I started 2 years ago at the age of 51...in fact l started the week of my 51st birthday 😅. Best thing I ever did and has improved my life in so many ways that I didn’t know it would. Good on you mate 👍👊
Needed to hear this badly today - I have been feeling awful since a terrible competition performance last weekend and I needed to be reminded of why these tough times are so important in the perspective of the journey.. What a wonderful speech - she summed up the best of BJJ in just 5 short minutes.. Congrats on a remarkable achievement, Teri.
My coach told me who cares what belt you are who cares how you do in a tournament your goal in jiu jitsu isn’t to win or get to the next belt it’s to become better with every roll to be the best you and if you lose then learn there is no lose don’t hold on to tough “losses” just learn from them I’ve made my biggest leaps in my skills when I get smashed because it fuels me to the next level osss!
The saying goes “you are never truly rich until you have something money can’t buy” Teri has two things, a black belt in Jiu Jitsu and that amazing speech. She is so inspirational I’m now contemplating my whole life. What an amazing place to train. Oss
Ive only been training for 3 years. Started at 48. Been injured at least a third of that time and when injured I just stay home. No more. This speech really affected me. If I get hurt again, I am still going to class. I am going to take notes. I am going to drill as much as I can. I am going to work grips. I am going to watch videos. I won't pause my journey again. Thank you, professor Teri!
@@phillipgrimshaw9760 Ha, yes indeed. Purple belt now and doing some coaching. Have learned a bit of wisdom (I hope) concerning who rolling smart. The injury bug has gotten much better.
Yeah but at the same time listen to your body. I through my back out doing judo once and instead of letting it heal I continued and really messed up my back. I was out for 6 months, because I was too stubborn to listen to my body when it was telling me to take a break and heal. If I would have just listened to my body I would have been out for just a few weeks instead 6 months.
👍I've been doing Jiu Jitsu for 16 years started at 40 with Gracie Barra and I still try to go 3 times a week. It's the best thing I've ever done. When you get your black belt I think that's when you really start learning the art.
@@ceenote311 two ACL surgeries with a meniscus and a broken bone in my hand. Never have injured my shoulder, knock on wood. ACL we're blown out doing standup takedowns. I just stay on the ground now I've been injury free for about 10 years, about since my black belt I guess I got smarter. All and all I still think it's the best thing I've ever done. I look at my friends at 60 and the huff and puff going up a flight of stairs. They ache all over and are out of shape. My hands have arthritis but they have it to. I know injuries are a concern but you can injure yourself doing about anything.
dude I'm a white belt and this had me in tears. I've only been doing jiu jitsu 9 months, but I know I will be a black belt one day BECAUSE I will never stop training BECAUSE I feel alive when I roll.
The words she speaks couldn’t be more true and resonating to anybody who has walked the walk and been on those mats. The best times, the worst times.. it’s why we do it. I show up to every class early because I want to be there. I’m the last to leave because I don’t want it to end. It’s truly my happy place. Congrats to her and all of those who seek their happy place. Wherever it may be.
This was a great speech. I’m glad they let her go on as long as she needed. I started my BJJ journey in 2002 but I’ve always let work and various life problems keep me from ever training consistently. It’s stuff like this that motivates me to keep at it.
I spent 8 hours with Professor Romulo, and he has an aura about him. I am thankful that my Professor is great friends with Professor Romulo. I hope to see him again soon. You guys are extremely lucky. 🙏
Nice speech by professor and her. You can really see the passion she has gained in bjj. You really have to have a passion doing martial arts broken fingers, cracked ribs, broken toes, busted lips, broken tooth, throwing up, and etc. I know exactly what she is talking about to never quit and come back for next class. Now you are a black belt you help teach the art as best as you can.
Wow. That speech brought me to tears because I realised that o truly find happiness in life is to be all that you can be no matter the condition of your mind so long as the condition of your heart is being transformed to building the best you that you can be.Sincere thanks for sharing your heart and your passion. A beautiful soul.
Thank you for this video! Helped me understand a lot! Iv Just started Jiu Jitsu and am Very green but I am super hooked!!!! A guy I really look up to a lot was always telling me I should come. Really top guy who I do work for! He’s easily top 2 guys I know, the first being my Father! There was a time I wasn’t very well and he’d always be the one to just “check in” always at stupid o’clock in the evening as neither of us sleep… he Gave me prep talks for starting my own business and just always been some one I enjoy picking his brain, he’s full of wisdom! Anyway I always had a reason for not having “enough time” and things have just aligned and he’s now coaching/training me! From the start I feel like he’s been really invested in me! Super cool feeling and after this video I think I get a sense of why now! 100% committed to making him proud on and off the Matt!
There’s something spiritually cathartic about getting a black belt and Ms. Reeves’ words are spot on! At 49, I began my journey in Tae Keon Do and currently earning my stripes towards 2nd degree dan. 🔥
Amazing video, Jiu Jitsu (or any martial art for the Martial Art Police that patrol this realm) is the medicine we all need as It works to cure hubris, ego, and self-doubt and enriches our lives by interaction with those that are sharing our journey.
Very awesome speech (I do Jiu Jitsu because it makes me a stronger human and happier human) love that part, I can relate to that. Congratulations Teri Reeves on your black belt from Gracie Barra Kapolei!!!!
I haven't got a black belt in jiu jitsu yet, i'm far, far off it. I'm a third degree karateka, but man, this speech hit me in the feels. I LOVE jiu jitsu. I love this journey.
beautifully said! I love the wear on the old belt! My 1st thought is she is now a noob again! she has a brand new shiny blackbelt for everyone to know she is new to the belt! Keep the ritual going! Respect
Henzo told me before he gave me my black belt. “You did soo much for your community that you sacrificed yourself to lift them up and created yourself out of the fires of your former self. You became the phoenix then you died again and again and instead of being self righteous and showing your skill you waited. Because what is your ideal heaven if you are alone in eternity? You waited uplifted those around you and you put them above yourself. Then you felt you deserved it.” I probably sat there in that room for 8 hours trying to figure out what he meant by what he said. He said bro you should probably take a shower you stink of humbleness and my friend you have earned it.” I felt like I needed to do more because although I had brought up 100+ people to a higher better self I was like I got 8 billion people to go.
Romylo is a great person and a beast on the mats, had the priviledge to roll with him when i was a purple belt...he destroyed me.Prof Draculino ideals go on throw him,as he said, and i m totally sure that this woman gonna keep that legacy
I've just started my Jiu Jitsu journey at 50 years old .
Good on you man and all the best

The title isn't lying. That was the best black belt speech ever.
Her speech starts at 9:35, just an FYI.

Look at the wear on that brown belt. Definitely well deserved.
I heard she accidentally left it out in the sun for a few days in the summer 🌞 😎. That's sun damage , not wear and tear..🤣jk
