The RKO Story - Howard's Way

- The story of how RKO declined when it was bought by Howard Hughes, including many, many stories of him treating actresses as property, and a plot by Stewart Granger to murder Hughes because of his predatory behaviour with women. 7th August 1987.
Russell was called cranky because she called out sexual harassment and wouldn't sleep with anyone but her husband.
Interesting insight. I always see her as plain, unattractive, even cheap and whorish. She danced and moved with the grace of an earthbound sloth. Thanks for your correction.

I never thought that she was beautiful, especially next to Marilyn Monroe.
This is a hit piece on Hughes. He is not here to give his side of the story. The part they don't tell you is that all the women who worked for him were paid handsomely. Hughes was eccentric and very insecure but he was an absolute saint compared to the other studio bosses, Meyer, Cohn, etc.. Howard Hughes was a flawed but a great man..
@lsimon I think you may be missing one of the key points of this program, which is that a lot of people DID NOT respect Howard Hughes. However innovative he was in aviation, he was incompetent as a studio boss. He also relentlessly harassed actresses and abused his power to sabotage their careers if he was rejected.
Your post is right; this series was produced for mainstream consumption, which means it has been whitewashed and stripped of the real truth for the masses.
We need to be more observant and analytical rather than go from rumors from over half a century ago...
@@Steve-hd6qk Huh? It’s an established fact that he ran RKO into the ground, and there are numerous first-hand accounts of him trying to use his influence to take advantage of actresses. Janet Leigh, Jane Greer and Ruth Warrick talk about it in the video.
Thank you for this insight, on all fronts. :-)
Anyone who truly knows Howard would have the respect to NOT call the Hercules the “ Spruce Goose” Howard HATED that name snd it was dismissive to his incredible plane which would inspire the B 52 and jumbo jets. Howard was a true innovator. Too bad OCD robbed him of his later years BUT LOOK AT WHAT HE ACCOMPLISHED ANYWAY!
What did Hughes accomplish as a studio owner? Putting it bluntly, RKO was probably the most mis-managed studio in Hollywood. And, that was prior to Hughes buying RKO. After that? Hughes drove RKO out of business.

well said.... i agree with you.
As usual tax payers always prompt to help that "genius". Pleeeease...🧐
Very true!
I think he’s very admirable and respectable!
He’s a great man.
I think he has a sensitive and good heart, too, through his stories I’ve read,
though, not very much, my english’s not good, but he gave me the image.
Hughs didn’t trust anyone, smart guy 👍
Only trusted his CIA handler lol
In the glory days of Hollywood, the Majors and the mini-majors we're determined as to whether they owned theaters chains to exhibit their films. "The Big Five'' studios, which owned the theaters, were MGM, Warners, Paramount, Fox and RKO while the ''Little Three,'' which did not own theaters, were Columbia, Universal and United Artists. With the exceptions of MGM and Columbia, the other studios all had some moments where dodged bankruptcy. However, RKO was the most egregious. It was consistently the most mis-managed of all the studios, changing it's image and it's style. And, it wasn't just Hughes, although he put the final nail in the coffin. "The RKO Story''does a good job of explaining how chaotic mis-management can destroy a company.
That, AND signing box office poison, Katharine Hepburn, as your main star, who can't act her way out of a paper bag. Everything she ever did was HER playing HERSELF, and she was full of herself and closeted. I'd have a modicum of respect for her if she were truthful, but she couldn't even meet that low bar. Hughes and Hepburn, lol. Howard was brilliant; he just needed others to handle the details of his visionary talent.
That painting that guy did he looks like Sean Connery,
Many Years Ago I Had The Opportunity To Go Inside The “Spruce Goose “. Sorry Howard. My Ex Wife & I Were In LA for a Business Meeting. Inside the Goose was Very Interesting but We Couldn’t Go into the Wings. I remember Thinking That I Was Sitting In The Same Seat As Hughes when he Flew the Ship . I was thrilled.
Are all the episodes available, please?
Someone who also has OCD i can identify with Mr. Hughs.
If that is her voice, Jane was a decent singer.
That was her voice. Have you ever had a chance to see her in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)? You can probably find a copy through your public library.
ACC TO AVA S AUTOBIO, Howard smelled so bad she never wanted to have it off with him, since he never showered nor bathed. What a genius. Jean Peters didn t mind ...
There is little evidence Peters ever slept with him, or even lived with him. They led separate lives. Wouldn't you?
@@LaurenceDay-d2p DON T SHOOT THE PIANIST, nor the messenger. Ava done implied what she inferred ...She was a wild one, maintained the facade, lived hard, exited @ 67. Doubt she wouldn t libel on anyone. Kitty had impeccable class.
Good for the actresses that stood up to him!
Yea right, BS
@@catman8670 Why would you say that ?
@@ricardocantoral7672 Stupidity and misogyny are my guesses.

HOLLYWEIRD!!!!
And it's only going weirder during the years
Ah, the "Hollywood Golden Age", lol, when, if you were a woman, you were liable to be treated like a streetwalker, accomplishments be damned, husband and kids be damned. Hughes was merely the worst of a bad bunch, his pathetic horniness merely more prominent.
he was brillant!!
Soundtrack lags the picture by more than a full minute about a third of the way in until the end. Too bad.
Sound is fine with me... you might wanna check your computer, you might need a faster processor or more ram...
My goodness, but Jane Russell is cranky.
If you'd gone for Betamax they'd have been higher quality man.
He was obsessed with Jane Russell and low cut women's dresses, how's a man,he liked women,
His bosom fetishism was a sign of his arrested development and immaturity.
