@@fredtyu5723 Time Out came out the exact same year as Kind of Blue. Cool jazz was very popular into the '60s on the west coast with artists like Vince Garauldi who did, among many other great things, the Charlie Brown songs.
Petter Vos This comment is pretty funny to me bc I bought Bitches Brew when I was younger, only because I liked the cover art. It was my first jazz album and I can't lie it took a whiiiile to get into, but it got me into the genre
Bill Evans was doing fat r&b chords before r&b was a thing. Edit: Also worth noting he has witness to back up the fact that he actually wrote a ton of Miles Davis' blue in green and had beef with Miles for taking so much credit.
Jazz musician/student here, and huge fan of yours Anthony. I would say though that Coltrane's Ballads and Kind of Blue aren't really Cool Jazz albums strictly speaking, although obviously they are both incredible albums. Kind of Blue was such a revolution in Jazz in the sense that it really explored modal concepts of playing over static harmonies, which was wildly different to the far more common quickly-changing chord progressions which are commonplace in pre-modal styles like cool jazz and bebop. Cool Jazz was still firmly rooted in the harmonic movement of bebop; just without the intensity and fast tempos as you said. And in addition, I'd say Ballads is more of a hard bop album (despite the fact that the album does mostly consist of ballads, hence the name). The way Coltrane plays on the album and indeed in all of his material I would hesitate to call 'cool' in the way that cool jazz sax players on the list like Paul Desmond (who features on Time Out) and Ben Webster. It's much more rooted in a hard/post bop idiom. It's also important to consider that the cool movement was actually more of a callback to the swing era, as a rebellion against the aggressive, fast stylings of bebop. But putting that aside; excellent video and excellent albums!
ben webster isnt even a cool jazz musician hes a swing era musician. he was just playing some ballads in soulville. i feel like a lot of non jazz oriented people get ballads and cool jazz mixed up
Jim Hall's Concierto de Aranjuez ft. Chet Baker and Paul Desmond is my favorite cool jazz song. It's 19 minutes long, but it is just the best song to drive to. It's in my opinion a perfect example of jazz. The relationship and dynamics between the current soloist and the guys just accompanying and accentuating the current soloist is beautiful. And each transition from one soloist to the next is absolutely brilliant and unnaturally natural for it to be unscripted. I adore that song to death. I'd also suggest Bohren and der Club of Gore if anyone's interested in a noir sound of jazz. Those guys go above and beyond, their music is the epitome of noir jazz. Their Sunset Mission album on youtube is phenomenal. Walk listening to that downtown at night, you're in a noir movie.
I've been branching out into jazz for the last year, but it's such a massive genre that I often don't know where to start beyond my local jazz radio station. Will definitely be listening to each of these albums in-depth. Looking forward to more jazz starter packs!
You should maybe also do starter pack videos for artists or bands that have a very extensive discography, for example Swans, Bob Dylan, The Fall someone like that.
Swans: I like trying to recommend White Light from the Mouth of Infinity. It's a good album but that album title is so ridiculous and pretentious sounding. haha
Kind of blue is pretty much the Jazz album that got most of the Jazz fans into jazz . If you don't like Kind of blue jazz is not for you . Time out and Ballads are amazing albums too , I simply worship John Coltrane . Also , Do Progressive Rock starter pack
Nearly spit out my nuggets when you said Time Out. Been listening to that record again this week. "Blue Rondo à la Turk" goes so hard. Sounds like a boss battle theme in an RPG. But also, I'm playing Golden Sun for the GBA.
Melon, if you haven't listened to Bill Evans' Conversations with Myself, you should. A great experiment in jazz that made Evans become one of my faves.
Been listening to a lot of Modern Jazz Quartet lately. Their "Django" album is such a great listen for cool jazz as well. Very easy to get into. Thanks for the other recommendations!
I really love these starter pack videos. I watch a lot of your reviews to find new music and your starter packs really help out with that. Please do make more. One I'd love to see is Jazz fusion starter pack like what Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis were doing in the late 60's early 70's era of jazz.
Thank you so much for this video! I actually have to write a paper on a jazz genre and, having no exposure to jazz prior to this semester, I was at a loss for a topic. But I really dig these albums, so I think I'll write up cool jazz! Thanks again!
hey anthony, kool vid, to your comments about portrait in jazz i would add that the chemistry between bill evans, lafaro, and motion is the most attractive feature of the album. bill and his bassist especially combine in many beautiful and surprising ways that would make you think some of the improv was written beforehand, really adds another dimension to the music besides the complex moods
Wow Melon, I'm really impressed, I always liked this type of jazz but never knew about the good artists in this genre. Thanks for enlightening me. This vid could go up on the main channel and maybe it should.
wow i wasn't expecting to see Death Grips on the list
Santiago Barrios Lets make a jazz rendition of Takyon.
Santiago Barrios why you gotta b8 me like that
Santiago Barrios death grips did jazz

Underrated comment.
Made me laugh, 10/10

Cool jazz was a response to bebop, the fast-paced and highly technical development from swing.
True. I was thinking the same when I was listening!
I wouldn’t call Kind of Blue, cool jazz either. Sure it’s super chill and laid back but cool jazz had fallen out of style by that time.
@@fredtyu5723 Time Out came out the exact same year as Kind of Blue. Cool jazz was very popular into the '60s on the west coast with artists like Vince Garauldi who did, among many other great things, the Charlie Brown songs.
i would argue chet bakers self titled album ‘chet’ is cool jazz…
AKA lofi hip hop sampling guide
These songs and albums are to popular to sample I thought the idea of sampling for lofi was finding some super obscure song/album
// YUNG CHASE // what I'm here for lmao
Dean Ween huh
I love how Melon is wearing his Death shirt, recommending us jazz music

Damn straight
What if I don't? Should I be punish?
@@zackzallie8735 Yes.
nah you probably meant Bitches Brew
That album is great, but IMO a bit overrated. I think most stuff art Blakey and the jazz messengers did was much better than Davis
Now do Uncool Jazz
Kenny G?
Bee Movie
Lukewarm jazz
Trout Mask Replica
Kenny G and Snarky Puppy
Fantano, I would love a starter pack for more up-tempo Jazz please and thanks. Also I would love recommendations
Kameron Hansen Milestones ya bish
naturally, Mingus ah Um is another to listen to
John Coltrane Giant Steps
Idk you sound like you'd like Charlie Parker too
James Marsh any recommendations for parker's catalog?

Petter Vos This comment is pretty funny to me bc I bought Bitches Brew when I was younger, only because I liked the cover art. It was my first jazz album and I can't lie it took a whiiiile to get into, but it got me into the genre
AceOfSpades what do you mean? Bitches Brew is damn near MEDITATION MUSIC. It's like ocean sounds to me when I go to bed. I play it EVERY NIGHT. 🙏🙌💯
Bill Evans was doing fat r&b chords before r&b was a thing.
Edit: Also worth noting he has witness to back up the fact that he actually wrote a ton of Miles Davis' blue in green and had beef with Miles for taking so much credit.
Round about midnight is the best album of that decade for me
I talk with the spirits! Best album ever and I think it is cool jazz!
I've been thinking of getting into jazz this week. So this is just perfect!
William T finally ! A normal comment
DOOM uses some magnificent jazz samples, have a look for them.
Magnificent Man That's true, will check it out :).
Thank you!
VEND ETTA Haha yeah, Fantano's comment sections can be very questionable sometimes.
William T If you wanna get into some newer stuff listen to Christian Scott and Alfa Mist also
Miles David' Kind of Blue as a Starter for Jazz is great but also one of the greatest album ever.
Brubeck fan here! Totally approve of Time Out being a jazz standard.
i’m very happy he mentioned portrait in jazz - bill evans trio, that album opened my eyes to the world of jazz, and i’ve never looked back since…

If you like the Bill Evans album, you should try his live at the village vanguard release, some incredibly beautiful performances there.

Bill Evans is how I got into jazz. And yes, it can be depressing XD
Yes, we need more of these starter pack videos.
Anyone listening to Portrait in Jazz and enjoying it should definitely check out Explorations also by Bill Evans Trio.
was lowkey expecting melon to say To Pimp a Butterfly
W
nota smartman I get the joke, but If anything, I'd not say this album has cool jazz elements. Maybe post-bop or hard-bop, some shit like this? Idk
nota smartman more so bebop blood
Ymbert Bonaventure Dickens yeah no doubt
The album has jazz fusion, not jazz jazz, ya feel me?
Dave Brubeck always stays winning

Thank you so much for this video! I actually have to write a paper on a jazz genre and, having no exposure to jazz prior to this semester, I was at a loss for a topic. But I really dig these albums, so I think I'll write up cool jazz! Thanks again!
