    Nick,
    Since watching your videos on PVC bows I have been building bows and dowel arrows. I have not been sure if I would really enjoy archery or just enjoy building bows. It looks like I am getting into archery but the cost of arrows has been holding me back. I got some ebay graphite that aren't any better than the dowels I have been making. I did score a dozen Easton superlite shafts that I am in the process of fletching. The seem to fly great but I am not sure that they will hold up to my make shift targets and my occasional misses. I think I may keep an eye open at my local Walmart as well as for hard wood shafting dowels.
    I think I am enjoying the building of the bows and arrows as much as shooting. I would enjoy seeing how you dip and fletch arrows.
    Keep up the good work, your videos are great and have shown me (and I am sure others) a new hobby!

    Hi Nick, Nice to see you are still putting up new videos. Great stuff. I still can't believe you moved from Hawaii to the Northwest - On purpose. But I guess it's all about priorities.
    Anyway, I for one would love to see how you are re-fletching these arrows. That would be awesome. Please do.
    Thanks for all the videos and hard work.

    Hey Nick,
    I would certainly like to see how you refletch those arrows. I like the durability of carbon shafts but prefer flights or feathers, over vanes, so it would be a big help. I also shoot longbow and horsebow, so vanes aren't exactly preferable.
    Thanks for the vids :)

    Thanks for the review. I have been curious about the walmart arrows and if they are worth the investment. I also wanted to thank you Rick because I now have a new hobby. I have renewed my childhood interest in archery and have made several bows thanks to you (and Tim Piatek) videos. You guys are great.

    Thank you for this review! I too have some Wal-Mart carbon arrows I bought on closeout and also noticed after I got them home the alignment of the fletching left a bit to be desired. 3 of the 6 arrows I have are OK; the other 3 will have to be re-fletched.

    I have not purchased any Allen arrows, but did purchase Carbon Express and Wolverine arrows for $3.50 each.
    The fletching provided for Wal-Mart did not provide any stability. I re-fletched them with NAP's QuikSpin ST Speed Hunter fletches and they fly quick and true out of my York or Indian recurves. At 442 grains, they were too light fo my Oneida bow and were leaving the bow before the string caught up, leaving a loose string that dropped the peep sight, dampeners or even dropping off the bow nock (bad for the limbs)!
    I added weight tubes and brought the arrows up to 531 grains (31" draw on 32" arrows) and everything worked right again.
    I also fletched some as flu-flus and discovered the disadvantage of these low weight arrow, again. I have these re-fletched with only 3 4" uncut feathers and weight tubes and all is good, now.
    Of course I have several hundred 11/32" Port Orford Cedar shafts, which make the best flu-flus!

    Thanks you for all of your videos. Archery is such a great wholistic hobby even though I would never hunt an animal as I'm a vegetarian. Archery is a parallel for my spiritual development in that the learning process never ends, never ceases to evolve on how to make something or techniques in shooting. Would love to see you make a video walk through on, how to re-fletch a carbon arrow. I've been making arrows using 3/8" wood dowels. Seems pretty thick. I found the smaller diameters to wiggle too much. I shoot most accurately with 3/8" by making the diameter smaller towards the rear of the arrow. I fletch it using artificial sinew & feathers from local art stores. The broadhead I make based from your HG video using sheet metal. Highly effective for killing old pillows & couch seats that I prop up inside abandoned suitcases. Anyways, it's always great to see another new video upload from you. Peace out... & within.

    Thanks for the info!
    I've been shopping at the local mom & pop archery/hunting shop here in town, and they've been selling me the wooden dowel arrows for $3 each over this past spring and summer.
    I just noticed that walmart had arrows in stock again the other day when I went in to pick up a sleeping pad (camping). I'm going to pick up a few of these carbon arrows as I've never shot one before. If they are more durable than the wooden ones I'll be saving some money...finally!
    I blow up wood the ones...at least 3-4 arrows snapped each time I go practice.
    I suck still...
    =(

    • @davisrs1
      @davisrs1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Be careful of the modern Wal-Mart wood shafts. Most that I have seen, even in the mom and pop stores do not have a continuous parallel grain from end to end. That IS an absolute necessity so they don't splinter coming out of the bow. Rule number 2 is to have the proper spine for your draw weight bow.
      There are charts all over the Internet that list the proper deflection for a given draw weight. recurves slam the arrow harder at release and require a stiffer arrow (numerically lower deflection on a jig) than a compound bow that starts pushing the arrow at 20 to 50% of the full draw weight and continues to accelerate harder as the string approaches the max draw point. It's sort of like using the explosive force of black powder vs the continuous pressure down the barrel from modern smokeless powders in a rifle.!

      Thank you for that info sir. I've upgraded to aluminum arrows and won't be going back to wood if I don't have to.

    • @davisrs1
      @davisrs1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've jumped from good cedar shafts to carbon arrows with weight tubes.
      If I miss with wood ans hit a stump or rock, the tip gets mangled and the arrow keeps getting shorter.
      Aluminum usually kinks or splits and becomes unusable or dangerous in case of a kink. Fiberglass always shattered as did some of the early carbon layup arrows, but I love how the newer arrows by Carbon Express or Wolverine handle abuse. I shoot squirrels, turkey, grouse, and rabbits with blunts or broadheads and may lose a point, but the arrow usually survives...only destroyed one so far!!!

    It seems to me that most of the higher priced $7 to $11 arrows at
    Walmart are left over stock of previous years premium arrows sold at the
    major outdoor stores. Not much of a discount on price, but you don't
    have to buy a dozen at a time. That is huge for me. I can manage to afford two or three $11 arrows, but $132 is tough.

    Bought a bunch of Walmart carbon arrows when I discovered them. And this coming season I'll buy as many as I can find. Refletching would be nice to see. As survival arrows I'd leave them alone but for filling the freezer I'd like a little more accuracy so teach on.

    Hi Nick, I've recently taken up PVC bow making thanks to you (video posted w/ shoot out). I have to get more arrows, thanks for all the good information. My draw length is 28" - 29", my sons is 26" to 27". Is there a significant disadvantage to him shooting 31" arrows? Thanks, Cheers

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the shout out on your video, those are some nice bows! Generally speaking, a long arrow will be heavier and more flexible than a shorter one. That said, you probably won't notice a difference and it's not a bad thing. If he's shooting those long arrows and they fly well, there's nothing wrong with them.

    Hey man really dig your channel. I have had a lot of luck with these from a 55lb long bow. they make great stumping and small game arrows. I bare shaft tested them out to 18 pretty extensively and wound up with the 31 inchers and 225grains up front. the 29's were just too stiff. Any idea what their actually spine is? my guess is right around .400

    The nocks on the carbon arrows: be careful using them with a paracord string. They may come off by either staying on the string or you'll lose them after releasing the arrow.

    Dear friend, hello, you mentioned the 28" Allen youth arrow, spine weight 20-35 lbs. Would they be ok to use with a 30 pound takedown recurve bow? I have a 27" draw length, so I think they would be a good match to my bow. You mentioned lack of consistancey.

    Hey there, i was curious if you have built any of your own targets or target stands. If so what has worked for you? I am looking for something compact, light and can still withstand several archers shooting at it at a single time. I have thought about using PVC to make something but i am not sure how well it would hold up to a barrage of arrows. =)

    Love the video, your vids are getting me into archery. After buying a bow at the local bowyer i bought some wooden arrows much like the carbon ones you have (the only thing that seems to be different that it has wood shafting) Im shooting a fiberglass horsebow (37 Pounds at 30 inches) and some of them broke about 2 inches away from the fletching (Shooting foam slabs)
    Any tips on how to keep these things alive?
    Anyways, love the videos and keep up the good work!

  • @Munky332
    @Munky332 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    can't remember the arrows i had, but they were fairly cheap and came in a cardboard box package of 6, probably less than 5$ a peice (im fairly frugal). i shot them out of my bowtech assassin (I had to sell it unfortunately, loved that bow. looking for a cheap bow now to replace it), and they were great for cheap arrows. I think they were carbon express? they were the higher quality ones. my only complaint is, like you said, the vanes. mine were good for awhile, good enough accuracy, BUT they got damaged real easily. i have only 2 that survived with vanes. once i get a new bow, if i do, i'll have to re-vane them, or buy another pack if they still have them.

      I personally like wood arrows. There are lots of choices for wood shafting depending on the qualities you want in your finished arrow. The most popular wood is Port Orford Cedar, which is a good balance of weight and strength. I personally like hardwoods and the heavier softwoods because I prefer a higher grains per inch on my arrows. I'm planning on doing some videos on building wood arrows soon. If you prefer to buy finished arrows, check out Ted at www.raptorarchery.com . He makes some really nice arrows and will work with you to figure out what you want in terms of species, taper/no taper, nock style, etc..

    Once i finally made my own pvc bow i needed arrows,
    My local walmart has them for $3- 3.50 each arrow
    31 inch carbon
    Recommended 9/32 field points
    Rated 45- 75pound
    Allen brand made in china
    "super-walmart Beaumont California"
    I have 6 now cause i broke one trying out a atlatl i made. Fail throw to the ground
    Even a cheap arrow can last long with a lil added industrial adhesive.
    Also with a proper arrow rest u should have the fletching undamaged
    if everything is high and tight.

    my local walmart dont sell archery , rifle , and ammo, we live in a gun oppressed state we have to shop at specialty stores in order to get supplies . i blame all the liberals and the politicians they voted for who enact strict rules and laws regardind 2nd amendment rights . it is the democrat agenda in this state and yes even somerepublicans who for the sake of political correctness enact legislation against our 2nd amendment rights !!
