    I can hear some airband clearly on mine down to 128 Mhz, but I had to offset all the frequencies a little (+0.005). On some frequencies it's muffled or one sided and with the volume turned up you get a loud crack with the squelch closing. ATIS always sounds good which is handy for the weather. I use it as a cheap scanner and found ~18 UHF channels for MCR using a cheap SDR.
    It's a shame they don't repeat the approach frequency so I could hear what's flying around nearby too.

    Interesting post thanks. For what its worth you can't hear am on an FM set but you can hear FM on an am set that let's you fine tune the frequency. By tuning a bit off channel the frequency change of the FM translates to signal strength change so decodes as (roughish) speech :)

    I've got a uv-5r stock 136/400MHZ antenna and I'm picking up Manchester airport on this frequency and I live 20+ miles away. Can't believe it I can hear the tower and the planes comming in to land very clear if I hold the radio right and keep my phone away from it. It is quite high ground where I live but I wasn't expecting to get anything.

    • @indridcold8433
      @indridcold8433 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was able to modify the frequency range to 126Mhz to 272Mhz with a gap at 180 to 190 and then 380Mhz to 543Mhz. I hear a lot now! One can listen to the AM frequencies but they are a bit on the staticy side and low volume. But FM has a huge reservoir of frequencies to listen to. You might even be able to push the transmit button on PMR446 and LPR433 and nobody will know what radio you are using. If you get the amateur radio foundation license, you can even push that tempting little transmit button on 2 meter frequencies and 70 centimeter frequencies. You can listen to 4 meter frequencies as well using the broadcast radio receive feature. It can be set to 66Mhz to 88Mhz and the 4 meter conversations can be heard. I may yet get that pesky foundation license.

  • @russiangopnik9639
    @russiangopnik9639 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As long as you respect the frequency range, In an actual emergency without a phone, even without a ham license. All is good. Just remember your meters and the frequency spectrum.

    • @dwightstewart7181
      @dwightstewart7181 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to clarify. The FCC defines emergency as immediate safety of life or protection of property when no other means of communications is available (97.403). This rules out most common emergencies. If you hear a noise outside, call 911. If your car breaks down, walk to a phone. If your house is on fire, go to a neighbor's house. This rule also doesn't justify the use of illegal/uncertified radio equipment (a Baofeng on aircraft frequencies, etc). You can still be heavily fined for such - not for the emergency call, but for the use of that radio.

      @@Francois_Dupont .. However, the radio frequencies aren't a toy. With those frequencies more crowded than ever before, they're a valuable, even critical, resource that must be regulated and protected to avoid interference and disruptions. Besides, the FCC (or whatever regulating agency) gave us a plentiful chunk (CB, Ham, FRS, etc) to play with.

      If the small, one runway, "international" airport in my hometown does, I suspect most airports throughout the USA do. You just need to find the frequencies used. Actually, I think this is an international effort to facilitate the eventual switch from AM to FM for aeronautics. If true, all airports worldwide will eventually simulcast, with AM ultimately dropped at some point.

      @@grj512 .. Well, we'll see. The FM they're using now is not digital. AM served it's purpose, allowing fairly long range communications with minimal equipment. That long range will be a hurdle for FM radio, but I'm sure they have a plan.

    I use it to get Alaska Airlines to find out when a family member comes in. I wish it did true AM airband, I currently have to lend a radio when I fly my little floatplane. Not going to spend $200 on airband when I end up using mostly marine FM.

    I am supposed to be able to listen and transmit on the CTAF frequency when conducting services near the airport - is this possible with the baofeng BF-F8HP radio? Thank you
