  • I've been asked by a few subscribers why I upgraded from the Festool ETS 125 to the new ETS EC 125 and what the differences are between the two sanders.
    After receiving the same questions, I thought I would make a video showing the differences between the two sanders and why I upgraded. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe. Take care, Eric

    I've been looking for a quality comparison of these two styles, and this is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for helping out!

    Hello and thank you for your videos- I have 25 year old plywood with maple veneer kitchen cabinet boxes and curly maple cabinet doors that I am refinishing. They were never stained but just had a polyurethane coating which had turned dark with age and had started to scuff away and chip quite a lot over the years. I used a chemical stripper to take off all the finish on the doors and on the base shelf areas of the cabinet boxes. I then bought the Festool RTS 400 and used that to sand all the cabinet doors first with 120 and then 150. I have been using their mesh sandpaper. I then hand sanded at 150 with the Festool hand sanding block. I hook the power sander and hand sanding block to the CT-15 dust extractor. I now have to sand many areas of the cabinet boxes- the largest section that will need to be sanded is a continuous area of the backs of 4 cabinet boxes that are screwed into each other. None of these cabinet boxes have been stripped using a chemical stripper so I have to use a sander to take the finish off. Once again, these boxes are plywood with maple veneer. I can get the finish off with the 120 mesh sandpaper and RTS 400 sander but not sure if I should buy the ETS EC sander for this purpose or continue using the RTS 400 as I did for the cabinet doors that were previously stripped. I also did not use a chemical stripper on the cabinet plywood shelves and just sanded off the old finish with the RTS 400. It took quite long but It worked. I am not a regular woodworker but I wanted to do the best that I could with my own limited skillset. Love to hear your thoughts on whether I should buy the ETS EC sander for the cabinet boxes or continue using the RTS 400. I'm a bit lost and thought Id ask you for your advice. I'm afraid that the random orbit ETS EC sander will go through the veneer. Thanks a ton again...

    Love the details explaining the difference between the sanders. Now that I have three Festool products I understand your loyalty. My next purchase will be one of their jigsaws.

      Penny R., there is hardly anyone who's a bigger fan of Festool than I (or Eric), but if you haven't already taken the plunge for a Festool jigsaw, you should check out a Mafell for one really SWEET cutting tool. Alas, it comes with an eye popping price tag.

    Thank you for your comparison I am looking to replace my older PC and Dewalt Sanders and Dust Collection is paramount to all other safety features for me. As I lost part of my right lung in the military and Festool looks to be the premium when it comes to dust extraction. Plus I already have a CT and it does an awesome job with my track saw.

    I just moved up to the ETS EC 125 after using PC RO sanders for years because I couldn’t get parts for the PCs and my hand was getting numb after long sanding sessions. I got the MIDI dust extractor first because everyone was out of stock on the ETS EC 125. So far I’m very impressed - very little vibration and practically no dust escaping.

    For me the main part for getting the higher version is the edge guard ^^ I like the form of the newer version and overall handling more but the edge protector just is so valuable and I found needing something like that more than I'd like to admit

    One of the biggest problems with the older sanders is the dust collection port holes on the the pad, they’re only on the out side of the pad and not any in the center, if you look at the new ones you’ll see what I’m thinking about, I’ve drilled holes into the pads to make them more like the new ones, with fairly good results.

    Thanks for the great video, I wanted to add a clarification, you referred to the ETS EC 125 as the "new version" of the ETS 125 EQ. Thats not the case, it's a completely different sander with a 400watt brushless motor [EC]. One of the reasons for the very low profile is the lack of an internal fan, so it can not be used with a dust bag, only with a vac, it's a true production tool that can handle an 8 hour day every day. This video was from 2016 and since then they did upgrade the ETS 125 EQ to the ETS 125 REQ, the REQ is still a brushed motor increased to 250w, plus an edge protector and a fabric dust bag. It's a deal at $200, but limited as a finish sander, whereas the EC can handle heavier stock removal. I'm not sure why Festool gave them such similar names.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your explanations and the quality of presentation. I sanded for several days in a row in a heavy project and found myself with tendonitis because the Bosch I used is really heavy. What is your personal experience with your sanders? Have you ever had this kind of problem? thank you in advance and cheers to you. Camille.

  • @ryanbailey112

    I started woodworking about 6 months ago. I now have sever carpel tunnel and my hands are constantly numb. I wish people would stress the importance of safety with power sanding and share the knowledge more on these reviews. I spoke with Festool and the HIGHLY recommend the new 125/3 for reduced vibration on hands. A friend of mine already bought one and he estimates a reduced vibration amount by 90% compared to the typical big bock store 90 special. I will be purchasing mine tomorrow and comparing it to the Dewalt 5" and anti vibration gloves.
    I had no idea how sever this could be...why Festool does not advertise the feature more I have no idea. Thanks for the review.

    What about weight and maneuverability? I already have an old ETS 150 and plan to keep it for heavier work. I want something lighter and smaller for quick, small tasks. I'm trying to decide between the standard 125 or the ec 125 and wondering if the EC is really worth almost double. Main thing to me is hand fatigue based on weight, size, ergonomics and vibration.

    Question, I own both Festool ETS EC 125 and ETS 125 EQ. I'm sanding off milling marks off of curly lumber (8" wide max.). Do I need a Rotex 125? Or is that not meant for my workshop.
    Thanks.

    Hi Eric, I'm a fairly new woodworker and I love your videos. I notice that you are a Woodpeckers fan and have a question. I was looking at buying their T-square to help with layout. But I also need a straight edge and a quality square. I was looking at the 36 SERX. I was also looking at their woodworking square. I'm prepping to build kitchen cabinets for my rental house. If you had to buy one of these tools first what would you recommend?

    • @thepoplarshop
      @thepoplarshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a SERXL so I can't comment on it. I don't use the t-squares that often. So if I had to recommend anything from your list it would be a square. It's more versatile then the straight edge and t-square in my opinion. Everyone should have a good quality square.
      Eric

    I 've been looking to get a new sander . I know it will not remove stock like a rotex, but will it do aggressive sanding as well ?

    • @thepoplarshop
      @thepoplarshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ian Rose Yeah, nothing that I know of can compete with a rotex. But, yes. I've used 40 grit with the ETS EC 125 on bare wood and it removes a good amount of material.
      I did a video not too long ago with the ETS EC 125 sanding from 60 grit up to 220, here's the video......
      th-cam.com/video/wmFDpdfH8vQ/w-d-xo.html
      You'll be able to see how quickly the ETS EC 125 sands down a rough piece of poplar.
      Take care,
      Eric

    I use the ETS EC 125 Sander because of the 2mm orbit for fine finishing. Don't know if having the 3mm would make a difference for me. Although, I do like how the new ETS EC 125 sander looks and how you grip it.

    • @thepoplarshop

    Hi Eric For which reasons u r mentioning that you prefer 5'' sanders compare to the Festool's 6 inches?

    • @thepoplarshop
      @thepoplarshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Daniel Baron Hi Daniel, I prefere 5" because it's what I've always used. I've never used a 6" sander. It's in my comfort zone.
      No good reason for me to mention that I prefer the 5" over the 6". When I record my videos I do A LOT of rambling, which I edit out as much as I can. I know guys don't want to hear me talk for over an hour about sanders. LOL !
      Take care, Eric

    Hi Eric,
    Thank you for your work on the videos. Great stuff! My wife wonders why I don't have a wall of Festool like yours. LOL Maybe next year.
    Seriously, do you see any reason to keep an ETS 125 EQ once an ETS EC enters the shop? Thanks again.

    • @thepoplarshop
      @thepoplarshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Todd Reimer The reasons I'm holding on to the ETS 125 EQ is for those "just in case" moments. Just in case I need to sand something and I don't want to drag the CT vac and hose out. I can simply use the turbo bag with the ETS 125 EQ.
      Just in case I need to send the ETS EC 125 in for any service. Which is probably highly unlikely, but stuff happens.
      I like to use the turbo bag with the ETS 125 EQ for capturing dust for making matching wood fillers.
      I've lent tools out to friends, so if someone wanted to borrow a sander I would lend them the ETS 125 EQ and I'd still have a 5" sander in my shop. Just a couple reasons why I've held on to the ETS 125 EQ. Plus, if I got rid of it, it would throw off my sys ports and I would have to buy a systainer to replace the one for the ETS 125 EQ. LOL ! A collector never sells any part of his collection, right? HA-HA-HA-HA !
      Take care man,
      Eric

    • @thepoplarshop

      ben_r_ the pro5 only has 50 watts more power than the ets125. which is a little shy of a half amp more power. I not that impressed by a half amp improvement. But I'll find out once I get my pro5. only thing I like about the pro 5 and the new dts and rts is the edge protectors.

    • @ben_r_

      Also has the brake and supposedly a better sealed switch and the newer style dust port connection. And was only $99 plus the $50 voucher for those lucky enough to get one. On paper its an all around better unit. We'll see when they ship and people start using them.

    Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way.
    Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out.
    Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!
