His actual personality and policies were fairly irrelevant to his fans. They just wanted to see the underdog win. Trump thinks his fans like it when he acts overconfident, or when he makes fun of his opponents, so he tries to appeal to his fans by acting overconfident and making fun of his opponents. The break in Johnny’s voice in the original recording when he hits that line “well if they freed me from this prison, if that railroad train was mine, I bet I’d move it on a little further down the line” sends chills down my spine. The power and pain in his voice showed the deep empathy he had for those Folsom inmates.

Just make this one whole video and send it out to every high school to teach about American Presidents.

This is the best podcast series i've heard in a long time. Louie's presidential knowledge is boundless. Also I'm impressed by Shane's breadth of knowledge in early American history. It's great to hear Louie's perspective of the more contemporary presidents that he has lived through with his funny anecdotes. His dream about Nixon killed me, suprised he never turned that into a bit! Gold!

Wow. I binge watched this entire series. The last 15 minutes or so was extremely inspiring and makes me feel optimistic that people in this country can move past the terrible cycle we have been in. This whole series was hilarious, entertaining, informative and inspiring.

This series is the most entertaining bit of podcast media I’ve ever encountered. A genuine fly on the wall experience watching two amazing comedians talk about something that clearly interests/matters to them. Shane definitely the more history oriented, fun anecdotal things about American history, while Louie is almost stream of consciousness talking about the People who have affected it. He comes off as having a political view based on how he talks about certain presidents but looking at what he’s saying through the lens of a man fascinated about the nuance and complexity of someones personality and experiences, you can see Louie’s devotion to trying to give the human experience a definition. The way he talks about these larger than life figures in a way that they are people and not political figures is incredibly interesting. Other comments have and will ascribe a political agenda, or some sort of sinister motive to his praise of certain presidents. But I see the deep personal insight of someone who is close to the raw concept of humanity and couldn’t give less of a shit about what the presidents did politically. Louie, and Shane to an extent, aren’t making any statements in this but purely enjoying a discussion of fascinating people. One of the greatest comedians of all time, and one who will definitely earn that as well, making wildly entertaining stuff.

The last 20 minutes of this podcast are so profound. I come back to this series comstantly for those moments. Insane to consider the perspective that professional funny men have exposed me to. So many people mock the whole "modern philosophers" angle, but when you listen to guys like louie, it's hard not to see shades of it.

Louie's off-hand recollection of events is unbelievable! I saw him way back in 2008 at the Berkeley Center in Boston where HBO taped his "Chewed Up" special. I was in tears, third row center and Louie looked at me with pure joy when he saw my tears 😭
