter is dead, soul calibur is dead, dead or alive is dead (mostly by their own monetization practices and bad communication) and tekken stands alone and I think it's only due to the popularity garnered from EVO because I honestly believe he gameplay in DOA is superior in every way.

Also, I'm not surprised Virtua Fighter isn't making a comeback, from it's inception the game had an issue with character design, most of it's roster is forgettable and based on the most simple stereotypes with little to no personality, like a ninja, a kung fu master assassin (who is basically just mercenary tao from dragon ball), generic karate dude, generic kung fu girl, they need an entire new roster because Jackie and Sarah were carrying them hard.
Like, compare them with DoA's roster, they have a lot of ninjas but none of them feel generic, hell, Ryu Hayabusa is so cool he has his own franchise, their kung fu master assassin? a sadistic silver haired woman in a catsuit, their kung fu girl goes around fighting in a dress because she can, their karate dude is actually a ninja master with amnesia who dresses like a super model. Not to mention their designs are interesting mixed with their personalities (except for hayate, he looks like a bum every time.)

When it comes to 2D fighters, in comparison, there are a lot more sprite 2D fighters than 2.5D fighters. 2.5D fighters are 2D fighters with 3D graphics.
