    Here's a video idea! You guys are the undisputed kings of the shootouts. What if you take a Squier Classic Vibe, a Made in Mexico vintera series, a USA reissue, a custom shop, and an actual vintage guitar (all based in the same decade, presumably 50s or 60s) and do a blindfold test. I think that would be a super interesting video and a good way to go straight up the line. Throw me a 👍if you agree!

      I didn’t either, or so I thought. I played a PRS since 2001. But when I got a *good* strat, there really is a certain magic to them. They’re not the easiest to play compared to others, & they’re a pretty lousy choice for metal shredding with modern alternatives, but there is something undeniably amazing when you’re chugging out tones like in the beginning of this video. They’re super dynamic instruments, and you can get the sweetest quiet sounds or if you snap the strings like you want to break them they’ll just wail and thump. It just feels like a much more engaging and ‘connected’ instrument than my other electrics, and the clarity on all the pickups with all the chimey overtones is soooo good.

  • @08Barclay
    @08Barclay 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Before the 5 way, many folks stuffed a match stick in the slot, to jam the switch between positions on the 3way, getting a tone similar to what the 5way sounds like now.

  • @oskarileikos
    @oskarileikos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Way before the 5-way switch players modded their strats so that the lower tone control would actually be a separate volume control wired into the middle pickup, and the bridge and neck would be wired to the 3-way switch just like in a telecaster. This would give you not just the middle positions, but also neck+bridge and all three. It was called the Memphis wiring, though it's very possible that it has other names too.

    First principle - No two guitars sound the same regardless of whether they are identical in every observable way.
    That understood, real vintage ‘50s and ‘60s Strats generally sound very different in the vast majority of instances. As you mentioned, the body wood changed from Ash to Alder in ‘56 and the pickups were constantly but subtly evolving. By ’61 they were distinctly mellower, ’62 being what many consider the optimum Strat pickup. Neck profiles and thickness from ‘50s thicker to ’60s thinner, changed the mass of the neck and this was greatly influential on the sound of the guitars.
    Experience has shown that rosewood vs. maple fingerboards regarding brightness of tone is a myth. Blind trials and experience have shown that there is no consistent or predictable tonal difference between a rosewood and a maple fingerboard on a Fender guitar. I have heard and played Strats and Teles with rosewood boards that were brighter than those with maple boards and vicey versey. While the neck as a whole is highly influential on the tone and resonance of a guitar, the fingerboard wood apparently does not affect the brightness of any particular guitar very much or at all. They do feel different to play, however, and whichever you prefer, that’s the one for you. Tonally though, not really a factor. As for lacquer on the board, Pete, I’m skeptical. I’d like to see a blind comparison.
    Also; yes, a properly set up 7.25” radius neck will not fret out unless you intend to do 1½ step bends and such. Very low action is not a good idea, anyway. In many instances, slightly raising the action (and lowering the pickups) improves tone and sustain, but that’s another discussion.

      Remove the neck pickup tone pot, wire all the pickups to the remaining tone pot, and move the volume pot down a spot. That's how my Warmoth strat is set up (with push/pull pots in both spots, one to split my humbuckers and one for a midboost circuit that came with my Ghost piezo system). I have both wired as volumes though, one electric and one piezo.

      I've got an Indonesian Squier Telecaster I bought in the 90s and a new Player strat built in Mexico. There is a big uplift in quality and sound. However, I can't see there being much of a difference between a guitar built in Mexico and one built a couple of hundred miles further north in the USA (often by Mexican workers) with the same pickups and hardware. Vintera and the Mexican made Fenders can be BETTER quality than the US ones.

    Is it correct that in the 60s you could choose between a rosewood or maple fretboard as said at 25:55? I've never see a 60s strat with a maple board.
    Great video as always!

      You could special order a maple fretboard at some point after the early '60s. For an example of this, look up Bob Dylan and Robbie Robertson's black Telecaster.

    5 way switches weren’t available until late 1977, I bought a early 1977 Stratocaster in March 1977, it had a 3 way switch but all black plastic. I remember being able to buy 5 way switches in guitar player magazine.

    Some very nice tones there! I'm a little older and my hands don't cooperate as well as they used to, I prefer the 7.25" radius these days. Single line leads seem easier with 9.5 and 12. Although I've never had an issue 'fretting out' on a 7.25. JMHO... --gary

    If you think you can feel the wood grain when you bend strings, that's just scratchy frets. Your strings never actually make contact with the fretboard, try it out.
    It's another reason why it doesn't make sense that your fretboard material would affect the sound at all.

      @@bobzmuda3940 You didn't understand the context of what I was saying.
      I never claimed your fingers don't touch the fretboard, that would be stupid lol. I was debunking the thought that fretboards with a lot of grain will "catch" the string and feel scratchy when you try to bend a note. Your fingers definitely touch the fretboard, your strings do not. If you think your guitar feels "scratchy" when you bend a note, it means you need to polish your frets.

    • @bobzmuda3940
      @bobzmuda3940 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TcSomers ah i see your point now. true yes, scratchy bends definitely could be your fret wire.
      but what im sure theyre talking about, along with eric clapton and the way he described bending on rosewood vs maple, your fingers feel the grain of the rosewood, where as maple feels smoother on your finger tip while fretting and bending.

    Just for the statistics: while in the video „Full Walk-through Of The New Gibson - Namm 2020“ RePeter’s average repetition rate was 1 Yes (or Yeah, Right, True et cetera variation) every 12 seconds, in this shooting it‘s 1 Yes every 23 seconds. Rob‘s rate lies at approximately 1 Yes every 15 minutes (= 900 seconds) which most likely makes him a less qualified confirmer of Lee‘s statements. Is this the reason why linguistically very creative Rob was replaced by RePeter? What do you guys think? Any idea? Do me a favor, and let me know.
