    My buddy owns a Wood Shop and he now has all Festool products. I have had the opportunity to repair three of his tools, two sanders and one chop saw. All three had bearing failures, they are built in a manner you can not simply change a $20 bearing, but you have to buy a complete armature with the bearing for $130. The chop saw was only a few months old, and The bearing was not available. When I called Festool, they were Johnny on the spot sent me a box so I could return it for warranty repair...
    At the start of his production, he had all "box store" tools, and I never had to repair any of those. As production picked up he switched to all Festool.
    They are good tools with the ability to work with the great dust collection vacuums they offer.
    Unless you are making money with your tools, they are too expensive for my taste.

      If you look at Ave's channel he has done tear aparts on them. Basically they are junk on the inside. Some of the bearings (where there were relly low loads, were just the shaft in plastic. Of course they are great tools functionally, but they are not built to last like old tools. Unfortunately you find the same situations with classic tools, outsourced to China.
      They have functionality that other tools do not have, and you may look like a slug if you roll up in some neighbourhoods and don't have them. That doesn't mater to me as I learned woodwork 50 years ago, and am cruising on my talent stack at 60, but for newbies, in peak earning, I would do it.

      @@dumpsterfire138 My dad has been working with DeWalt for a really long time, we also have a couple (old) milwaukee drils that are really good, and also 2 makita rotary hammer drills, overall imo they are all good, have pros and cons, I had a Milwaukee hammer that died, grinded itself inside, no Idea why, but a 10+ years Dewalt that still works. the makita is like 5 years and works fine too, at least in my country, the best are Dewalt and Makita (in part because not many people sell them nor fix them), I have no complaints, and 2 miter saws, one that cuts granite, works perfectly, 10 years old too, imo older milwaukee tools were better but now for me I would buy Dewalt/Makita, mostly Dewalt

    Unless the prices have come down significantly from when they first came out, I can't imagine anyone that doesn't make a living using power tools benefiting enough from Festool products to justify the outrageous prices. And even then, I think with their prices, they are targeting a very niche buyer.

    I have the ETS-EC 150 5mm Cam and it is fantastic. The only major difference between the 150 and the 125 is the 125 only does a 3mm orbit and the 150mm does either a 3mm or 5mm depending on what you purchase. So you can’t buy a 125mm that does a 5mm orbit if that makes sense👍😀

    • @Warkive
      @Warkive 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is a key point. That said, if you're buying your first sander like Cam mentioned you probably want one that will give the best final finish and there the 3mm orbit will generally give you better results (while the 5mm will tend to do the rough sanding faster). So yea, both are fantastic, but if I had I pick one I'd say the 3mm as well.

    Hey Cam....MOST of your viewers are NOT professional woodworkers they are hobbyists that may sell a table or tray here or there. As such using those Festool products really becomes somewhat ridiculous...and you do hint at that but here's a great alternative.
    In the USA you'll spend $630 for that Rotex RO 150 and another $425 for the ETS EC 125/3...yes both can use 6" pads - the Rotex with a 5mm sanding stroke and (make sure to get) the ETS 125 with a 3mm stroke. That's about $1,100 all in. And it's actually the sand "paper" that you're using and sanding technique that's really doing the hard work...that's what's making the real difference.
    That being said (I have no skin in the game here) - your audience should seriously consider the Metabo SXE 450 Turbo. For $290 you're going to get two 6" sanders in one - both a Rotex type and a fine finish ROS. The SXE goes into "Turbo" mode with a 6mm stroke for the 80/100 grit work to remove those planing lines - just like a Festool Rotex and then with their patented adjustable dual orbit diameter - you can adjust the stroke down to 3mm - for the finer, higher grit ROS work. It's a known fact that the smaller stroke pattern will leave less swirl marks...it has a 3 year warranty too. 4,200-11,000 RPM compares to the 6,000-10,000 for the ETS...and the slowest 4,200 RPM can even help with the oil buffing - since you want the slowest speed for that (your GEM is 1,650)...
    For the "paper" - the newest 3M XTRACT Cubitron appears to be the best, longest lasting and best dust removal mesh disc available today.
    In today's world $1,100 vs. $290...it's a no brainer.

    wow viewers are hard to please... I like the vid, but as an owner of a harbor freight super cheapo, I wonder with an orbital particularly what sets it so far apart? This is my most used tool overall, and I truly do want that perspective. Can you share what it does so much better? Less pigtails, better dust removal, etc?

      Its way better at dust removal which equals a better finish and longer lasting sandpaper. Its also much more comfortable and lower vibration. They are vastly superior, that being said if you don't want to spend the money don't and hate sanding more than you have to.

      agree. Please tell us WHY Festool is better than Bosch, DeWalt, or any other "moderately" priced brand of tool. What is the value proposition that warrants the premium price tag?

    The only top of the line items I didn’t get as festool when the price was equal was my sanders. Mirka seemed like a better price in my opinion. The first festool I would get would be the Kapex 120 or the track saw. Game changers.

    Hey I hope you see this comment cause I had a question that I can't find the answer to anywhere. I made a river counter for a van I'm converting into a camper and finished it with Rubio. The wood looks great, but the epoxy shows little scratch marks all over it, I thought maybe it was just a little residue from the Rubio, but after buffing it clean and letting it dry overnight, they are still there. I have no idea how to fix it, and really don't want the counter to be ruined. Any help is appreciated please and thank you! Your videos have helped me immensely but Ive never seen this topic covered

    I love festool. I find that the rotex ro150 can replace a belt sander. Run an 80 grit, put it on aggressive mode, and go to town on stock removal. I also like their chop saws not just their sanders and dust extractor.

    Excellent choice once one moves up to making money from there hobby. I’ve stuck to buying high end used tools for now, order a manual, learn to fix them myself and keep them in good order. That way I’ll respect them and treat them well. What’s the name of the carving/tool vice on the side of the bench? That looks very handy!

    Hi Cam. Considering a Festool Dust Extractor. Would use it for everything from sanding to 12” planer, 6” jointer, miter saw, table saw, 14” band saw eventually. Which would you recommend? Or do I need something more powerful than a festool for the tools that produce heavier material than just dust? Thanks. I love your videos.

      I own a 12.5” planer with helical head (smaller shavings) and you need at least a 2” dust port if not ideally 4”. The Festool dust extractors with the 50mm can work but it’s not ideal. Planers and jointers throw a ton of shavings. I don’t have a large dust collector so the shavings from my planer pile up and I just suck up the pile with my Festool dust extractor or I have a bucket for shavings that I toss.

    Personally I think the fes sanders are some of the worst value propositions if you arent in the field and have a decent sized air compressor, dynabrade's are such a joy to use. Even if you need electric, an outboard power supply, like mirka, just makes it so much nicer to use and get far more consistent results.
    The domino on the other hand, I mean, for a lot of work it can replace a bunch of tools and reduce setup time to almost nothing compared to many other alternatives you might use.
    The jigsaws are just the best you can get without going to a mafell or something.
    Granted most of those opinions are based on the type of work I do and have done over the years, so milage may vary but I mostly did mid and high end cabinetry, furniture, and a decent amount of finish carpentry working in a shop and more artsy fartsy stuff for non day job work.

      Cam spent his former life sitting under a MASSIVE ceiling fan. When it stopped spinning, he would sweat a LOT!
      (You didn't know that the main rotor on a helicopter was to keep the pilot cool? When it stopped working, there was HELL to put up with.)
      Sorry Cam, couldn't resist. The "choppers" I worked on, had 2 main rotors. And, no cantankerous tail rotors.

    • @AaronGeller
      @AaronGeller ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TWC6724 I think if one plans to use the sander for 10 years, then the price difference is negligible over the life of usage. An extra $200 after 10 years is meaningless relative to the joy of having what you truly want and using it. The smaller details are magnified over the thousand hours of use.
