    Thank you SO MUCH for talking about this! When I was in college back in the late 70s, my teachers told us to NEVER eat, drink, or smoke while painting and always wear gloves! Acrylic paints are made with chemicals that can penetrate your skin and lead to kidney and liver damage. There are popular painters who used to do performance painting who are now no longer with us from liver failure. But now that young people are learning through TH-cam and not formal education, there’s no one telling them about the dangers.

      And thank YOU for chiming in! It's so important to take care of ourselves as artists because we are often exposed to a whole lot. I am very used to wearing the gloves, so much that it feels weird when I don't wear them:)

    I am very interested in watching you paint and talk about the choices you make as you go. I believe many abstracts painters do not think it is important to talk about color or values or composition because they believe it is all intuitive. I have a K-12 Art education degree so I learned about all of those things. You have rekindled all of that for me. You are very good at what you do. Thanks again Andrea. Kris

    • @andreacermanskipainting
      @andreacermanskipainting  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow, Kris. This makes my heart soar. I can't help but teach those fundamentals and share my knowledge. As you know, we are trained to scaffold and demystify things.And I agree--you have to learn those basics before you can be intuitive, and too many new painters overlook this. I appreciate your comments!

    If you're using a lot of water in the acrylic paint for the initial background, are you not in risk of reducing the bindability of the paint and risk a future flaking off of the paint because it's been diluted too much.

    • @andreacermanskipainting
      @andreacermanskipainting  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      No, acrylic doesn't flake off in that way. It's totally fine to water down acrylic paint:)

    • @JanetCaterina
      @JanetCaterina 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Paint doesn't spread well if there's not a good gesso base. Using a purchased, ready gessoed canvas will not provide a good base. One or two coats of gesso are necessary

    • @andreacermanskipainting
      @andreacermanskipainting  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I hear you but I honestly never do this and have never had an issue because I use so many layers of paint, and I'm using high quality paint.

    • @mr-tg4xn
      @mr-tg4xn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Gesso is like paint so if u r putting a lot paint layers which most abtract artists do then there is no need to re apply gesso to ready made canvases, it's an over kill

    • @andreacermanskipainting
      @andreacermanskipainting  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I do agree with this. I think some artists resolve their paintings in just a few layers, and this might be where it makes sense to add some layers of gesso.

    Hi I came across your video searching abstract art how to create compisition in your painting, some thing I am struggling with really bad right now. I would have loved to have watched you pulled this painting together to completion. I think that would have greatly helped me. I did learn so much from watching you paint and I need to order a color wheel and some brushes and tools that will allow me to create loose and abstract shapes. I have learned I hate using stencils and that my style is less a bunch of marks and geomatrics patterns and more beautiful colors and compisition in quite and muted tones with interesting shapes. What I loved was learing about the 3 part break up of your canvas however I still am so confused about how to create a great compisition. When you were painting before placing the darker green your painting looked very much like a dreamy forest with low over hanging swamp like branches and moss and with a lake in the far background. (Your first application of tourqiouse) Also at 1:05:04 I kind of freaked out when several eyes emerged from your painting. One set at the top left of your painting just under your turqiouse color and another set in your bold red violet flower shape. Can you do a video or short showing your finished painting. Thank You

    I like how you have done everything in real time, even if it means waiting for the paint to dry. That makes it relatable.
    @54:08 It was so satisfying to see you wipe away those black lines, lol!
    It's wonderful that you're conscientious about using paint. I totally get it. In fact, that's what made me give up painting when I realized how much of it was being washed into the ground-water through thousands of bathroom or studio sinks. Nobody talks about that. On the contrary, it's now become a fashion for art teachers to mock their students for being economical with paint. It's like they're living under a rock and are unaware of anything that's happening to our environment with regards to the infinite array of man-made pollutants, including the many chemicals and materials that are used by artists of all kinds.

    Hi 🙂
    Your class was interesting and your piece turned out GORGEOUS!!! You definitely stopped at the right time. How you got there, even though I watched it, I still have no idea! I'm going to say intuition.
    May I offer you a suggestion?
    Quinacrodone is pronounced "qwin•a•crow•doan"....we shorten it by saying quin red-violet or quin gold or quin burnt orange, etc. When one is explaining things using quin instead of quinacrodone helps the tongue from twisting....at least for me it does, lol!

    • @andreacermanskipainting
      @andreacermanskipainting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So glad you enjoyed the class! Abstraction is one of those mysterious things, but I try to make it easier. Thanks for the suggestions re: quin red-violet. I say the whole word because if someone were to want to buy it, they won't find quin red-violet! Thanks for the tip:)

    You're very brave. That last part really was a little scary. The "black" addition was a risk when the painting was developing so nicely. I'm not sure I could bring myself to try it. I hope I'm able to take some greater risks than I do right now, so this video is really just what I needed.

    • @andreacermanskipainting
      @andreacermanskipainting  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's hard for me to take risks too. Sometimes they work, sometimes, they flop. However, I feel like you can see when I played it too safely, so I almost have to take the risk. Glad this helped!

    • @susannerauch8237
      @susannerauch8237 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andreacermanskipainting Well, you're braver than I am. I'm basically a landscape painter, but I've recently become greatly intrigued by abstract works that I've seen. I don't think I really appreciated the beauty of the form until I'd been doing landscapes for so long and laboring over so much detail that I'm a little worn out now. Your videos are helping me get over my nervousness about trying this "genre." The little I have done is actually a lot more fun, even while I find it more difficult. It definitely comes from a different place, as well, which I find I can find hard to do. Thanks again. I'll be watching more of your vids.

    I painted an abstract while watching, though not live. I'm self-taught but learned late in life that too much water can weaken the molecular makeup of the paint/pigment. I use Floetrol instead of water.

      I hear you! I like Goldens wetting agent better because it lasts forever and it's archival! But it's more watery than Floetrol. Also just so you know Floetrol is not archival if that matters you ;)

    • @andreacermanskipainting
      @andreacermanskipainting  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't because they are pre-gessoed and I usually have so many layers on my paintings that it's not necessary. But many people put at least 2 more layers of gesso on top of the factory gesso. Up to you.

      I do not, but some people will add many layers of gesso to a pre-gessoed canvas. I have so many layers and textures in my paintings that I don't feel the need to gesso again. Helen Frankenthaler, a famous abstract artist, painted on un-gessoed canvas. It's personal preference!

      That's true, no need. I have one that only has paper. However, I worry that if I bang that one against the wall I could break a corner of it. Therefore, I prefer the cardboard, but that's a personal choice for safety:)
