  • This is my finished product for the Instagram Builders Challenge, I decided to play with the drawer slides and use dowels instead of traditional hardware or square wood. I was surprised with how easy it was to do!

      Yeah me too. At first glance I thought they were pinned tenons. I think it’s better that you used a contrasting wood it made it a feature rather than a defect.

    Very nice, I love the dowel concept for the drawer slides. If I may give you a small tip for future reference: Construct your drawer boxes so that the sides extend about 2 inches past the back of the drawer - The extended sides then can be sized to act as stops to prevent the drawer from going too far in to the carcase, and the added benefit is that the full interior of the drawer can be seen and used without pulling the whole drawer out of the frame. Also, rubbing a candle along the drawer rails and grooves ensures a super smooth drawer action.

    Now that is an ingenious way of thinking out of the box. I am glad to see more women are becoming more involved not only in the trades themselves, but into the Master Crafts side of Furniture Design as well construction of furniture.

    So an idea for the depthing would be to cut a blind key way down the center of the dowels. Then you could insert a dowel through the drawer into that slot and it would catch the travel to keep the drawer contained and form a rear stop.

    I (thinking about using it for myself, not a kid) love that you can take the drawers off. I could storage specific items to carry around, and then put back in the desk when I'm done.

      That was my original idea. My son can take off his drawer full of dinosaurs and play on the floor. But I fear it might be dangerous that it could fall in his toes or something. Ha

    A "common sense" approach to woodworking. I don't know if society is ready for that...but it is refreshing to see. A lot of good ideas on alternative ways to accomplish what you wanted to do...I'll probably even try some...hehehe. The dowels are the perfect accent to the joints. I wouldn't change a thing with them. Thank you for a nice, easy build.

And so that we can all sleep at night you have to show how you fixed it😀😀.The whole look of the project was fantastic and I love the dowel drawer runners and dowel covers they look very smart in contrast with the light wood.

      @3x3CustomTamar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hahahaha! It was killing me too! I could just put a block or dowel or fender washer at the back of the dowel slides. But that won’t prevent them from being pulled all the way out. I think I have an idea that will work. And thanks so much!

    Adding to the dowel. If you place a smaller dowel at the back of the drawers, inside and out, then the drawers would not pull completely out and would only go in just so far.

      Little dowels on the back, top edge that are not glued in will secure it and be easily removed for cleaning. Same with the back. Little dowls to stop it from going all the way back, but removable so you can push the drawers out of the back to pull the other dowels out. Making extras and making them all the same size will insure it won't get messed up if you lose a few.

    • @MintStiles
      @MintStiles 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Pocket holes are very strong and effective, that’s why people use them. In fact, they are MUCH stronger than going directly into the end-grain. You can see some very large commercial structures being secured with 1.5” thick bolts using the same principle as pocket holes. For applications here, the screw-into-end-grain joint is plenty strong, but pocket hole will technically be a stronger joint. I think a good doweling system is probably the best way to go, but pocket hole is a close second for me. M&T or dovetails are only moderately stronger but take much more time to do. Unless you are going for “that look”, you are better off with pocket holes.

      @@3x3CustomTamar Well, to be fair, there are "accents", and then there are "entire regions of people saying words wrong". It's not necessarily the same thing.

    I was thinking instead of using biscuits, you could have extended the dowel theme by using dowels to join the top. I actually love this idea by the way. I had thought of using dowels for a center guide rail on the bottom of drawers, but this is just too cool. Especially the exposed dowel rails on the side. I think I'm doing this for the desks I have to build for the family. Thank you for this idea.

    I like this build. I don't have my local wood sources figured out yet so that I don't spend a fortune, but truly a nice project. I think the screw covers could have been made with a plug cutter and the same scrap ash, but sometimes you just want to use what's on hand to get done. And your guy at the end is priceless. Had to have a chair "right now", because he's so excited to use "his" desk. Loved it!.

    For longevity and greater strength, consider using dowels in end grain situations (stretchers) instead of screws. It creates a long grain to long grain glue connection, which is much stronger. It's like a round mortise and tenon. Nice work!
