Having been brought up a Methodist, I am steeped in the words of Charles Wesley. In particular, I have always been moved by And Can It Be? For most of my 70+ years of life, I believed that to replace Sagina for any other tune for this hymn amounted almost to sacrilege. Lou Fellingham and Phatfish (including her husband on drums) have shown me how wrong I was. This is the most amazing and uplifting setting of Wesley's poem since Sagina. Thank you so much Lou and Phatfish.

You are so right John. I’m a Methodist preacher these last 17yrs and we have chosen this tremendous hymn time and again, but this brings the grace and beauty of those words written with conviction so long ago. Lou and the gang have done it proud. I also think that the hymns of old have far more meaning then the “modern” worship music of today, this example shows that you can revive the “old” hymns to a modern beat, hey but at 55yrs I’m just being old fashioned. May Christ our Lord bless those who come to Him in faith and truth.

@@lcsdw01 The hymns are as timeless as the One whom they glorify. I too love the modern takes on the classic hymns, as much as the modern worship music, as the words still ring true today, hundreds of years after the men and women who served to breath them into the world were called home to be with Him.

This hymn has always touched my heart. It became my favourite when I came to Christ in 1978. This arrangement is so wonderful. I have listened today with a heavy heart and it has lifted me and reconnected me to that first joy, that realisation of forgiveness and redemption. My chains fell off my heart is free!

Wow Brian, those immortal words “My chains fell off, my heart was free” need we say anymore for those that know Jesus. Now let’s start praying and working on those that don’t so they will know what we know.

Wow! Who'd have thought this great hymn could be modernised so successfully, it is a stunning modern worship hymn - I love it!

And Can It Be? Yes it can! This blows version off the old hymn blows me away. This version makes you concentrate on the words. My chains have fallen off. Thankyou Phatfish - see you in Maidstone.

But I'm so glad you did! Excellent!

I think that Charles Wesley would be humbled to see his hymn still as meaningful to Christians now as when first written and well pleased with Phatfish's arrangement . Beautiful

Had a brainstorm and found this channel... Apart from the Stoneleigh WB channel (again another find) I only have my memories of the Bible Weeks, when we were able to meet up (being as I was with the Kerith at the time). It seems amazing that it was half a lifetime ago when I met the wonderful and beautiful lady we all know as Lou Fellingham...! 😮
Have a more blessed and glorious life... and perhaps one day it would be great to meet you and the others again.
BTW, you will remember me as Neil from the town where the Kerith is...! 😉👍

As others have said, it was quite spangle to think of singing And Can It Be to any tune other than the one we've been brought up with. It's one of the few traditional hymns I'd claim to really like. But after singing this arrangement at a youth event yesterday I had to come and find it. Just as powerful as the original tune!

...when I saw them in Calgary in the 90's this was their song. I believe Stewart brought it forward first. I'm not on the same path but found myself here tonight. Its a crazy night.

I love this video and the new tune to a classic hymn. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, mine happens to completely disagree with OlderMoi. My Baptist church is moving away from the old traditional hymns in their 50 - 150 year old forms. The original melody of And Can It Be is pretty tired and needed a rewrite. I think Nathan and gang did a great job. We're singing it tomorrow in church. It will be interesting to see how it is received. It brings the powerful words back to life for me.

@Gozzy1971 funny you should say that. The music 'traditionally' associated with this hymn was published in 1825, nearly 90 years after the hymn was originally published by Charles Wesley in 1738. It was written by a bloke called Thomas Campbell. Was he was a rip-off merchant too? Thanks for standing up for the old man, but I'm sure if Charles Wesley could speak from the other side, I can't imagine him saying, "bet they copyright it - rip off merchants", can you?

@dishywinnie if such a song had such an impact in its day, why would it need renewal?
such powerful words should remain as such. Powerful. lou and her band are amazing but i think such talent has purpose elsewhere. re hashing the olde Word, is such Olde hat.

I like this tune but the original is way better, why didn't they just write a new song?

  • @harrybrown4815
    @harrybrown4815 ปีที่แล้ว

Second half of the song music drowned the vocals just becoming an incombant noise, really lost the power of the lyric.
I get that it was building through the 44 time like most modern pop where as the original 68 marches through militarily.
Like queen's bohemian rhapsody where the music is loudest there is no lyric it quiets down again before reintroducing the singer to emphasise the lyric.
This could easily be epic with a little better production and arrange Ment but as is just becomes a noise. Lost in translation. ❤

This is dreadful. A condescending rewrite. Not just because it's ousted one of the greatest hymn melodies of all time - this melody is just not good.

If anybody is being condescending it is you, what a pompous windbag you are jog on if you don't like it
