  • The 2019 highschool basketball recruiting class featured some of the most talented and recognizable names in recent memory. The top 10 in particular was loaded with talent and high expectations coming out of highschool. But would these 10 players live up to the hype and become NBA stars? or did they wind up falling short of expectations.

A trend you see in this class(most of the selections in the 2020 draft) more than anything is a staggering lack of proper development in the players one could attribute this to the COVID-19 situation mucking up Both the college and nba situations. Also I got to mention had Lamelo was also technically a top prospect up till his junior year in this class but the oversees antics and them saying he wasn’t going to college early really brought his stock down for a bit

Just like every other sport, the reduction in development time is hurting the product. 21-year old kids bodies have the wear and tear of a 35-year old from being raw and unrefined in their game. Or improper training methods. And just like other sports analytics is to blame. So much focus on shooting efficiency and metrics over an all around game. Granted the rules are mostly to blame, but defense is non-existent today. And rebounding. One thing Dennis Rodman always said even back in his era, is leading the league in rebounding is the easiest individual title to accomplish. All you have to do is make the effort as most players on the court are only putting in half effort to get the boards. NBA tried to make it so you had to be 21 to be drafted and the players union shot it down. Maybe they should just be like every job that regular people have that needlessly require a 4-year degree and make that a requirement. Make the college game relevant again and give these kids proper development.

In the 1980s, early 1990s, I used to care about such things, wondering where all the top recruits were going to college. Now, who gives a crap, they'll have left college before you begin to know their names. College hoops used to be my favorite sport, knew the lineups of all the Big East, ACC, and Big Ten teams. Now, I can't name two names from the first-team All-American teams. It's killed my NBA fandom as well. Didn't watch a minute of this year's draft. Who are those names?

I have worked in athletic departments at 4 different NCAA D1 schools, all in different parts of the country, for a quarter century. I WATCHED college hoops decline every year. It's not even a debate. Key regular season matchups were "must-see". With the absolute best connections, it was sometimes impossible to get someone a ticket. Now, they can't give them away at many schools. I gave GS as much heat as anyone on the handling of Wiseman. But, after seeing what he has done (or rather not done) in Detroit, it clear why he didn't pan out in GS. I think he has some offensive skill, for a player of his size. But, man, he is clueless and heartless on defense, sadly. I still hope the best for him, but it's not likely to change. It's hard to hide a guard on defense, but hiding a center is just not possible. He's like a black hole on defense, and that is why he is unplayable.

Man, it is really alarming how the USA game at the high school/college ranks has fallen off a cliff. These guys just aren’t developing as they should once they leave high school. We had 5 non USA draft picks in the top 11 this year. I have a hunch more and more foreign born players will be selected in future first rounds of the draft especially if the USA keeps shitting out these poor classes.
