As a Scandinavian / Contemporary jazz lover, your style and aesthethic in teaching jazz & theory is exactly whats working for me. I'm moving to Copenhagen next year, and I hope I can listen to your great music sometime in the near future, maybe even at the Jazz Festival! Thanks!
This is the most useful you have ever done I believe. I don’t even play piano but the amount of improvement I have seen today alone is visceral. It’s still a lot to go over but my business will double at the apartments where I work as a plumber.
Lot of Teaching Stuff esp. on YT dont have my Trust. Cause they dont give me the Feel of a closed Circle. They Theach "some" Stuff but they dont realy have a bigger Concept behind. On your Channel, it feels more like a Journey or Trip with a Goal, where i can begin my own Journey to go. I feel in good hands here! No wasting Time where i leave more Confusiosd then before. Great Concept!!
Hei Oliver, hope you're doing fine. Let me tell you something. You know what? You gave me the key to the world of Music. This is only puzzle that I have been constantly working on to figure out. Your lesson matches with my own idea. Thanks a million for your kind effort to teach music the most thrilling way!
Just in time! Thank you so much, I wasn't expecting this. As always, loving your study material, your inspiring approach to music and the perfection of your video editing!
Thank you so much for this brilliant lesson. Playing by ear, I've always had to discover the more interesting modes through experimentation and linking a few together hadn't occured to me. Suddenly, creating complex sounding music doesn't seem so daunting. A priceless lesson which I am certain will have dramatic implications for my music. Truly grateful.
Ive been playin it for a fee daya now. I habe to say Finally ive found a way in which my fingers feel free in many different ways, as many as 210. Really The freedom Im feeling improvising now feela like flying.
Hi and thank you so much for your very nice comment - I'm so glad that I can help you on you musical road and re-motivate you. And thank you so much for your generous voluntary “super thanks” donation - you help keep me going for sure!!! I'm very grateful :) :) :) Best regards from Oliver
Never been this early! I’m certainly intrigued to see what you’ve got for us this time! Thank you for teaching so many people more ways to think about playing the piano and music theory in general
My English is not very good, but I want to tell you that I am very grateful for everything you do for music. I am just learning how to improvise, and I would like to know how can I determine in which position to place the pentatonic grip (the pentatonic grip that you teach in your other videos) to play the different scales I would like to use for each chord? Again, I want to repeat that I am very grateful for all that you do and that for me, you make music something more entertaining. Thanks!
Hi and thank you so much for your very nice comment and your generous voluntary “super thanks” donation - you help keep me going for sure!!! I'm very grateful :) :) :) The pentatonic hand grip only fits the 7 Modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian). In this lesson we use many other kinds of scales. But if you like doing the pentatonic hand grip just keep on evolving your Music with that grip - you don't have to know and play all scales. Simple Music is often the best Music! In this playlist I've gathered all my lessons about the pentatonic hand grip - and more will come... th-cam.com/play/PLd8gNAxPUcJyjw8L8463_koSVsPIFkWVX.html You can also check out the even more simple but very effective 3 finger hand grip in this playlist th-cam.com/play/PLd8gNAxPUcJwDXKTlsToY9Iko3azFhg7R.html Many regards from Oliver
Wow Oliver. This was released at a good time for me. I was looking for some guidance regarding scale choice. As always, it is well explained. Back to the woodshed.
Hi and thank you so much for your very nice comment and very generous voluntary “super thanks” donation - you help keep me going for sure!!! I'm very grateful :) :) :) Best regards from Oliver
i love your calm voice and this 1 is a great vid! btw is that true that every notes is capable for improvise? the more i learn about the music theories i get more confuse like there are too many scale modes and it's like just play what sound good there always be support by some kind of scale modes or something. is there anything i should learn to get it right?? (i just want some guide to learn more about theories)
Hi and thanks a lot :) Yes, we can use any tone when improvising - as we for example do in this other very practical lesson also playing over a ii-V-I progression th-cam.com/video/KqtS_Vr2rqw/w-d-xo.html In this lesson we make a systematic and structured overview of scales and families of scales if you want to learn more about theory: th-cam.com/video/Vq2xt2D3e3E/w-d-xo.html Cheers from Oliver
Dine forklaringer er så gode! ❤ Du gør det virkelig nemt at forstå og spændende og jeg elsker den visuelle æstetik med de svævende hænder (er den måske inspireret af Sigurd Barretts Bjørnetime?) 😃
What i would like to learn is, how you use the Pedal to have a clear and clean Ostinato without getting to muddy and/or to thin. I know, this is not a Piano technik Scool. But some Advise would be cool. I can not identify what you do, only by hearing the Pedal Noise ;)
Hello my dear loyal follower :) :) :) In this other lesson I explain how I use the sustain pedal. I hope you'll enjoy :) Cheers from Oliver th-cam.com/video/1KTmp-mNvzk/w-d-xo.html
@@NewJazz Thx. I know that video. In the upper Register without Bass it is quite easy and intuitive. But when whe wanna go downwards the lower Register, i dont know when i have to lift the Pedal that the Sound get not abruptly too thin, or in the other way too muddy. (Low Interval Limit) e.g Time: 07.48min in this Vid
Ahh, yes I understand. That's really hard to explain - I don't even know myself what I'm doing when being so specific haha. But I've opened the project files and made a screenshot of the recorded midi signals at the 07:48 phrase. On the top you have the notes being played, below the sustain pedal values; zero equals to pedal off, 100 is pedal on. Maybe you can use that image to find out what's going on in details and to get some ideas to work on ;) Many regard from Oliver newjazz.dk/xtra/pedal-example.png
Your Great. Very goid Idee! I am excited to look at the Grafic when i have time to sit on the Piano. Realy great idee and very gentle from you to spend one more Time for my soecial Questions. I think some of my past Teacher at Scool hated me, some resoected me.😊 Thx Oliver @@NewJazz
@@NewJazz For absolut clarity, what meens the darker regions on the Notes-Events in the Piano-Roll? It may seem that i am a bit dogged on that, but (as a "non" piano player) it is not trivial.
A Vid about the Triads would be wonderfull:) I am shure there is a Science behind..;) ioi ok, one could "check" which Triad respect the actual Chord..(?)
The most important part of this lesson is at @14:35. Despite all the theory that will help you developpe your skills, in the end there are no rules in music.
Hi :) I use this VST from Native Instruments: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/keys/the-grandeur/ The midi keyboard is a Kawai VPC1 Cheers from Oliver
All the included intervals over the dm7 and g7 are infact the same (transposed) with the exclusion of the M7 interval and over the Cmaj7 the m2 and m7 are excluded. How did you come to those rules tho and why, coz couldnt you technically use any 7 of the 11 notes at random and they would still transition smoothly on chord change?
Hi :) Yes, very well spotted, some of the scales contain the same keys. In this other lesson we learn more about families of scales th-cam.com/video/Vq2xt2D3e3E/w-d-xo.html But the idea in this lesson is to change the keys, the sound when going from one chord to the next to make the progression more 'moving'. And yes, correct, we can play any tone - as we for example do in this other lesson, playing chromatic together with arpeggios and blues scale over the ii-V-I progression. The rules are just to make a well-defined a field of study. But at the same time we extract some of the most used and common scales throughout western music history. Cheers from Oliver
Hi :) I don't think you should memorize all scales - I haven't - then I for sure get confused as well… Start out by playing just a single scale that you're fond of - simple Music is often the best Music actually.
