I genuinely thought this was as close to perfect as Doctor Who can get, felt like a tremendous combination of the episode Midnight and the Big Finish audio Scherzo, two of my favorite Doctor Who stories of all time, and one of the most deep and emotional explorations on the relationship between the Doctor and one of his companions, while also balancing a series of ongoing mysteries that slowly build up and explode (literally) over time and a monster that’s both existentially horrific and classically camp in such a Doctor Who way

Are they cool and creepy, or silly and over-the-top? The answer is: yes. Yes they are :) Having said that, I think your theory about the old face is probably the best explanation I've heard. Canon or not, it works well with all the facts at hand.

I thought the opening was a bit misplaced, didn't really add much. I really liked the episode but didn't feel it worked particularly well as an anniversary special.

I admit I also went in with 0 spoilers too although I was unable to watch it on broadcast. And I loved it. It’s honestly the best story I remember reacting to on first broadcast since turn left (although other stories have grown on me since their broadcast such as heaven sent)
Sad you didn’t love it as much as I did, let’s all hope the giggle blows us away even more

i actually really like your theroy, that jodie's doctor kinda retreated into 10, and refused to move on. i mean what better face to exemplafy this than the one who famously didnt wanna go
i also think the monsters this episode deffinatly leaned more into the creapy/uncanny side for me personally

I, too, thought of Attack of the Titans, which added to the scariness for me.

The "Madras" just refers to the sauce, so you could have cat or dog Madras if you're evil enough, and not under surveillance by the RSPCA ;) I haven't - yet! - had tuna Madras, but I've had other fish curries, and I love 'em.

Hearing you talk about your initial feelings and then feelings upon rewatch feels exactly the same to what I experienced. Great video, not finished yet, but I enjoying it, and I thank you for uploading, once again! I can't wait for your thoughts on the giggle 🙂

19:35 - You can believe they were cool and creepy *and* silly and over the top. Two things at once. 😛

I really enjoyed this episode it was a great look into the doctor and Donna and I loved it and also if u just combine the timeless child with the hole cartnell master plan and everything revealed in lungbarrow then it’s fine. As in lungbarrow the other disappeared after he through himself into the lomb core so he could be reborn thousands of years later as the doctor just combine it with the timeless child arc then it’s fine

So far the special are a fantastically mixed and almost opposite bag. Star beast with great special effects with for the villain, and this with sime janky effects but very much character driven. Neither a bad thing. Has the fandom itself caused an exaggerated expectation of the day of the doctor x 3?
But the i servicable/decent enough good enough for 60th?🤔
And the biggest problem with the episode! Tom Baker's doctor explain he threw the apple on newtons head! They are breakjng cannon!😅

I don't really understand the qualms about the silliness, I would far prefer to show someone who has not seen doctor who Wild Blue Yonder then The Star Beast, the not-things are creepy in there funniness, they kind of whimsical and detached from aspects of reality we would consider concrete. I would have thought this would be your kind of episode too, since it is a slower and more contemplative feel. It is kind of something like Midnight or Heaven sent, but the doctors is not alone, he and Donna are able to rely on each other (rather then the doctor relying on himself) and reason through the situation.

That's a fair point. It definitely grew on me the second time around. 🙂
