    My nephew (15) hunted deer for the first time in 2017. He had a 20 gauge slug with smooth bore barrel. He ran the deer down (200 meters), ambushed it, shot it in the heart at 25 meters, tracked it and dragged it out. So proud of him! Recovering Leukemia survivor and an all around awesome kid. Blew the heart right out. I asked him, "why did you shoot it so far forward?" Then I realized 3 years hunting ducks with his dad... .he lead it just like a duck.. ha ha.

    I feel the 20 gauge is perfectly adequate for hunting... as you said, when going for rabbits it's what you prefer, and frankly while I dont really rabbit hunt often it is one of my top choices as well as for hunting fowl and other birds. Recoil is light, allows for faster follow up shots, got plenty of load variety for whatever the game.
    I've taken SEVERAL deer and hogs with a .410 shotgun, and I hear all the time how inadequate it is for everything from hunting to home defense and etc. When you shot the "Deer" with the slug, that was almost a typical result for me on large deer with a .410, good sized entry hole, shreds the lungs apart, but often doesnt make it through and through. But again that's on the larger deer in the area, however it still stops them cold quite often. My second deer I ever took was with a 20 gauge with a 3 inch slug at about 40 yards. And while I've seen some guys take deer at 100 yards and even longer with 12 gauge slug guns, around here your typical hunting distances is about 50 yards or closer with all the brush and frankly that's the typical effective ranges of a LOT of shotguns out there anyways.
    When you were testing the buckshot, I feel a 00 buck load would prove to be plenty adequate provided you can get a good pattern at those ranges. I've seen some guns with modified chokes get some great patterns, but I also feel the ammunition can play a role in that. Like if it has a flight control wad or something designed to keep the pattern tighter and etc. So I am a firm believer a 20 gauge is perfectly suitable for small game as well as medium to large game, but like any weapon out there you just need to use the right ammo at an effective range for it.

    • @kekeke4467
      @kekeke4467 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel its all about the distance, depending how close you effects your gauge or calibre. For example if take a mile shot with a 22lr even if i am a good shot its not going to go well but if i am at 50 yards with a 308 it will be much more profitable.

    • @Predalien195
      @Predalien195 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kekeke4467 I've never had a deer or hog at close range get away from me when using a 20 gauge. Won't deny 12 gauge has more power and for fowl hunting it can certainly put more lead down range.
      I would agree, it is about the distance. But given the nature of shotguns in general, distances are usually kept within 50 yards or less at which the 20 gauge is still plenty.

    • @kekeke4467
      @kekeke4467 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Predalien195 most definitely. I would add that people try and use shotguns in situations where a rifle is more suitable.and then look for excuses for their lack of results which leads to claims about the unsuitability of 20 gauge when the real issue is that you are using the wrong tool. For example I saw a guy use 6 shells of 00 buck at 90 yards to try and hit some pigs no hits.

    • @joshbennett2762
      @joshbennett2762 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Predalien195 advanced modern slug guns like the savage 220 and more expensive slug guns that are capable of killing deer at 200 yards are 20 gauge the reasonings it can be more accurate and you aren’t trying to fling a 437g projectile

    • @Predalien195
      @Predalien195 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshbennett2762 I never questioned whether or not modern rifled slugs in slug gun barrels or specifically made slug guns could reach out there. It still doesn't change the fact that most shotguns are not used beyond 50 yards.

      I believe he was an instructor in the military and in the Oregon National Guard. He is a dental assistant. He seems to have had training in how to instruct. It explains why he depreciates his speaking abilities. That or he is a member of Toastmasters International. There's a lot of people who just like to speak in Umatilla County. I doubt you can make a living there teaching for a CHL. There are a number of places people shoot. If you are not stupid with a gun and clean up your mess, they say nothing.

    I use an H&R single shot with a 25.5 inch barrel and a modified choke for most of my small game needs. I load it with Remington 2.75" XLR #5 bird shot. That's a great combo for me. Most of the time I either get complete pass through or some shot will end up just under the hide on the opposite side of the animal and fall out during skinning. Sure beats biting into bird shot unexpectedly.

    I've used a 20 gauge more than any other single gauge I own. They're great for any small game., by which I mean rabbit, squirrel, quail, even dove if you're good with a shotgun. Turkeys need to be closer, deer need to be closer, and steel shot on waterfowl is silly. But they are capable on any of it with the right ammo and closer range. I didn't say they were first choice; I said capable. As for self-defense, especially in the confines of a home, I have no doubt of their efficacy even though I've never shot anyone. Otherwise, please wear a hat when you're in the rain! At the very least they keep water from obscuring your shooting vision! Great job, Paul.

    Great vid. I've got a buddy that almost exclusively hunts with an old 20g single shot. It's his turkey/squirrel/rabbit/varmint/deer gun. The right load for the right game at the right distance. People have made fun of him for not getting a "real" gun, but it's never failed and he shoots it well. Keep up the great work :)

    Great video and info on the 20 gauge. My first shotgun was a single shot Winchester 20 gauge like yours. Mowed lawns all summer to buy it used when I was 15 yrs old. Used it for everything. Birds, squirrels, rabbits, and several deer with slugs. Great gun and great round if you keep it 40 yds or less with bird shot. About 30 years later my daughter took her first buck with the same gun. Still put meat in the freezer.

    Paul, you're a true man of the North. Working and playing right through the rain.
    Of course a twenty gauge is "adequate", you just have to remember it's limits.
    Wonderful light guns for dove, rabbits, quail, etc.

    Very much appreciate your expertise and opinions on firearms. Like you I also love to shoot and believe in doing it safely. Thank you for being a good role model to the less experienced firearm owners and advocates. I'm based in Northwest Oregon and hope one day we may have the pleasure of shooting together!
