Hi dear fellow Musicians :) This playlist contains all lessons about the 3 left hand grips to do almost any jazz chord; th-cam.com/play/PLd8gNAxPUcJz6-veQ28QlwkB3V_68dIiL.html Enjoy :) Many regards from Oliver Prehn
Good to know my out of the box curiosity got me realizing I can use all types of expansions and alternatives with the different rootless inversions. Your video you recommended just confirmed my thoughts thank you sir.
I honestly do not understand why an individual would give this gentleman a thumbs down. If you have nothing positive to say, say nothing at all. These tutorials are not easy to make. Let alone the methods of playing the piano and teaching music theory. I am grateful for all your labor. Thank you.
The individuals { piano teachers} find it's taking away their income. However not everyone can afford piano lessons. Maybe a person wants to share what he knows before they leave the earth. You can't take knowledge with you into the grave.
Many thanks, I've been looking for "best way to learn chords piano" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Nonason Ranincoln Genie - (should be on google have a look )? It is a good one of a kind guide for discovering how to play the piano like a pro minus the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my work buddy got excellent results with it.
Agree! Such a great, down to earth style of teaching that gives almost instant results. I often keep one lesson up for a week or more and only move on when I feel I have somewhat mastered or at least internalized that part of the lesson. Really gret stuff and has helped me more than any other teacher ever. Many thanks to Oliver P. @ NewJazz.
Oliver, there are dozens of teachers for piano on TH-cam . I get bits from all of them. But you are my Key of C. I always return to you because I know that we share certain values about life and music. Your voice itself is a persuasive instrument. I have a smile when you use the word Thrilling. I need to look that up in German. I began in childhood with brass, changed to drums in my teens and now in my maturity it's all piano. I'm in love with the piano.
I'm going to a Jazz workshop- rootless.... that's a big challenge, you are the first human to practice the left hand in a real practical way with your handgrips, thanks a lot, greets from Austria!
I just love the way you say 'okay' It's like you're landing back on earth for the sake of the lesson but it feels like you'd stay playing the piano "endlessly", thanks for your passion!
Another fantastic exercise. Memorize this and you have SO much. Also, the more of these you do, the more the "fooling around" time is great -- it becomes easier and easier to play things that sound good.
Wow! What can I say? Oliver, you are an amazing teacher! I have wanted to understand and learn the jazz chords for so many years but was always overwhelmed by traditional teachers. Your pedagogical method is the best I have ever experienced. I've learned more from just two of your lessons than all the years of frustrated grinding with others. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I hope there’s no limit to how often one can compliment. Mr. Phren has the best course on U-Tube. This brother is 100% Kool! You’ve got me hypnotized man. as a vocalist, this is the type of study I longed for. My goal is to accompany myself.
This is just amazing stuff. Thank you SO much. For decades I had thought I just didn't practice enough to have all these songs in my head. Now that I am finally learning how to make music MYSELF, I realize it's about learning the language, not just stringing words together. Absolutely fascinating. WHY!!!???? is music not always taught this way?
wow I always wanted to sound like that! I've spent 30 years postponing understanding the wonderful world of Jazz and finally I start in such a pleasant, practical and satisfying way, thanks Oliver your human quality is perceived and your gift of teacher is the best, I will follow you until the end of the world. I can not believe that your lessons are free, I really admire your dedication, I will share with all my friends from the musical world, greetings from Guatemala
Shit dude, you just voiced almost THE EXACT SAME THING, except I've been playing music in one form or another-usually rock/pop, and on the guitar-for forty years! but it's only in the last year or so that I've been trying to umm, play, um *cocktail music* (because at 60 I will never be able to play real jazz on the piano!) so the learning curve has been incredibly steep. It doesn't matter that I know the theory behind the music-it's getting my fingers to do the walking that's the hard part. And since TH-cam has become such an excellent source of knowledge-depending MUCHLY on where you get it-it has now become possible to have it be your teacher. So far, though, I've found mostly horribly recorded amateurish productions, where the pianist will place his regrettably bad microphone somewhere in the room, aim the camera somewhere at the random keyboard and then spend 90% of the video (I kid you not-that would be MOST of the instructional videos on YT) talking. This nice Scandinavian gentleman has not only graced us with an incredible rich baritone but also an expertly placed mike, with excellent stereo sound on headphones (always a consideration in a household where not everyone wants to learn jazz piano), brilliant and easy-to-read graphics-extremely well done, I might even say professionally done-and that hypnotic voice. I don't know if my fingers will do what I tell them but I'm sure going to have fun trying, right here on this channel!
Professor Oliver Prehn, greetings from the island of Puerto Rico, sincerely you are the best teacher of you tube and also, your methods, teaching and your appreciated time and teaching time of 15 or 20min and more of each tutorial are incomparable. I am learning a lot with you, thank you I give God for that gift of teaching and transmitting difficult knowledge and seeing it as simple, even more so when many of us do not have the financial resources to pay a Teacher with knowledge, experience and professionalism like you. To God, in the name of Jesus, Bless you in everything and reward you for that good work, keep going that we are more than those who thank you than those who criticize you, thank you God Bless you.
Oliver!! You have changed my musical life forever in two short weeks! You are a beyond amazing teacher! I have since I found your channel only two weeks ago adopted several new habits, programmed all the pentatonic minor scales and can already switch between them quite well. I am tapping constantly and have spent several hours a day at my keyboard practicing all types of your wonderful stuff and have just begun. Learning this stuff has been a long time dream but I never knew who to ask and WHAT to ask about. Your lessons are uncovering principles that I have been unaware of for years. Mind you I have made a living thru music since the late 80's, "hustling" my keyboard playing when writting stuff. My Dad was a jazz head galore and I grew up hearing all the greats so to improve my ability to improvise has long been highest on my list of musical wishes. Finding your channel has shown me that there is still a chance for me to, with a ton of effort improve vastly. Your techniques have proved incredibly inspirational to me and are showing results really quickly. It is to me (at least) even massive fun to practice Thank You to No End Brother!!!!!
Even though this is a twenty-minutes video It must have taken hours to make. The teaching tech and tools are superb with a bonus of pdf. You are the best.
Thank you very much, Oliver. I see a lot of your followers are old/middle-aged people in whom you have inspired renewed enthusiasm for jazz piano through your beautiful, top-quality videos. Having found you in my mid-twenties, I think I'm incredibly lucky that I get to start out on my musical journey armed with the best jazz piano lessons on the Internet. My, you are a find! And your baritone introduction always reminds me to like your videos before I begin watching them haha (also because I know I'm about to expand my mind incredibly in the next 20 minutes). I have a feeling I will remember these lessons for many, many years to come, and I am infinitely grateful to you. I hope that I soon earn enough money to become a patron. Till then, you have all my love, all my likes, and this comment that affirms that you, sir, are THE BEST! Love from India :)
Thank you so much!!! And you don’t have to donate anything - a really nice comment and feedback like yours is all the support I need :) Warm regards from Oliver
What I love about your videos is I always have that light-bulb moment where my mind goes "ah ha!" and it is so enjoyable. Thank you for sharing your talents with us, I've learned so much in a short amount of time.
This was great, been searching for "common piano chords" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Nonason Ranincoln Genie - (search on google )? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering how to play the piano like a pro without the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my m8 got amazing results with it.
Your exercises are practical and caters to different levels of learners from beginner to intermediate.. and I love your voice and style of explanation.. greetings from India🇮🇳
Coming back! I learned to sing two songs by Sophie Hunger (not really Jazz) while comping myself. Tacklimg some standards now. I miss a bass player :) but thanks to you I got to reduce complexity while not even giving up on the 5th and even be able to the "one size fits all" 9th! Just what I needed! Three years! Yay! Still alive :)
Out of my toolbox I come with 2 formulas for the minor 7 (9) chord : 1 b7 9 b3 5 and 1 b3 5 b7 9 . Thank you so for clearing the clouds of overwhelming ness. New Jazz gives honour to its name.
I’m so very grateful for your colourfully insightful musical talent, jazz piano is completely new to me, and you’re such a gift to us all, your persona, teaching methods, presentation techniques and your voice sets you apart from everyone else. Bravo...Thank you 👍🏼
Really awesome !! Your lessons made me remove dust from my piano and play again!!! I was bored playing regular Major and minor chord... And... as I'am french I'll say it in french New Jazz est un site absolument génial pour démystifier et rendre le jazz mais pas seulement ... accessible et ""presque"" facile Bravo et merci Oliver !
Oliver, your lessons are just amazing !! As a teenager I played synthesizer. 25 years ago I bought a digital piano and practiced classical works. I have never really had piano lessons so I am a little self-taught. Sometimes I did my own improvisations. I have hardly played in the last 10 years. Recently I started playing the piano again, but I soon got tired of it. Until I came across your videos on TH-cam. Man, this is really great. I thought about learning to play jazz for a while. Thanks to your videos, I am motivated to play the piano again. Yes, I really want to learn to play jazz on the piano! Jazz is so relaxing and fun to listen to. I no longer want to play the melancholy and depressing works of the past. Jazz piano is a new world that has opened up for me. And I have now found the right channel here on TH-cam. It will not be easy but I am motivated! Really thanks !! Greetings from Belgium. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 And the PDFs are so helpful. This channel is like a gift from God to me. Thanks thanks thanks !!!!
these are the best i have come across and you offer them for free. what a great thing ! ive been a drummer my entire life but now and starting to become dangerous on the piano as well... thanks to these videos . thank you !!!
I love your style of teaching. It has helped me break free of the rigid bounds of my classical music education and focus more on improv and feeling free when I play. How I practice my chords: First, practice the descending grips hands together. Once it is smooth, practice with chords in the left hand and bass in the right hand, and then with chords in the right hand and bass in the left hand. Say them out loud!
Every time I see new lessons, I think ... great, this is the best lesson he ever made... all the time. ... until the next. just I have no time to practice so ... I'm just practicing my mind. Not so bad!
As we know from modes, simply starting on a different note is what colors the perception of the exact same notes. In this way you have shifted my perspective on what was there all along, which has opened new doors!
Thank you again! It took me about 3 days on and off watching this video where I finally got a good understanding. I almost gave up a few times and took a lot of breaks but I got it! I really appreciate all of your videos, I've learned a ton over the last year and a half since I discovered your channel.
About a year ago I had a serious right arm accident. I follow your courses carefully and I would like to start playing well with the right hand as well. Meanwhile, I start again with your left hand exercises. Playing is beautiful. I hope I can fully recover my right limb and still play as before! Whoever has two working hands has great luck without knowing it! Thank you for your contribution!
This lesson is just what I needed. Thank you so much Oliver. I especially like that you take your time to put out high quality videos and not just putting out a bunch of videos for the sake of putting out a bunch of videos. I will donate to your channel sometime in the near future.
Oliver, you are simply the best! You are very repetitive in your teaching and that is a very good thing. I also like how your theoretical approach is broken down behind the practical working examples. Keep these lessons coming and keep up the good work. thanks so much.
Thank you so much for sharing your smile and your videos! As a dyslexic on notes (as I would call myself), I searched for piano lessons without sheet music for decades. Your videos are a very instructive and practicable way to learn improvisation and are exactly what I was looking for. Thank you again and please keep sharing your enthusiasm, skills and your smile! :-)
I can't wait to get home and work on this exercise! Even without watching the future videos, I know that I'll be able to easily adapt this to major 7, dominant 7, minor major 7th chords and more by just changing the 3rd and 7th.
I’ve been working on re-learning piano after playing professional non-jazz piano in my youth and then taking a 15-year break from serious practicing/playing. And I’ve watched a ton of online tutorials lately. Where have you been??? So glad I found you and your approach to theory. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!!
Thanks man. I'm always enjoying your videos. I go back and forth on TH-cam learning from some great teachers. YOUR one of my favorites. Top 5 for sure thanks for what you do.
Thank you so much. Your lessons are suitable for every instrument that could play a melody. I play trombone and will definitely prefer a you as a lecturer above everyone I've heard to date.
Apart from your wonderful explanations, I really like your mellow presentation and musical voice. That makes it so much easier to follow and keep listening. Thank you so much!
Wow, this is wonderful stuff. I have all this music theory in my head but seeing it played right in front of me is a revelation to say the least. My head is exploding right now. Thank you🎹👍👍👍🙏🙏
I am working diligently on this. I always find it best to try to make an exercise musical. So I hit Amin7 and play a very simple lick with just the b7, 1, 2 and b3. Then I hit Dmin7 and play the same lick in Dmin. Back to Amin7 and repeat, then Dmin7 and repeat. Now, down to Gmin7 and Cmin7 and do the same thing again, and so on. Then start the whole thing over, but with a new, still very simple lick. It keeps the exercise feeling musical for me, and I have learned that this is what keeps me planted and practicing.
I use these chords all of the time playing my Hammond B3 I just never knew the names of them. I am using them in my right hand most of the time. My left hand chording is fairly weak. Great job breaking the theory down. I will absolutely use your exercises to enhance my organ playing. You definitely have a new subscriber here!
This was a little over my abilities a couple of months ago. Now I understand and know my cords, which I didn't really know months ago. This is a great lesson. When I master this I will move to another of your videos. Thank you.
Amazing as always, thanks for changing the way I learn and enjoy music! Some things that helped me as a beginner: 1. First, I got a feel of the minor/major third intervals by playing them in every position, until I can play them without thinking 2. I found it easier to reason about Grip 1a (ma3-mi3-ma3) as thinking of it as a relative major chord (ma3+mi3) with an added third (maj7 chord). Currently focusing on practicing the exercises, hoping for some more a-ha moments 😀
You know, the funny thing is, that as I am following along this lesson, I had almost forgotten that I had a different objective when I got into the video. I came here because I wanted to play some 7th chords. Just so I could play the chords to a certain song. So as the lesson began, we learned to build the Ebm7 chord. Right? And the funny thing is. He seems to (correct me if I am wrong) teach us the intervals for a RootMaj7 chord, and its 2nd inversion, so that we can learn how to play RootMin7 chords. How amazing is this. I came for one thing, and I get so much more than I could've hoped to learn. Thank you so much sir! Legend! Preciate it so much. Will recommend you. For sure.
Hi Oliver, great lesson especially that you start on a minor chord quality and with two inversions plus the add notes. That covers so much what many people - not only beginners - consider as too difficult. I think this lesson will be a great help for some to put away their "fear" of these chord drills. I very appreciate your way of explaining and doing musical things. Cheers.
Thank you very much Oliver. Your lessons, both the content and the way in which you present the content, is just perfect for what I wish to achieve in my re-invigorating my piano playing.
Quick question: When I free play, I play chords and melody in the right hand... My brain seems to "learn" better when I play chords in the right hand. Would it be reasonable to learn the shapes and progressions using the right hand first, then mixing and matching the left as a separate process? Or is there a downside to this approach? Many thanks. Rick
You can indeed play the chords with the right hand as well. And I think it's a very good idea to start where you are best. No downsides 😉 I totally forgot to say that this is for the right hand as well in the video - totally focused on the left hand. Thank you so much for bringing this up. Best regards Oliver
Dear sir..Thank u so much for sharing ur knowledge. Your lessons are just fabulous and the way u speak while teaching is fantastic.. I have been dwelling on this lesson left hand grip 1 and learning it and really excited.. Thanku so much
Think this is my favorite lesson, the chords and progression sound advanced, heard this kind of stuff in different songs before, love thes kind of chords.
Hi Oliver. I always enjoy the style with which you present your lessons. Breaking down the math to it’s simplest form is a technique most teachers never attain and your method is amongst the best I’ve seen. One observation if I may...when we are descending (moving anti-clockwise) around the circle, I feel it would be more accurate (and less confusing) to state we are moving through a cycle of descending fourths. And in contrary motion, ascending (moving clockwise) up through a cycle of fifths. A small but important differentiation for the beginner. Please keep up your hard work. Your lessons are cherished.
Echoing many sentiments here want to thank you for your lesson(s), I have watched a couple of others wasn't really getting them because I was not listening.. New to music, four years in, no consistent teacher, TH-cam has become that which can be both good and bad. Bad if the person can't express for newbies in terms the music language and good if the newbie find and follow one or two persons for some time. I'm 54 yrs old and want to be part of the music universe for the next fifty...damn i'll be 104years then ...just a baby (newbie) still.
Congratulations!
luckily I have an application that translates everything you say .. it was a fantastic lesson .. clear precise and above all simple .. but this lesson is very effective. thanks kiss from Italy
Oliver, you are the best 😊 the way you have explained many complicated concepts with so much of clarity n making it very easy to understand...will be always grateful to you for all your lessons...Lots of love from India ❤️🤗

I believe even thumbs down are used by TH-cam as a measure of people's interest in the video. Negative attention is still attention.

Awesome feeling when I learned more on Oliver's channel than in 7 years of music school...)))
What I love about your videos is I always have that light-bulb moment where my mind goes "ah ha!" and it is so enjoyable. Thank you for sharing your talents with us, I've learned so much in a short amount of time.

Thank you so much. I'm really glad that I can help you with Music!!! Warm regards from Oliver
these are the best i have come across and you offer them for free. what a great thing ! ive been a drummer my entire life but now and starting to become dangerous on the piano as well... thanks to these videos . thank you !!!
Great lesson on rootless voicings! I've been struggling with these one-hand A-B voicings for a while, and I look forward to seeing lesson 2!
Hi :) I really hope that you recover. And thanks a lot for your nice message :) Warm regards from Oliver
Glad I found you Oliver. This is the stuff I have never been able to understand. You have made it easy and fun. Thank you
I love the teaching methods, techniques and voice narration of this guy..!! Absolute Genius !
I am always too enthusiastic not to leave a thank you Oliver note. Wonderful human being you are. Much love! :)
This lesson is just what I needed. Thank you so much Oliver. I especially like that you take your time to put out high quality videos and not just putting out a bunch of videos for the sake of putting out a bunch of videos. I will donate to your channel sometime in the near future.
Thanks a lot and I really appreciate your patience!!! Best and warm regards Oliver
This the most complete and practical education for substantial growth and development I have encountered. You are a Godsend sir!
This is just so cool!!! I'm just starting to practice my left hand jazz chords and this is perfect! You are the best, Oliver!
I love it when you tell me not to despair because trying to understand jazz techniques often makes me despair. I feel so seen
Wow you really brought it down to essence. ... and finally *opened the gates* for me into Jazz piano.
Thank ya so much.
Sounds like a GREAT approach!!!
i arrived at this exercise on my own, so seeing it here makes me feel so vindicated :) love this channel!
same here! thanks Dr. Prehn!
Another beautifully explained lesson. Thank you for sharing the knowledge 👍
I subscribe to your channel and you've really opened my eyes and ears. You're a wonderful teacher. Thanks so much for these generous lessons Oliver!
You're a very gifted teach Oliver, every video is so much fun to watch. Wishing you all the best from Aus.
Jorge Ponticas. Excellent explanation. Great graphics and exercises to learn and master these chord progressions. You got it, man.
So glad to see/hear you again!
This was a little over my abilities a couple of months ago. Now I understand and know my cords, which I didn't really know months ago. This is a great lesson. When I master this I will move to another of your videos. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial, kudos,
running thru all the tonalities thru the circle of 5ths, one of my favorite methods of practice.
This is fantastic. I am so enjoying these videos, which I only discovered a month ago. So incredibly practical and useful.
Your lessons are amazingly valuable to me, you have no idea. Thanks so much.
gratitude exercised onwards...this is simply endorsing souls...much appreciated, obliged and on
Quarantine brought me here. Thank you New Jazz!
Amazing as always, thanks for changing the way I learn and enjoy music! Some things that helped me as a beginner:
1. First, I got a feel of the minor/major third intervals by playing them in every position, until I can play them without thinking
2. I found it easier to reason about Grip 1a (ma3-mi3-ma3) as thinking of it as a relative major chord (ma3+mi3) with an added third (maj7 chord).
Currently focusing on practicing the exercises, hoping for some more a-ha moments 😀
I think your lessons are amazing I love how you deliver your tutorials thank you.
For sure.
E flat Maj 7. Whoops. Also, I think I should omit the M and just keep Eb7
Great job, Oliver. It makes you want to get directly behind the keyboard. Thank you very much. And see you soon!
the magic of the music... i really aprecciate this lesson...very good and thank you
Beautiful exercise. I could do this all day. Thank you.
I’m really grateful for these lessons.
You are so masterful in sharing the light of insight and ability os beautifully, thank you. I am now a student of grateful attention!
What an enlightening lesson! Thank you so much for your awesome teaching of the piano.
Hi Oliver,
great lesson especially that you start on a minor chord quality and with two inversions plus the add notes. That covers so much what many people - not only beginners - consider as too difficult. I think this lesson will be a great help for some to put away their "fear" of these chord drills. I very appreciate your way of explaining and doing musical things. Cheers.
Thanks so much :)
Superb instruction on a troublesome concept! Much clearer now. THANK YOU!
Thank you very much Oliver.
Your lessons, both the content and the way in which you present the content, is just perfect for what I wish to achieve in my re-invigorating my piano playing.
And thank you so much for the very generous donation I just got - I believe it's from you ;) You keep me going :) Warm regards Oliver
'tis only fair
Quick question:
When I free play, I play chords and melody in the right hand...
Thanku so much
Great again. Thank you very much, Oliver. I really appreciate your generosity
This is really fascinating! I have to wonder how many jazz tunes I've listened containing this very pattern
Great Class!!! You have a very clear voice to teach
Все ваши уроки это россыпи бриллиантов!
Another great lesson from a great teacher. Thank you so much for sharing. Regards from Panama.
Thanks so much Mr Oliver for your lesson learned
I really want to thank you for this, its an eye opener for me
Thank you Oliver! Another great lesson exploring the beauty behind the left hand chords. Keep on revealing the secrets :)
Echoing many sentiments here want to thank you for your lesson(s), I have watched a couple of others wasn't really getting them because I was not listening.. New to music, four years in,
no consistent teacher, TH-cam has become that which can be both good and bad. Bad if the person can't express for newbies in terms the music language and good if the newbie find and follow one or two persons for some time. I'm 54 yrs old and want to be part of the music universe for the next fifty...damn i'll be 104years then ...just a baby (newbie) still.
Gracias Oliver.
Congratulations!
Thanks for your time and effort. really appreciated Oliver!!
Great stuff, thanks, gives me a lot of motivation to practice, looking forward your next lesson
Ti ringrazio con tutto il cuore sei meraviglioso, spieghi in modo eccezionale e allo stesso tempo semplice e diretto.. Sei il TOP!!
