@@harrymcdonough but if you go around parties in America in the house of highschool and college students parents, there will be one fucking song from all those british bands of the last 30 years they will start to jump around , and its a song from blur they wont have a fucking clue of the bands name probably yet they know that song and if you play anything else for them from the uk they will bottle you
I feel like the problem was Coachella… I feel like they’d do better touring outside of festivals now a days inside of the US. Coachella crowd also sucks in general
I met Dave (the drummer) and spoke to him about cochella and he said it’s just a festival for stoned people and if you acept that then it’s fun. He also said Damon was stoned 😭but when I spoke to Graham he said he didn’t really like it
Damon meant that this was the last time Blur would waste their time by playing at Coachella. They are definitely not ending live performances based on the stoned fans watching them there who aren't accustomed to greatness. A few nights before Coachella, I attended the sold-out Blur show at Pomona near LA along with a couple of thousand fellow Blur fanatics. The band were rapturously received, and the fans sang along loudly to these tunes that they loved. I guess that it's shows like this that keeps them coming back to America to tour. Perhaps Coachella was so lucrative to them that they played it despite the presence of a mostly indifferent crowd.
I saw them during weekend 1 and honestly I was so excited to see them live I didn't even notice the crowd until I saw the headlines the next day. Weird thing about Coachella was most of the crowds were dead... even during the headliners which was so strange. I think a lot of people have started buying tickets just to say they went. Trust and believe I was singing during girls & boys hahaha!
Blur has never had an easy time with America. This goes back nearly 30 years at this point. Go look up the live show they played in Denver in 96 on TH-cam. People are shouting "FISH AND CHIPS" from the crowd and making fun of Damon's accent the entire set and he just looks completely defeated by the end. Admittedly, even as a huge American Blur fan, even I kind of snickered at the fish and chips chant, but of course they don't want to tour here. We have proven time and time again that if it isnt Song 2 we don't want you. Its fucked up because I love Blur so much and would kill to see them play live but the rest of the country (obviously not literally all of it there are some real Blur fans here) just has never cared for them the way I think they deserve.
@@JammerAma No way, I did not know that… I think their fractured relationship with the US is really interesting, especially when you contrast that with Gorillaz. Weird vibes for Damon to mull over. Cheers for sharing ✌🏻
@harrymcdonough Yeah I'm glad he found consistent success here in the end. Just. God dammit America, just go listen to Parklife or Modern Life is Rubbish. Some of the most clever and catchy pop ever written was put on those albums.
Americans have the worst taste in music. I'm American but I also had Irish immigrant grandparents so I had that kind of connection with UK music from my mom. That being said, it wouldn't bother me so much. Some of my personal favorite musicians that are American absolutely blew up in the UK. Tori Amos for example. Meanwhile, people over here love stuff like Nickelback and other redneck type rock or terrible pop country. I don't take it personally anymore 😂
It's probably mostly younger kids too right... I'm not trying to sound like a boomer either they have some good artists but the Gen Z crowd they're not listening to music normally because of short form media. They like little blips and two minute songs. 😂
@@halroxdynasty8683Honestly I'm 17 and I have to agree with you. I personally spend pretty much all my time listening to music, generally bands like Blur, but I've noticed most of my mates get their music from snippets on TikTok. I've never had TikTok so that might be why my music taste seems to have developed differently
I am a yank and followed blur since early 90s. Most Americans don't know them outside Song 2 (they know the song but not the band) and maybe Gurls and Boys. It's a different style of music, unconventional, often not radio friendly. Moreover their music hasn't been circulated in the US heavily for over 20 years ago. I'll restate that Coachella is mainly a bunch of fake rich punks, but give them benefit of doubt most in attendance probably just never heard of them.
1:40 That's not true really. Their first double A-side single "She's So High/I Know" was a commercial flop, even bigger than "Bang" ("She's So High" peaked at number 48 in the UK Singles Charts). Their first big hit was "There's No Other Way", their second single, which peaked at number 8 As for Coachella performance: I think that the band was a bit too full of themselves to think they would go to the United States and entertain an audience, that probably knows only one song by Blur - "Song 2" (which imo is a bit ironic, but that's a story for a whole another TH-cam video). Seriously, their 1992 North American tour should have taught them better
That's a quite interesting perspective of the Coachella's disaster - blur coming back to an event that helped to define their sound. It could be quite a thing for the next blur album, but that's if Damon hadnt abandon blur for making bad Gorillaz albums...
I've never seen Dave the same way since watching that interview. But then again, Nardwuar used to be a dick to bands in his earlier days. He was so rude to the Strokes.
As someone who loves blur a big appeal of them is there music is about and for people who lived in a poor area in the UK and if you haven't really gone through that it doesn't really appeal to you like for example the song "London loves" from park life is about the chaotic and apathetic environment the uk can be to live in
Great video, so many video essays always seem to lack focus and never come to any conclusions. While this was both engaging and informative while staying true to the depressing subject matter. Thank you I’ll keep watching this channel for sure.
Blur are forever will be underrated outside UK, if you’re a fan, don’t worry about those who aren’t, just enjoy Blur, im a fan for 33 years and already gave up since mid 90s to encourage others to give at least few listen to them before making conclusions haha
To The End is playing in the cinemas, just now (July 2024). In part, it deals with the 2 Wembley Stadium shows a year ago, which were played to sell-out crowds. I went on the Sunday and you can be sure all 75,000 of us were singing!
Coachella, once a beacon for true music lovers, has devolved into a vapid spectacle for wannabe influencers and trend-obsessed hipsters. What was once a celebration of diverse and groundbreaking music is now a glorified backdrop for Instagram photoshoots and pretentious fashion parades. The festival's focus on superficial glamour has tragically overshadowed genuine talent. Take Blur, for instance-a band of legendary status and immense artistry. Instead of receiving the recognition they deserve, Blur gets lost in a sea of shallow posers more interested in their next hashtag than the music. Coachella attendees, more concerned with appearances than substance, are a stark reminder that the festival has strayed far from its roots, leaving true music fans yearning for the authentic experience that once was.
I never understand why people (or even Damon himself) would ever give a f*uk about not breaking American audience (inclu. back in 90s). Why on earth anything needs American's horrible taste as seal of approval? Com'on, they're notorious in some form of culture (e.g. mass consumption by quantity instead of quality). The fact that Blur is hugely popular in the rest of the world just not so much in America is enough to call them a real legend! Look at what kind of influencers America has produced last few years! As a Blur fan I call it pride to be "not hooked by American"!
I saw them last year at Primavera Sound in Buenos Aires and the crowd went absolutely crazy, you could see Damon and the band were feeding off the crowds energy. Same thing if you watch their performances in other Latin American countries, where the crowds are famous for being very passionate. You can tell Damon is one of those performers who really seeks to connect with the audience, so if the audience is bad, the performance will probably be bad
As a giant Gorillaz fan I honestly really don’t like how Damon sings on stage, don’t get me wrong his singing is beautiful when he’s in the studio, he DOES have the voice of an angel, so like why doesn’t he sound like that on stage?? Why does he just sound like someone’s dad poorly singing a song he’s barely ever heard? It’s so confusing to me 😭
@@ceru1ean_f1n1ty He’s just gotten older really - I agree his voice is notably different since 2010 especially, that Glastonbury set was the last of the ‘old Damon’ I guess.
