I stopped in 2009, after 10 years of solid training, but I still think about going back sometimes. I still go the gym but for some reason the pandemic is holding me back from Jujitsu or trying some Maui Thai.
@@BK_2016sr5 lol, why not? I can go back at this point but I don't want to spend $200 a month or whatever it is they'll ask me for. I have too many other financial responsibilities at this time.
@@damienholland9244 coulda woulda shoulda type. If from 2009 you stopped and didn’t get together in 13 years to afford an extra $200 a month to train then you’re right you def have bigger priorities
Congratulations Betty!! I'm competing in my first competition, tap cancer out, this Sunday as a 48 year old white belt and you are definitely inspiring me! Oss! 🎉🙌🙏
So, not trying to be negative here, but does anyone who puts in enough time get a black belt? I get that relative to others her age, she can probably kick some ass. However, could she actually take on another black belt who’s half her age? Assuming she wouldn’t really be able to do all that well, how does it make sense that the two fighters would have the same belt? In no way am I trying to say she doesn’t deserve it. I honestly have very little knowledge on how getting belts work in MMA. Does each martial art have its own way of earning belts? I’m genuinely curious because it seems a little crazy on the surface that this lady could have the same “rank” as people she may not even be able to beat on the mat. I’m sure if I knew more about it, it would start to make more sense.
Belts are a sign of skill, not results. We already have a metric for results in martial arts - your fight record. All the belt is showing is you know and can do everything that is required for this belt, not that you have the same speed/power/endurance that people in your belt. If you got your black belt in your 30-s, should you lose it in your 80-s when you obviously become a weaker contender? Belts are more like academic ranks than champion titles.
Answering your second question - yes, not only different martial arts, but even different movements/schools/trainers inside the same one have different belt procedures. But in general, belts are given for investing time and learning the art and can be accelerated by show of talent or drive.
Definitely a valid point, a belt doesn't tell the full story even in Jiu jitsu. But if only the top athletes could hold a black belt, then there would be virtually no black belts, which is kind of what things were like when Jiu jitsu started in the early to mid 20th century. A black belt to most people is an indication of continued dedication to the craft over a long period of time, which may or may not necessarily correlate directly to skill level. Also important to remember that a black belt is really only the beginning in Jiu jitsu, and there's levels within the rank. There's also competition blue belts that would destroy hobbyist black belts. Probably best to not think about it and enjoy the ride, oss.
No need to feel bad for the competitor on the left - she's on the podium, right? So she must have gotten a good result in this tournament. And she looks quite happy to be there with Betty. ✌️
I’ve been out of jiu jitsu for about 5 years and this is inspiring me to get back in there.

And lastly, I've seen Betty perform and she definitely CAN hold her own against an average black belt, even in her age.
