Since Paul’s recent news and absence from the channel, I’ve been digging back through his old videos. His channel is an absolute gold mine of knowledge that will continue to help people for many years to come. May God bless him and his family during this time. Paul, you are an American treasure!

      watching it that much more.

@@sir.phillip2697Ahhh the die hard milsurp purist. Sometimes you get what’s affordable and make it work for what you need. I understand not wanting to sporterize a mint condition hard to come by piece of history, but at the end of the day whoever bought it gets to do as they please.

    • @anthonykaiser974
      @anthonykaiser974 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

They "only" made millions of them, and most were arsenal rebarreled. IMHO, if it isn't an original barrel, otherwise unadulterated rifle, "unsporterizing" an old Springfield or Mauser 98 is usually a waste of time and effort. It's like museum ships. We can't keep all of them, typically, Iowa class BBs being a rare exception.

Grew up in North Central PA and used Mauser Sporter 98 rechambered in .270 over 100yrds, Marilin 1894 in 30-30 brush gun, Remington 870, smooth barrel in 12g, and Traditions flintlock 50 cal muzzleloader. I have used my .270 and Winchester 25-06 in ND and TX. 12g in OH. Now living in DE where we can't use rifle cartridge (only pistol cartridges), I use Savage Axis in 350 Legend, T/C Encore in 20g, and inline T/C Encore .50 cal muzzleloader. These are what I prefer and you are right it is up to the individual and not the hype. Thanks for your videos!

For deer hunting I usually go with my savage axis II chambered in 30-06... I'm young and I can't say I used this rifle for so many years but so far it never let me down. Also 30-06 is my favorite caliber because it is available in many bullet sizes where I live and I appreciate beeing able to choose between a 110 gr bullet that can be use for small and medium games and a 220 gr bullet for moose elk and bears... For everything at close range I use my Remington 870 pump action with a cylinder bore choke and deer 1 oz slugs... That's my setup so far. I know it is pretty classic but that's what works best for me. Thanks for reading me @Paul Harrell

Bushnell used to make the Scopechief 4X scope that the shooter could change between crosshairs and a BIG post in less than a minute. My father got one in the early 1960s for a Model 70 in .270 Winchester. His other rifle was an old, he bought it used in the 1930s, 94 Winchester.
My last deer was shot with the .270 at first light, in the cedars at about 50 yards as the deer was in an all out run and dropping out of sight. The bullet went in the back of the head and out the nose. With the big post I had not cleared the full scope picture when I touched the shot off.
My first antelope, my father saw it running and told me to sit and that when it stopped to hold about two inches over it’s hair. The shot hit the bottom of the spine JUST at the back of the shoulder.
The rifle was sighted for 275 yard zero which was Maximum Point Blank Range at about 325 yards.

Iron sights are good. Optics are better. If you're asking a soldier to risk life and limb charging towards bullets and mortars, you should give them anything that could possibly help them. If you can shoot 500 yards with iron sights, fantastic - but you can do it even faster with an optic.

An iron sight Swedish 96 6.5x55 is my deer and hog stalking rifle. Shortest shot, about 7 yards, 176 yards, the longest in Texas' "nopaleras" and thick Chaparral. I replaced the Swede "flat top" front sight with a VZ24s "pyramid" sight, slightly customized for slightly finer aiming. The stock is also inleted to accept an S&K scope mount for elk hunting out West. The inlets required are small and non obtrusive. In this caliber and configuration, it is the most versatile rifle I own.

    143gr Hornady ELDXs' for elk

My Favorites: In MA, we are restricted to Shotguns and Muzzle loaders (besides archery). My goto is a Remington 11-87 in 12 ga. shooting Winchester Super-X Slugs. My frontloader is a Savage Model ML10 with a Triple Seven Charge and 300 grain saboted Hornady. I also Hunt CT and my rifle of choice there is a Savage Model 110 in .30-06. Funny thing is I also have a Ruger Mark V in .338 Win. Mag. minus the brake. I have been scrutinized for using so my firepower on a deer since it generates almost twice the energy as a .30-06. I've used it in an Anticosti hunt and made shots out to 450 yards.

Good video. Truth be told...as long as using a capable round and placing the shot correctly then the deer (or other animal) won't care what round or firearm it was that ended him. Pretty much everyone I've hunted with over the years (in WA State) uses a bolt gun scoped 3-9x40 in 30-06 or 8mm Mauser (or similar) for both deer & elk season...
Below is what I currently use:
    1] 6.5 grendel AR15 with 1-8x24 Scope
    2] Mosin Nagant 91/30 7.62x54r 2-7x32 LER Scope (Sporterized, but don't worry...over 37 million of them & mine wasn't a rare! I unfortunately didn't happen to have Vasily Zeitseiv’s sniper rifle!)
3] Mossberg 930 Semi Auto 12GA 3" Shotgun (Rifled Barrel using Sabot rounds) 1.75-4x32 Scope
4] Magnum Research BFR Single Action Revolver 5.5" barrel .500jrh/.50ae (2 cylinders to swap between)
5] Mossberg Patriot 375RUG 2.5-10x40 Scope (intended to use only for stuff "bigger" then deer, like hopefully a Cape Buffalo one day.)
*Bonus/Wild Card is Chinese type 56 SKS factory condition including the spike bayonet (sans cosmoline removal) 7.62x39
    • The BFR & the SKS are the only NON-Scoped firearms I potentially use for hunting so I obviously favor magnification more than you do.
    • The AR (6.5 grendel) and the SKS (7.62x39) I only would take for deer season and the others tend to rotate in on both deer & elk seasons. Always take at least two capable firearms to a hunt personally.
    • I've hunted with bolt rifles in 7mm Mauser & 270 win in the past along with a smooth bore 12 ga pump moss 535. I don't have any of those firearms anymore though.
    Happy Hunting!

An interesting and well reasoned list.
For hunting deer at ranges out past 200 yards, there are a lot of completely acceptable calibers and that 338 Win Mag is definitely on that list. Some of the most common im my area are 30-06, 308 Win., 300 Win Mag and 270 Win, but there are a lot of others that work just as well. The biggest thing is, can you shoot it accurately enough at the ranges you expect to be shooting. I consider adequate accuracy to be an absolute maximum of a 6" group. If you can't put 100% of your shots in that 6" circle, you're shooting too far.
Some states only allow straight walled carbines or shotguns, so you have to work with what you have available and your list does that quite well.
Assuming you can shoot your chosen weapon accurately, the only things you need to really concern yourself with is that the bullet stays fast enough to expand properly (typically about 1,800 fps) and that it retains enough energy (I feel 1,000 ft/lbs to be the bare minimum) at your chosen distance to make a clean kill. Yes, a 6.5 Creedmoor shooting 140gr bullets might still be supersonic at 1,500 yards and the shooter might be able to consistently hit a 16" plate, but that means nothing if the bullet is only going 1,100 fps and has 400 ft lbs of energy left. Using what I consider to be minimum velocity and energy, that 6.5 Creedmoor is maxed out at 700 yards.

Paul, I love your videos. But our choices in hunting arms couldn't be more different. Used a Marlin in .35 Remington when I lived on the east coast but moved to Colorado 50 years ago. I only hunt elk and my choices are .30-06, .270 and .308. I tried a 7mm Rem Mag about 45 years ago, but it beat up my shoulder too much. My favorite for 30 years was a 1978 Ruger 77 that I put a 26 inch stainless steel barrel on in .30-06. I used Hornady Light Mag 180 grain and at one point I was 7 years, 7 shots and 7 elk at ranges from 50 to 475 yards. About 10 years ago I switched to .270 and gave the -06 to a grandson. Now, don't denigrate the .25-35 WCF. Back in the 80s I had an old wrangler friend who bought his in 1932 and never found a reason to change. He used one round per year and always got his elk. I asked at what range and he told me about 5 to 10 yards! He allowed as how he was a pretty good hunter, just not a good shot over 50 yards. He was also a hell of a horseman. He once won a $50 bet roping a pronghorn. In 1982 I had to buy him a new box of ammo in Denver because he bought his last box in 1962 and could no longer find any .25-35 where he lived in the San Luis Valley.

Where rifle hunting is permitted, deer should be taken with a lever action 30-30 in brushy country or a bolt action 30-06 in open country, doing otherwise may call your patriotism into question. For those with no national affiliation, any of the 6.5 millimeter rounds are also acceptable.

  • @ludwigvistilite

Seriously, anything from a .243win up to a .458win will be great for deer. They are usually 200-250lbs. They aren't Rhino's. The main consideration would be distance. Use something flat and fast for a long , open field shot such a .243 Win or .25-06 Rem. For a close in shot such as thick woods or tree stand , really anything works. I use a .308win or .30-06 spfd on almost everything. I own a .25-06 which has gotten several moose, so size isn't as important as shot placement. My .30-30 win has dropped at least 6 moose. (mostly 20-40 yard shots) from a boat on a river. Worry more about good placement of the bullet , than the actual bullet diameter.
My big game rifles are: Savage 110 -25-06rem, 1918 Winchester deluxe in .30-30, Remington model 7 in .308win, Thompson Center pro-hunter in .308win, Savage 110 .30-06spfd, Winchester Extreme Weather in .30-06spfd, Howa Lightning 1500 in .300 win mag, Marlin JM 1895 in 45/70 gvmt, and a Ruger Alaskan in .375 Ruger. I do not worry about which one I take, as any of them can and will humanely kill whatever walks in front of me. I use a Weatherby .223rem vanguard for coyotes and wolves/wolverines. Plus several rimfires for rabbits, Browning BL22, Mossberg 146ba and Savage BVSS in .22mag . My Mossberg shotguns do the game bird duty. I have 2x 500 in 12ga, one in 20ga and 1 in .410 guage. My Remington model 58 autoloader does duck duty. (I had the fixed full choke barrel opened up to I.C. for steel shot) Use the right tool for the job, and use enough gun. You can't "overkill" something. I like bigger bullets myself as they don't bloodshot as much meat as the smaller faster bullets do.

Where I hunt... short range ( yards or less) 30-30 in a Marlin 336. 100 yards + 30-06 Browning A bolt. Both guns with loads that each gun likes the best. From time to time I will break out the 257 Roberts. The 257 is probably my favorite. Low recoil and dead on if I do my part. I have taken bull and cow elk with this rifle, but at less than 100 yards.

Well, I hunt tin cans, black circles and occasionally heavy metal targets. I use a Marlin 97 .357 14,9 grains W295 or H110 and a 158 gr JHP up to 200 yards (and it does a good Job for that) I also have 357 Black hawk and Match Champion (100 yard max) I have an M1 Garand (47 grains IMR 4895 and a 150 grain FMJ) that is a good paper killer out to about to about 500 yards (but my eyes are not that good any more) I saw an Army Sgt from Camp Atterbury Indiana hit a large metal target iron sights M1 Garand 1500 yards (military ammo) at Whittington center. Holy cow! The150 grain IMR4895 is not a max load for 30-06 (it is for M1). My other " tin can calibers are " 45LC, 9mm, M1 Carbine .. 38 spcl. Black circles do not go down easily no matter what range (they can take a lickin) I don't kill stuff anymore but I do use the 39-2 for home (bed stand) and I have had to use it for that (but he left without delay or protocol)

Roy Harrell I use my late Father's Remington model 700 BDL that he bought the year I was born ( 67 ) exclusively these days for sentimental reasons . Plus the old Remington's were some of the best rifles our country ever produced. Still has the original Redfield 2×7 scope on it , and it's held its zero since I sighted it for my eyes . Granted 30-06 is overkill for our whitetails , but the trick is to use big 180 grainer's so as not to bloodshot half the Deer like the 150 's do , learned that the hard way . The '06 is truly the Jack of all trades , tho probably master of none .

  • @reb1050

A lot depends on where you hunt. I don't need a rifle that can drop a deer at 300 yds. My selection is limited to a .12 ga. shotgun, a simple Marlin 30-30 (or 35. Remington if I can find one at a good price), and a .308 bolt action (Ruger Gunsite Scout). I also have a Winchester Model 70 featherweight in a 30-06, but it's basically retired in favor of the .308. Occasionally I will go out with a pistol only, and when I do, it's a Ruger Redhawk .44 magnum with a 7.5" barrel. My wife uses a 7mm-08 BLR

I've had my Marlin 444 SS Safety sporter for 30 years give or take. I've taken a lot of deer with it. I hand load from 220 gr. They 300gr. My choice round is 265gr. I guess I'm used to it because that's what they have in the store when ammo was normal price. Your right it's not a fun rifle to shoot because of the recoil. I use Skinner sights there great to 100 yards . 80% of my game is 70 yards or closer. I wouldn't shoot much further than that because I like to drop them no tracking. I have and a scope only for target shooting. A simple 3-9x40 AO to help the eyes get to 200 yards. I don't hunt anymore only Boar. The VFW has a sponsored hunt for wild hogs lot of fun. I also have and use a KAR98K 8MM. I can't believe I use two of five rifles as you. Good deal. I wouldn't purchase a rifle without iron sights it's like buying a car without tires. PS great spoon shot in the beginning of the video.

I have several deer rifles and bigger. Around home , the brushy swamps and pines make a 06 or such a second or third choice, unless hunting power lines or such. Mostly the old 30-30 or 44mag get the nod. Sometimes the 357 if it is going to be real close in.
The wife has a sweet little 243, but she prefers the 357 most of the time. The old levers are just built for closer in hunting.
Lite fast handling. For bigger stuff in close the 45-70 takes the day.

Same here. I bought a Savage Scout .308 4 years ago, have yet to even see a deer when I've hunted with it. I've applied the coup de gras to 5 deer in the past 2 years with my Sccy 9mm, after having been hit by cars. Two I drove up to the wreck, two I came upon after the driver had drove off and they were flopping around on the side of the road. The last one was about a month ago, and was lying in the ditch when I came across it while working. I'll spare the details, but it had been there for a while, and looked relieved when I approached it.

I use a .30-06. Easy to find ammo and it is a nice size to use on anything from dear to moose in most areas. Devastating at close range and accurate at long. There is a reason it's been used for a long time.
