    Well we got Tekken 8 on the Horizon and I know a lot of you are very interested, but I also know a lot of you don't know much about 3d fighters. That's ok! Even if you are a SF or Guilty Gear vet, we all gotta start somewhere and thankfully playing other 2D fighting games will help you out when you start on your 3D fighter journey, but there are some particulars that don't easily translate over, so lets talk about them! Give the vid a watch, like if you liked it, and hope this helps you out!

    This is probably the last video for a bit over the holiday barring breaking news or surprise trailer drops. The majority of this channels life I have covered 2D fighting games(even though the first FG I covered "for real" was actually Tekken 7 at launch, fun fact!) so I feel like I got a bit of a duty to help ease everyone into Tekken with the upcoming launch cause its obviously gonna be a pretty big deal! Expect all the usual guides at launch and just probably a lot of Tekken 8 coverage in general in 2024. Need someone on the side of the hero characters like Kuma to help balance out all the mishima fans after all!

    Another thing is that characters don't have invulnerability when launched or knockdowns. So you can beat people who are on the ground and don't have to wait for them to stand up.

    Oh my god. For most of my life, Tekken was pretty much the only fighting game I played, so I instinctively stand blocked most of the time without even knowing the mechanics there. I've been playing Guilty Gear and Street Fighter a lot these past several years, so I had no idea why I was getting blown up so badly when I was playing the closed beta lmao.

    Yeah, when switching between 2D and 3D fighting games, I immediately noticed that blocking worked a lot differently. In 2D fighters, low attacks come fast and overheads usually take longer. In 3D fighters high and mid attacks come out quickly whereas low attacks are usually slower. The defensive options in 3D fighters also makes the barrier to entry very steep. For every character, there's a multitude of defensive options and just as many offensive options.

  • @ADreamingTraveler

    The only 3D fighter I ever played was Tekken 5 back in 2006 and back then I had no clue how to play fighting games and would just mash buttons lol. I'm very excited for T8 but going from 2D to 3D definitely has me feeling a bit intimidated. It feels very foreign to me. I played the demo for 8 and absolutely loving it even though I don't understand that much of it. I didn't realize that the huge move lists don't really matter which has me with a sigh of relief because I thought maybe I had to learn a majority of those moves but turns out I can just look at the best moves to learn at first. Though one thing I learned is it's probably good to pick a main in Tekken and REALLY stick with that main you like just due to how much each character is capable of

    Interesting, since there was a 2D fighting game drought when I got into these games, I've played a lot of Tekken and Soul Calibur, but never quite got 2D fighters, felt stiff to me and I did not know how to play, 3D felt like a more natural transition to the action games I've played.
    Now with the first and current Granblue game, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear and especially Street Fighter 6 the switch figuratively clicked and I could retroactively play older 2D fighters I had problems with before.
    And I noticed at GamesCom playing Tekken 8 that this might be a one way switch, or Tekken 8 plays totally different than the previous parts, however, I had my problems with it. So this video now makes sense to me. ^^

    Not to take out of this subject of this video but I just want to say that this has been a great year for fighting games and other in general. With releases like Street Fighter 6 & Mortal Kombat 1 to updated versions of the current games like Dragon Ball Fighterz & Granblue Fantasy getting rollback netcode. As to getting announcements of other fighting games coming soon like Tekken 8 & Project L which looks all amazing.
    Granted there are some major problems that are still being annoyed with such as microtransactions, cheating, bug fixes and other but still the future looks bright for fighting games as these things can and hopefully be sorted out going into 2024. That being said just wanted to wish you Rooflemonger and your family a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. And to everyone else go out and play some fighting games.

    I have been playing Tekken almost as long as I have been playing SF, which is to say, since the early ‘90s, and only now did I learn that mids are all overheads as a rule. LOL. I mean, I guess I sorta knew because I knew what a Special Mid was, like T3 WGF. But to realize it’s a rule and why I don’t crouch block on instinct in Tekken just opened my eyes to stuff I unconsciously learned without properly identifying it.
    I still won’t ever be a competitive Tekken player, but stuff like this helps make things click for people like me. Thank you!

    The thing to consider is whether you want to enjoy 2D fighting games, I used to be a big Mortal Kombat fan, then I started to play Tekken and honestly, 2D games now just seem like it was made for babies - and it's not even players' fault, it's just even if you use your whole movelist it seems as if you spammed small amount of attacks over and over cuz Tekken has more completely different moves, in 2D you just walk, in some instance dash, jump and block, this seems pale compared to sidestepping or special movement techniques such as korean back dash or wave dash - may not be the general case, but from my experience once you truly det into Tekken, there is no return to 2D

    Been getting my ass beat for 5 days. There's so much that makes no sense. Learning this after years of 2D fighting games is like trying to learn starfish language. Crouch blocking not working on mids is baking my brain. Fastest move being 10 frames is killing me in training mode when I see I'm +4 and my 2D fighter brain thinks I can link a jab afterward. The fact that there's never a point where my opponent can't combo me is maddening. What the fuck is oki in this game when you're never safe on the floor? What moves are punishable? It feels intuitive in a game like Street Fighter or even Granblue but in this game I can't always tell. And throw breaks being arm-dependent feels so subtle. With so much going on, how do you even notice? I'll learn it eventually I'm sure but right now it's just so frustrating. Gonna watch some more guides (got all your recent ones queued up) and hopefully something will start to click. Sorry to be a salty scrub but I had to get this out somewhere. Thanks for your hard work, Roof. Gonna be leaning on your knowledge a lot coming up.

    Something that might seem strange is that MK players (especially those that played a lot of MK11) might find themselves able to acclimate to Tekken quite easily. It's not something I can really explain off the dome, but there's a feeling of shared DNA between the two series, now more than ever.
    Those familiar with "traditional 2D fighters" might have a harder time though. Tekken has a completely different rhythm and those players will feel that a bit more than someone who isn't initiated in the fighting genre at all. More or less the same rules, just contextualized differently.

    • @ArkRiley
      @ArkRiley 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To me, the similarity is that they both use attack strings instead of cancels. The logic in most 2D games is "press the next button when the attack hits" because you're using cancels - whether that's a magic series/gatling or special cancel or w/e. In MK and Tekken, you have to dial in the whole string up front

    idk why they arent more 3D fighters. They seem more realistic and provide more options. You dont have to worry about projectile spamming and being locked in a corner. What i hated about 2D fighters was that playing online would amount to someone spamming projectiles to keep you away and i had to keep jumping and blocking to get to them if my character didnt have proper projectiles.

    Really nice video Roof.
    As a vision impaired fighting game player I have always struggled with 3D fighting games. Bought soulcallabar 6 last year and have hardly played it.
    I think it's because I can visualise 2D moves easier than 3D moves. So I find the distinction with rush down and zoners easier to comprehend than what ever 3D fighting games have. I loved Tekken 2, still do even though I don't have access to it, but I was never good at playing it. It is also easier to track someone when they can only move forwards or backwards, those side stepping moves can be difficult to work out. I have more I could say but I think this is enough for now. I respect 3D fighting games but for now they are not for me. Who knows, if Tekken 8 has some strong accessibility options that could all change.

    Having played the Tekken 8 demo, it seems easier to perform side steps. One issue I had with 7 (the one I've put any amount of time into) was how I was always jumping or crouching when I was trying to utilize the 3D space.
    I'm drawn to this series because my finger dexterity is rather poor, which makes executing long/precise combos difficult. Surprisingly, my fingers spaz out at the correct input rate for Tekken.

      @@rooflemonger My dream would be 8 Way Run from SC, but that would require a block button, and we can't have that. Not in muh tekken.
      Or we could have good netcode in SC...

    The hardest thing to learn in tekken is the input timing, you need to press the direction + input at the same time,
    Down Foward 2 is different from holding Down + Foward and pressing 2.
    It took me time to get used it

    I grew up playing Tekken Tag Tournament but I've never been into fighting games so never really cared about playing it seriously. Spent a lot of time later on playing 2D ones like Mortal Kombat 9 and Injustice. But then I started plaSoul Calibur 6 and I like that one a lot more. Not just because it's 3D but also because you use weapons too

    Also remember side step evasion works differently in different 3D fighters. Like in VF evades are success/fail, not hitbox based like in Tekken.

    As a King main, I don't even do the chain grabs but usually just the RDC after a wavedash but mostly I just do a lot of pokes and Counter hit moves like b1, and focus more on punishing.

    I could've used this video the other way around as a Tekken player lol. I've been playing SF6 for a little while but I've only just gotten out of the habit of randomly stand blocking (which I have from Tekken) after doing a move that's like -3 on block.
    Cause I'm so used to just holding back to not get hit in Tekken after doing something that's quite minus but safe on block.

  • @princekanbatsu2301
    @princekanbatsu2301 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Worth noting is that, the reason you don't crouch block by default is because, unlike other 2d fighting games, in Tekken most launchers are mids, while lows don't often launch on normal hit, and/or are slow enough for the trained player to react to them.
    For example in SF6 anything could start a combo with drive rush so you naturally want to hold crouch and react to overheads because they are slower and because every character has like 1 or 2 over heads

    My main problem with fighting games other than Tekken is the input and execution of moves.
    It's too fast/twitchy for me, in Tekken I can "piano" moves and it'll still come out whereas other games, you have to be precise.
    I find it more enjoyable when you can execute special moves 90% of the time without doing QCF/HCF or charge motions tbh.
    It doesn't dumb down the difficulty of execution IMHO, you still have to time your moves correctly and when to whip it out.

    One of the things that sounds obvious but took me forever to understand with Tekken is that if you want to figure out the input to do a move your opponent did, you can usually look at the limbs to know which button and guess the direction.

    I wasn't super interested in 8 until the end of the roster started looking pretty good, that it sounds like they've shifted movement focus from KBD to sidestep sounds more appealing too. Really hope they get the netcode tuned up some more by launch, sounds better than 7 but still not anywhere near where other games are right now.

    Thanks for the advices ! Tekken 8 will be my first 3d fighting game that I'll try to play seriously, I can't wait for it to launch !
    There is also one thing that I find annoying in Tekken compared to like Street Fighter, it is the fact there is no such thing as lights, mediums and heavies, in Tekken the attacks are classified with Right arm, left arm, right leg and left leg. It makes things so hard to remember, the same button can be a fast hit in a string and a big heavy attack in another, is there something that I'm missing ? It really makes move lists difficult to learn for me

    • @RoaringTide
      @RoaringTide 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Although each face button corresponds to a different limb, I've never found it helpful to think about it that precisely. All I ever needed for things to feel intuitive was to remember that 1 and 2 (square and triangle) are arm-related moves, and 3 and 4 (X and O) are leg-related moves. Beyond that, it's just learning the movelist for your character.

I play all fighting games I can get my hands on and for 3d fighters SS is huge and just the sheer amount of moves each character has lol! King has so many moves and I try to remember them all from link throws to tracking moves to launchers! Hope you enjoy Tekken its well worth anyones time!

    We need 3D fighters to make a full comeback the same way 2D fighters did back in the 2010s.
    There’s very little variety in the 3D space, only down to Tekken and SoulCalibur. I could hope for Bloody Roar, Virtua Fighter. DoA, and Naruto: Clash of Ninja to return someday.
    Maybe even Tobal, if Square Enix is interested enough.

      Yeah, it's really sad that the sub-genre has shrunken down to just 2 franchises from the same publisher. And hell, it's really only one. SCVI hasn't gotten a new game since 2018 and Bandai-Namco seems to prefer Tekken.
