Slugs aren't the same as shot as we all know. Small amount of history from an old timer. Foster slugs were designed from the start to function in both choked and open choked guns. The hollow base will expand to the bore just like a Minie ball. The "rifling" was so the slug could swage down through the choke. For many years there was debate as to whether or not the rifling imparted spin, but Taofledermaus proved that it does provide some spin. Before Foster slugs we used "pumpkin balls" - round balls just like BP balls. These needed to be used in open choked guns. One guy I knew fired a pumpkin ball through his full choked gun, and he swore that after he quit rubbing his shoulder, his gun had become modified choke.
Brenneke slugs state plainly that they should only be used in open choked guns, or at most IC choked guns.
With rifled shotgun barrels, and interchangeable choke tubes there shouldn't ever be a problem.
Thanks for this video. Good job.

I remember as a kid trying slugs in a 20-gauge Iver Johnson with a full choke barrel, and it was throwing them all over the place. Maybe it varies depending on the individual gun, but I think I'd stick with cylinder bore or improved cylinder.

I tend to fire Foster slugs through open cylinder 12 gauges. I like break open, single shots as deer guns, but I do have a couple of M&P 12 gauges, that are pumps and open cylinder, which work just as well as the singles for slug and buck, when deer hunting.

That improved cylinder “group” was you pulled the second shot 4” to the right. I thought you must’ve tried to windage and changed your aiming point. The 1st and 3rd shots being so close to each other supports that.

  • @MrT13
    @MrT13 ปีที่แล้ว

I shoot tru balls that measure .730 so I tried a few different chokes and I found right around that diameter I think my Carlson one I use is rifled and right at .730 which is perfect cause I imagine that ball pushes up in the cavity in the back and opens it up a bit and makes an even better seal. Best choke I’ve seen slugs go through.

Have you compared 12 to 16 to 20 to see which shorts the best groups?
On your bench use 2x4's screwed together to make an angle iron looking legs. Cut the top at a 7-10 degree angle so they point out both sideways and front to back. Adding bracing front to back and side to side between the legs will stiffen it up even more.
You can make the legs long enough to sit or stand. Perhaps one of each. Sitting is ok for most low recoil guns but the real kickers a standing is easier on your body.

You confirmed what I have been telling people for decades. I have been shooting foster slugs with my humpback Browning Auto 5 since I was a kid and have not damaged the barrel at all it still measures out at "FULL CHOKE," I shoot good consistent patterns and have never gotten any noticeable leading in the barrel. Over the decades I have fired hundreds of shells, the barrel is in good as new condition. Listen to Kirk Boswell what he says is 100% correct.

Keep it that way, that's the charme of this channel. Bring on on improvements, but don't change👍

Thanks! I don't plan on changing, I do want to make things better here at the range though. I have a long work commute and don't see much daylight at home so that's why I don't get to put out many videos. It keeps me grounded though. Thanks for watching and leaving the comment!

I agree. Change is not always a good thing. I really like the shotgun videos, especially the Maverick 88 video. Hope everybody has a Happy New Year.

When you are shooting observe the front sight or have someone watch your muzzle for barrel flip. When your barrel recoils straight up the shot will be centered. Then the barrel flips too the left the shot goes to the left. Adjust your butt placement in your shoulder and your hold pressure until the barrel flips straight up. This will greatly improve your shooting.
Review the video and see what i am talking about. When you put them in the bullseye the barrel doesnt flip to the left. It recoils straight back and up.
    Thankyou for the video.

Yeah, I noticed his barrel jumping to the left also. Probably because of 2 things. He's not holding the fore-end to keep the barrel steady throughout the shot, and the ejection on the right side probably adds push to the left as well.

I notice the tighter the choke the more the muzzle jumps. Perhaps due to lead swaging through that tight restriction. Great shooting. Nice video, thanks for sharing.

The things we learn from shooting. I really though the full, or the modified choke would've given a dramatic difference in groups. Great video, bud. Thanks for sharing!

Good video and I liked the choice of shotgun used because there are a lot of hunters out there that only own one shotgun and use it on everything from ducks to turkeys to deer. As far as I could tell, every one of those groups was a dead deer at 90 yards, and at around 50 yards (distance where most deer are killed) those would have been groups under 3". Plenty accurate.

Another choke comparison that DID NOT include a rifled choke. WHY? To do a complete real test you should do a smooth bore, cylinder, improved cylinder, modified, full, rifled, then the exact same on rifled barrel. so 6 from a smooth bore, 6 from a rifled bore. 3-5 shots per = 36-60 shots. Better get a good butt pad. THen you could do smooth slugs vs rifled slugs, 120 shots now.

Interesting results. Seems like years ago, every one claimed NOT to use a full choke with slugs. Oh how times change.

I think some of that confusion comes from people lumping all slugs in the same category. Someone cracks a muzzle shooting a Brenneke solid slug through a full choke and suddenly all slugs should be shot from a cylinder bore. People who don't know the different types of slugs should indeed just stick to cylinder bore. Yeah the beautiful fall foliage didn't last long. Thanks for tuning in!!

Buffalo's Outdoors you are EXACTLY correct about the different types of slugs, like Brenneke! I use them almost exclusively for hunting, because of the qualities of the solid bodies. Two thumbs up on your knowledge of what you speak. A breath of fresh air!

I'm not surprised that the choke doesn't make that much of a difference with slugs. I find that a rifled choke tube really helps stabilize the slugs.
