Needed to hear this badly today - I have been feeling awful since a terrible competition performance last weekend and I needed to be reminded of why these tough times are so important in the perspective of the journey.. What a wonderful speech - she summed up the best of BJJ in just 5 short minutes.. Congrats on a remarkable achievement, Teri.

My coach told me who cares what belt you are who cares how you do in a tournament your goal in jiu jitsu isn’t to win or get to the next belt it’s to become better with every roll to be the best you and if you lose then learn there is no lose don’t hold on to tough “losses” just learn from them I’ve made my biggest leaps in my skills when I get smashed because it fuels me to the next level osss!

Ive only been training for 3 years. Started at 48. Been injured at least a third of that time and when injured I just stay home. No more. This speech really affected me. If I get hurt again, I am still going to class. I am going to take notes. I am going to drill as much as I can. I am going to work grips. I am going to watch videos. I won't pause my journey again. Thank you, professor Teri!

Yeah but at the same time listen to your body. I through my back out doing judo once and instead of letting it heal I continued and really messed up my back. I was out for 6 months, because I was too stubborn to listen to my body when it was telling me to take a break and heal. If I would have just listened to my body I would have been out for just a few weeks instead 6 months.

@@ceenote311 two ACL surgeries with a meniscus and a broken bone in my hand. Never have injured my shoulder, knock on wood. ACL we're blown out doing standup takedowns. I just stay on the ground now I've been injury free for about 10 years, about since my black belt I guess I got smarter. All and all I still think it's the best thing I've ever done. I look at my friends at 60 and the huff and puff going up a flight of stairs. They ache all over and are out of shape. My hands have arthritis but they have it to. I know injuries are a concern but you can injure yourself doing about anything.

The words she speaks couldn’t be more true and resonating to anybody who has walked the walk and been on those mats. The best times, the worst times.. it’s why we do it. I show up to every class early because I want to be there. I’m the last to leave because I don’t want it to end. It’s truly my happy place. Nice speech by professor and her. You can really see the passion she has gained in bjj. You really have to have a passion doing martial arts broken fingers, cracked ribs, broken toes, busted lips, broken tooth, throwing up, and etc. I know exactly what she is talking about to never quit and come back for next class. Now you are a black belt you help teach the art as best as you can.

Thank you for this video! Helped me understand a lot! Iv Just started Jiu Jitsu and am Very green but I am super hooked!!!!
A guy I really look up to a lot was always telling me I should come. Really top guy who I do work for! He’s easily top 2 guys I know, the first being my Father!
There was a time I wasn’t very well and he’d always be the one to just “check in” always at stupid o’clock in the evening as neither of us sleep… he Gave me prep talks for starting my own business and just always been some one I enjoy picking his brain, he’s full of wisdom! Anyway I always had a reason for not having “enough time” and things have just aligned and he’s now coaching/training me!
From the start I feel like he’s been really invested in me! Super cool feeling and after this video I think I get a sense of why now! 100% committed to making him proud on and off the Matt!

Henzo told me before he gave me my black belt. “You did soo much for your community that you sacrificed yourself to lift them up and created yourself out of the fires of your former self. You became the phoenix then you died again and again and instead of being self righteous and showing your skill you waited. Because what is your ideal heaven if you are alone in eternity? You waited uplifted those around you and you put them above yourself. Then you felt you deserved it.” I probably sat there in that room for 8 hours trying to figure out what he meant by what he said. He said bro you should probably take a shower you stink of humbleness and my friend you have earned it.” I felt like I needed to do more because although I had brought up 100+ people to a higher better self I was like I got 8 billion people to go.
