How to diagnose the cause of your flat tire on your bicycle

  • There are 4 major types of flats you can experience when using inner tube style bicycle wheels. These are the same for top end clinchers as well as big box kids bikes.
    1. Puncture
    2. Rim strip failure
    3. Pressure failure (long rip from tube creep from improper installation or from tire sidewall or bead failure)
    4. Pinch flat (snakebite)
    The video covers why we line the label of the tire up with the valve as well.

    Mate, you and I are the only ones that know that you need to know the relationship of the tyre and tube to find the area to look for the cause. All the others I have seen just scoot a hand round inside, that does not work is the cause retreats into the rubber with no weight applied. Fair enough with the label, but most tyres have a white spot on the wall, balance spot we always called it. That may not be so, but if when fitting the tyre the spot is situated at the valve, you have a very small area to inspect if you do get a flat. That aside excellent video old mate.

    Never had a snake bite like that, I've only had them on one side of the rim where the tube pinched between rim and tire putting a hole on the inside and outside of tube. What you describe, you'd have 4 holes. Good tips! Nice video.

    Today I got a 3rd puncture in as many rides, with the last repair done at the shop. I watched this video on the road before trying to fix it yet again, and Using the valve/tire marking trick I found a very small thorn or point on the inside of the tire! The video was immediately useful and it saved my ride, as I would have got another puncture 10-15k down the road.

    • @amsdam
      @amsdam 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jordan Barclay a very small thorn or needle was protruding from the inside of the tire. I could only feel it with my fingertip and nail, it wasn’t visible at all. So the new tubes I installed were fine for 30-50 kms before the thorn/needle would make a very slow puncture.

    • @unclefester610
      @unclefester610 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amsdam a neat trick around that problem is to always mount your tube and tire the exact same way around. Line up your valve with your pressure rating on your tire. That way if you keep getting flats in the exact same spot, you'll know you missed something sharp there.

      @@amsdam Aircraft Carrier based planes land so hard the tires can spin on the rims. They paint a red hash mark on the tire right at the valve so they can tell at a glance if the tire has moved and might be in danger of tearing the valve. I've used my sisters nail polish to mark my tire and valves so I can line them up easily when fixing a flat. I won't replace a tire after a flat without finding the thorn and removing it.

    Very nice video. Just had a shop install used extra strong touring wheels in the front and rear of my mountain bike because I weigh 276. I rode about 12 miles on city streets and on a brand new paved bike path, no bumps to cause a pinch flat, also hit no pot holes. Also the tires were aired up to capacity, very hard, seemed to full 65lbs, very nice Schwable Marathon plus 2.0 x 26 mountain bike (for city street type of tread) so plenty of air and VG condition tires I bought online. I had about 50lbs of groceries in rear side bags. Once I was home I entered my apartment bldg, took the elevator, tires still fine, opened my apt door, put side bags in the hall and just then a distinct hissing started. I could see from some rain water, bubbles and air coming out fast around the base of the presta valve on my rear tire (also brand new tubes the shop installed) and in about 15 seconds my tire was completely flat. Also I had a chance to take the presta valve cap off to be sure no air was escaping the valve, so the valve is okay.
    I emailed the shop and they said it was a "pinch flat" and to bring it in tomorrow and for no fee they will fix it. Reading what pinch flats are and your description... I never hit any hard holes, rocks, or anything hard. I looked all over the outside of the tire and see nothing sticking in it. Also my tires were fully inflated the whole trip. I'm wondering if they might have sold me a used problematic wheel, that there's a sharp barb or something around the valve stem hole. Why would my tire go flat that way? I feel kind of irritated but haven't complained. One thing that makes me nervous with that shop is I had quick release tires before and the shop put in one bolt on wheel and never asked me first, plus they told me that they normally don't show the customers the parts, meaning the wheels he said he was going to install. He made it sound like he was doing an exception for me to see the rear wheel. He said he hadn't found the front tire yet, but I wonder... It was kind of a red flag to me, yet I went ahead with the purchase and some other minor things costing 332 us dollars in the end. Should I worry, or should I, "don't worry be happy" like the old Reggae song ha! It does bother me though. What does anyone think happened? Thanks for the nice video!

      It may be the same problem I am having... tears as the tube pulls away from the valve stem area... I keep getting holes/ tears in this same spot... at the edge of the valve stem rubber... some kind of pulling is happening. Probably poor tube manufacture... I had kenda tires/ tubes for the first few years without a single problem... Some bike shops are shady, I have found, & without morals. Find a good bike shop, where the employees actually have good moral standards, & high life standards, as human beings (& not just as a bike shop), & you will have found your best shop. Such people are more the exception & rare, than the rule, it seems, in our world today. Without that life outlook/ principled foundation, it appears their temptation is too great to cheat & rip off & do wrong. The crap you have been told about not being shown parts definitely is a red flag, from your inner wisdom. Blessings.

    I had this flat problem for months now, all the while I thought because I was buying cheap inner tube (around a dollar US when converted) it will usually last a week or so and straight line puncture would appear in the inner lining of the tube, until recently when I have to enough time to investigate, it turns out the stock rim is laid with electrical tape (not proper rim tape) and it accumulated some very fine grain of sand that eventually rule out the culprit of the flat problem.

I hadn't checked my inflation pressure for about 2 weeks and went over a pot holed road when it happened. Is this a kind of pinch flat? It was only a single split.

    Thanks for the video, I like the way you explain, I have had a flat tire twice, the damage on the tube has been right next to the valve, I checked the rim and it does not have noticeable sharp edges. What do you recommend me to do?

    • @PSIMET
      @PSIMET  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Look at exactly where it is and what it comes into contact with. You say you check the rim so you think the tube is in contact with the rim where the hole is. Without holding it in my hand to tell you what caused it I would venture to guess you need to replace your rim tape. Make sure the rim has no flaws. Go over the tire carefully. There are many times I have found a tire to look fine but actually have dry rot or a small crack in the sidewall that will be enough to allow the tube to push through under pressure but without pressure - it is impossible to see. If you still can't figure it out then new rim tape, new tube, new tire (or swap the front and rear). If you start having flats on the other wheel then it was your tire.
      The big unknown in all of this is I have no idea how you are at mounting your tires. I have seen customers swear they do everything right yet always end up with flats only to have me swap it and everything be fine. Some of it is technique if you are using a tire lever. Best of luck.

      The same thing keeps happening to me... the tube is being pulled from the valve, creating a tear... Maybe sudden pressure, like a bump or pothole... Or maybe manufacturer defects of thin rubber where the valve stem thick rubber meets the thin wall rubber. I have had this happen more times than I can count, & tried everything & I am a fairly thin person, & I am convinced it is the tube manufacturing. I'd try different tube brands. When I first got my bike, I had kenda tires, with kenda tubes, without a flat for 3 years. I am wondering about maybe adding a small preventative patch at that tear spot? .. but not sure. Blessings.

    Hi I live in Florida, have Bontrager LT3 Hybrid Tire 700x38c on my Bontrager AT-650 disc rim . Max tire pressure tire can be set at is 80psi. Haven't used bike since 2016, and stored bike in my shed outside. Yesterday put air in the back tire, and it held. However the aforementioned front tire (the tube inside tire) took air but deflated after a minute or so. I removed rim/tire off bike and took it to a repair shop. Repair shop inspected and said I need a new tube. He replaced the tube, told me he pressurized tire to 70psi since 80psi was the max. Walked out of repiar shop with tire fixed and ready to go. Got home, Bike was turned upside down sitting on floor on its handlebars and seat. I placed the repaired tire/rim on bike locked it in, and left bike in upside down position sitting on its handle bars and seat. I did not ride the bike nor flip the bike right side up to put any pressure on the fixed/repaired tire. Tire was suspended the whole time. At 3:30am in the morning while sleeping I was woken up by a very very very load BOOM. I thought someone was breaking into the house. Trying too figure out where the boom came from, I squeezed the front tire just to check, and found the tire that repaired by repair shop was flat. So the boom heard was the tire exploding. Woke up arount 10:00am and went back to the bike repair shop and told them what happened. They inspected the tire, and bike tech said, "ohhh i didn't see your tire had a hole in it when i installed the new tube. Bike tech indicated: "this is why your tire exploded." Now no weight was put on that tire because bike was sitting upside down on its handlebars and seat. My question is how could the tire explode? Expecially if they installed a new tube inside tire and pressurized tire to 70psi, and tire received no human weight on it, nor bike weight because bike was turned upside down the whole time. i am thinking there was never a hole in my tire to start, I think the hole in the tire was created by the new tube in my tire that exploded. Would appreciate some feedback from the experts that can gather reason what caused the tire to explode on its own.

      I already knew the answer before I was even half way through. Your tire failed. Tires fail. They don’t have to have weight on them, as you seem to keep mentioning, in order to fail. Tires fail for all sorts of reasons. Dry rot or being stored in hot places without use is one way to accelerate the wear.
      There may not have been a hole in the sidewall when the shop replaced the tube. It can fail just simply because it’s sitting with pressure on it. The cords and casing construction just fails.
      Ever find an old rubber band sitting around? You pull on it and all of a sudden it just breaks? It didn’t do that when it was new. It may not even be old but it is dried out enough to fail under load. That is what happened to you.
      Not an industry conspiracy - you just need a new tire. Get a quality one and ride it and the odds of it dry rotting will go down substantially.

    My cause was not covered by any 4 items mentioned. I keep getting flats due to a rip/ tear in the tube right at the edge of the rounded rectangle rubber piece that supports the valve stem & sits inside the tube...this thick rubber pieces is basically the valve support, & it is the piece of rubber that connects the value to the tube. I have gotten many flats in this same spot every time. I've asked bike mechanics, & they say do not yank on the valve stem when adding air. I have been careful about that, but this care has also not solved the problem. Reasoning it out tells me there is some kind of pull of the tube away from the valve stem point, & somehow this is the weak point where a tear hole will occur when pulled. The question is, what do you do to stop this pull of the tube?? I inflate to recommended pressure. I was hoping this would be addressed, as I have heard of other people having the same problem.

This is protective. Sometimes tubes are defective in this area however, so it could be bad tubes. I always inflate new tubes to max & let them sit for a few days, to test them.

    What kind of vibration IN the apt in the floor would cause flat tire on bicycle?? Please tell me all your ideas

    • @PSIMET
      @PSIMET  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe I don't understand your question but a vibration in a floor won't cause a tire to go flat. If you are finding your tires are flat when storing them in your apartment for longer periods of time it's because tires lose air over time. If you pump them up and they hold pressure then you are good to go. You should pump your tires up every time you ride. These are not like car tires that can maintain their pressure over long periods of time. A bicycle tire's volume is so small that even small losses of air (that happens normally through the walls of the innertube over time) will result in a large pressure drop.

    I have a problem. I ride an mtb 27.5 the problem is: my inner tubes valve keeps getting damaged where the base of the valve is where the metal meets the rubber. It’s a presta valve. I’ve replaced the inner tube four times and I’m not riding more than three blocks when my tire gets a flat and its the same type of damage. Do you know what may be causing this?. The hole in the rim where the valve goes through doesn’t hace any sharp edges where it can cause any damage. I notices the the protective tape does slide to where the tape valve hole dis aligns with the rims valve hole. Is the movement force of the tape strong enough to where it can cut the valve stem? What’s causing all of this? What’s your advise? I wanna go tubeless but I want to wear down the tires I hace right now. Please help.

      @PSIMET  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      carlos alvarez there’s a lot of factors here. First the obvious question for me is whether the rim is really a presta valve rim and not a schrader one. You may laugh but I have seen it happen. As long as the hole isn’t too large then you have to look at the valve and see exactly where the holes or cuts develop. Then you have to cover that area. Also there are times when some tubes have flaws right in that area. If you are pulling the same type of tube from the same batch then this is a possibility. You can always put a little more rim tape of almost any type right Over that hole and make a new hole in the tape for your valve to go through in order to make sure the tape is up to the valve and tight.

    • @carlingas666
      @carlingas666 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      PSIMET thanks for the reply. Yes the rim is for a presta valve. Like I said, the tape that protects the inner tube in noticed it was moving while I was riding causing a dis alignment. I don’t know if that tape is sharp enough or strong enough to cause this problem. I asked my bike mechanic and he actually told me that the tire was dry at where the tire’s edge sits on the rim and inflated with pressure ridding the bike like that, when braking or starting to peddle , the force caused the tire to move independently from the rim with the inner tube tearing the valve. And that this problem isn’t fixable. He basically said I needed another tire. Is this true? Can you confirm this is plausible?

    • @PSIMET
      @PSIMET  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carlingas666 It is absolutely possible for the sidewall of the tire near the valve to have an issue and require the replacement of the tire. BUT - have all the tubes had the failure int he same exact place? Has the tire been rotated to a different position on the rim during any of these changes and has the flat defect followed the tire position? If not then it's not your cause. If you're not sure then put in a new tube and mark the tire position and rotate it to a different position. If the next flat is the same as the previous ones and it doesn't follow the tire position then it isn't caused by the tire.
      Also if you have a shop involved then I would start asking them questions. If they replaced it then they should be able to 100% identify the cause or at least cover the cost of the tube if you end up with the exact same flat again right after they fixed it. If not then look for a better shop.
      Understand that most shops will initially back away from taking any sort of fall for any flat. Once a bike leaves the shop a flat can happen at any time for a number of reasons and most of those reasons the shop shouldn't be liable for....but if you say this is happening super quick then have them swap it and have the mechanic ride it and test it and see if a flat happens.

      PSIMET update: I just put on a brand new inner tube. After mounting the inner tube with tire on rim. Pumping at least 30 psi, I drew a line across the rim and tire, rode the bike and yes, the tire is actually moving ever so slightly forward from the rim dis align I g the line to about 3 millimeters. If If i have ridden the bike any further, it would of dis maligned even more causing the tire to rip off the valve. What can i do to fix this? Other than replacing the tire? The valve rim home is the right one for the rim (presta) I inflate the tire to at least 30 psi. 😤😭

      if it is "snake bite", you are probably pumping too low pressures. Invest into a pump that has pressure indicator (10-15 eur), and pump maximum pressure that you can (max pressure is always written on the side of your tires).

    • @Galgann

      if its from the rim - just one small hole on the inside side of tube - just replace the rim tapes. Maybe you bough new bicycle, but manufacturer used shitty rim tapes. You can replace them easily yourself, and they are quite cheap too.

      When an inner tube goes flat, the tire will always come off the wheel. So the real problem is to ask why are your tubes going flat? Inspect the tire & the tube to find the location. If you put in new tubes without finding the problem (e.g. maybe a tack in the tire, or piece of wire, or spoke poking the tire, etc), you will keep getting flats.

      Air is getting out. There is either a hole or a bad valve. The air isn’t just disappearing. You just haven’t found the leak that’s there. Also flex the valve to the side while under water and you’ll probably find a hole at the base of it.

      If a tube does not leak air then there is no hole. If a tube loses air quickly then there is a hole. If it goes flat overnight then there is a hole. If it goes flat over a month then that's air making it out of the tube on a molecular level. Normal.
      Put more air in your tube and then submerge it. If you see no bubbles then you don't have a hole or leak. Don't forget to submerge the valve. Don't see anything then hang the tube up and watch it over a few days. if you come back and it's flat then its done. Chuck it.

      What happened to me once was that the tube was getting flat overnight, yet I could not find any eeror with it when I dot it out. I even inflated it, hanged it, and it was still inflated one day later. Put it into the wheel - flat overnight again. I have no idea what the deal was with that one, eventually I blamed it on valve failure and just replaced it. New tubes are not expensive - its just that dread that if I dont know what caused it to go flat, it will happen soon again with a new one too.

      @@fradiedsouza8279 so what eventually worked for me was that I replaced the rim tape (and the tires themselves before that, as my tires were quite old, but that did not work until I replaced the rim tape). In the end it was stupidly easy and cheap fix, I guess the old tape was not doing its job properly and was creating some miniature tears in the tube that I could not see by naked eye, but would deflate my tire overnight. I also had regular flats way too often - 2-3 times a week. Since I replaced the tape, not a single one.

The spoked do poke a little bit out from the rim and idk maybe that's the problem

    • @Galgann
      @Galgann 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you do not drown wheel, just the tubes. If you cant find any problem, it could always be a valve malfunction. So just replace the tube, they aint expensive. But if you keep getting flats - pumping higher pressures (I always go for the maximum that is indicated on the side of my tires) and replacing rim tape (again very small investment, just 2-4 euros per one and you can easily replace them yoursolf) is alyways a good idea.

      A hole in the tube is usually best fixed by fixing the cause of the hole and then replacing the tube. If it's a hole in the tire then you would either need to boot the tire or replace it. In general I would recommend replacing any tire or tube that has a hole in it. You can patch a tube if you are handy enough and can get your hands on a patch kit.

      If you watch the video you might find that it has the large jagged tear along the length of it that results from rapid release of pressure. Usually caused by the tire sidewall failing or the bead of the tire creeping off the rim. This can happen on lots of older or inexpensive bikes that have been left sitting for long periods of time and then have their tires inflated. The bead can creep off of the rim over time allowing the tube to sneak out and then explode.
      Your tube will tell you what happened.
