I removed the mechanism. It was indeed crud filled. I noticed the drive cable/ metal coil is similar to a pipe cleaner . It has some sort of fiber spun into its structure. In one of the manuals I found said NOT to grease it. I suspect it's because when cold, the viscosity of the grease will make it harder to operate.But it's far better now and at least works.In the future, I will use a light, silicon type lubricant, so the cable can freely move as a spiral, in any temperature. My spiral cable thing has begun to flatten but since cleaning has become much easier to operate. I couldn't have done this without your help. Thanks again from Oregon.
I've got a slippage issue as well. Was super corroded,rusty. In fact if I end up naming this 72 super beetle,it will be Rusty. My first step was to try and free up the mechanism,just to see if it would move. I WD40ed the crank,like a dummy,and now it isn't catching the cable gear. So I'll R&R it,or at least just remove it,clean it,and grease it. But the crank mechanism appears to not like to be greased. If I'm hearing correctly from others anyway. I really appreciate your videos,they are the best made,concise, and your tips and tricks are great. Thanks again.
Thanks! I was having trouble getting my 71 bus window and broken regulator mechanism out! The Bentley manual said to undo the front channel bolt but fails to say to undo the top screw which you did.
I know its off topic a bit, but how did you get your central locking to work? I tried to fit mine in and when I bolted my window track in, the rod from the actuator got pinched. Can you shoot me a pic of how your rod is bent, or the inside of the door how to bypass a plate that is in the way of the lock rod from moving freely? Or maybe a video of installing central locking on a later model like yours. I have a 71 and am having trouble installing it. I can fabricate mounts if needed. just need to find out how to install the actuator rod setup. Also, how did you wire the actuators at the hinge point? I was thinking a pin and contact setup. Thoughts?
Hi Kenny, unfortunately my bug is in storage at the other end of the country but there wasn’t anything out of the ordinary with the install That door is actually off my 71, the only thing I did you can see is that hole I cut at the top to give access to attach the rod clamp

@@BoostedVW Did mine tonight. It's stopping about an inch from the top. It's also a little rough going up..brand new mechanism and replaced both. Frustrating. All bolts lined up the 2nd time...first time, glass was not lined up and could not get into opening. I think it's something related to the side window, but we had it out. Also, the rubber going down the side window went WAY down into the door panel. Almost like someone replaced it and didn't bother to cut it.
Yes done that after three days have found I can get the window up but it sticks coming down, to the extent that it pulled the glass out of the metal holder. I have purchased three new mechanism all the same. So currently have the glass loose in the holder and I need to push the glass down as I wind down to keep it in the holder. Have got rid of the flash winders as they wreck the mechanism thread. Any further ideas ?

I hadnt thought about the temp thing, it doesnt get that cold here in Aus but I could see it being an issue in colder climates

Done everything you said and still cannot get the winder to operate smoothly without sticking half way ! Any ideas ?
If you unbolt the glass can you slide it up and down by hand smoothly or is tight spot?

How did you take the window crank off?
If it’s just the stock factory handle you pop the plastic cover off and there’s a screw underneath it.
Would be nice if you could have explained for a few seconds how mechanism works
how to remove vent lock
Look under the lock youll see the 2 rivets holding them in place.
