It obviously needs tweaks that realize the current state of conferences. My thought is a 14 team playoff with the B1G and SEC champ getting a bye and the other 12 teams seeded by ranking only and playing the NY6 bowls as the play into a 8 team playoff. If there is no outright winner of the the B1G and SEC at the end of reg season they play the conf champ for the bye, if there is the 2 and 3 teams play a conf final as a play in seeding game.

Where is the acknowledgement of the fact that you took Indiana, offered a litany of reasons why and were completely wrong? How can you consider yourself a serious commentator on college football, attack the narrative coming from your counterparts in the media but completely ignore your own short comings? Be a man, take your medicine and say you were wrong. Wrong about Indiana and wrong about the fact that you thought they would play well against Notre Dame. Because they didn't.

What happens when the SEC goes north into the cold? They get dominated like a Highschool team. No wonder the SEC lobbied the NCAA for years to avoid playing outside of SEC territory. They can't travel. I have not seen southerners get beat so bad north of the Mason/Dixon line since Gettysburg '63. In the Big North Conference, we are not just geographically above the SEC. The Rose Bowl, the granddaddy of them all, this year is basically the National Championship game, by far the two best teams, Oregon and Ohio State. Hey SEC, Don't be going to play games up north, there be wolves.

Georgia is good some days. They would have lost to Georgia tech in their own house, If not for some very favorable officiating calls down the stretch. They're very inconsistent....
Probably the best game left in college football this season is Oregon versus Ohio State.... Notre Dame Texas and Georgia are capable of putting up a good fight though. I'm not even going to sleep on Arizona State versus Texas...

    (1) Can you please show a side-by-side (2 column list) of the 12 CFP teams as column 1, and the best estimate of each team's NIL and financial contributions for this season, as column 2?
    (2) Have you heard any serious discussions or substantive plans regarding the capping of NIL and financial payments to players from each university (analogous to the NFL salary cap)? I understand that outside NIL sources may be impossible to limit legally, but is seems the NCAA could do it as a league in some form or fashion. Moreover, since these NIL payments have been brought into the business contract realm, why don't universities tie the money to a longer minimum contract term?
    (3) I'm concerned that a widening NIL disparity without any caps will ruin college football. I've been an avid football fan for 55+ years and I don't want my favorite team to win just because they can spend more money (like Oregon and OSU).
    (4) I'll be anxious to hear your ideas for when you're installed as the Supreme NCAA Football Dictator! :)
    (5) WHEN is the NCAA ever going to discipline, punish and sanction Michigan for their chronic, blatant and repeated cheating violations? Justice delayed is justice denied! Michigan continues to recruit based on their past cheating and violations-aided performance and record. The inconvenient truth is that the NCAA's failure to timely adjudicate these matters does continuing and future damage to the other, rule-abiding competitors, for years to come.

SEC is still the strongest conference overall from top to bottom, no doubt, but their issue is that the strength is not highly concentrated on a few teams like it used to be. Right now the SEC has like 7 or 8 good teams that are somewhat comparable, and even after that the cellar dwellers are better than the bottom of other conferences. Big 10 has way less good teams than the SEC, but does have a few teams at the top that might be slightly better than those SEC teams. Remains to be seen there, we'll let the playoffs play out, but that is how it appears at the moment.

Joel Klatts argument about the NFL playoffs is so incredibly stupid. The margin of the best NFL teams and the worst is very small.
The margin of the best College Football teams and the worst is very large. No one gets mad if you get blown out in the NFL playoffs because that team still had to play NFL TEAMS, PROFFESIONAL TEAMS to get to the playoffs so they earned it.
In College Football that is not the case, where Notre Dame is playing NIU and Alabama is playing Fruit Loops Academy. Teams can inflate their record by playing opponents who they are clearly better than and dont stand a chance.
A TEAM WHO MAKES THE NFL PLAYOFF PROVED THEY COULD AT LEAST BEAT 1 NFL/ PRO LEVEL TEAM. An 11-6 team in the NFL still makes the playoff because the teams they beat. They dont get left out because they have "6 losses" even if one of them was to the Giants. College needs to be the same, you need to prove that you are able to beat good teams. College Football schedules need some fixing.

Joel, this was probably one of the best college football podcasts I’ve ever heard. Thank you for giving us a logical, yet still passionate take on the current state of this amazing sport. All these talking heads repeatedly bashing the system and 2 teams that were absolutely great stories this year that had incredible teams and incredible years is just classless IMO. They absolutely belonged in the playoff. The talking heads are acting like a team that lost at home to Kentucky and another team that got blasted on the road to an Oklahoma team that only won 1 other conference game are like these perfect teams that all of us fans got robbed by not getting to watch them in the playoffs. Those 2 teams lost their playoff games a few weeks back when they lost to Florida and Oklahoma respectively, knowing full way the playoffs were on the line. USCe lost to both of them and were fortunate to hang on beat Old Dominion in week 1 so that doesn’t sound like a team that was a legitimate title contender anyways and that’s the entire point of the playoff. To crown the best team. SMU and Indiana did what championship teams do. They win and the only losses they do have are against other good teams. Regardless, as a Penn State alum and former lions baseball player, this season and now this playoff has been so much fun for my family and I to watch and feel like we are finally a part of with these meaningful games in December and January and a legitimate title opportunity. You’re taken refreshing and it is why you are the best announcer and member of the media in college football. Another great episode with outstanding comments/views, Mr Klatt! Having been following you here, live game booth, and even at the Herd. 100% agree with you, especially about Lane Kiffin. It is so unfair to say ind/smu not deserving to be on the field after student athletes and coaches working so hard season long and, more importantly, not losing games that they were not supposed to lose. What an insult and disgrace! Keep up with the good work, man!
