Pool companies (in Thailand) still use a 1 to 10 mix of cement and sand to backfill an inground fiberglass pool. I mentioned our video and they laughed and said "gravel is bad and will damage the pool"! They also don't install a separate filter system but instead use only a large 5 micro filter bag in the skimmer. When I asked about a site tube to check or remove ground water, they said, "Don't need one". They use simple, cheap PVC ball valves (not true ball valves) and thin PVC pipe for supply lines. Seems they think good enough is fine for the premium prices they charge.
Hello Christian, you and River Pools are awesome, thank you for the knowledge and making the industry more professional. I had a fiberglass pool installed a couple seasons ago, they used crushed stone, I had them put in a sump drain tube in per the manufacturers installation instructions. I have constant power to sump drain hole, a sump pump at the bottom connected to pvc piping with a quick disconnect that joins to pvc that takes ground water to a french drain all under ground that drains to a creek. Question is please, do I leave that sump pump plugged in and removing any ground water or do I just let it fill in with water and only run it if a pool repair was ever needed?
Great question! It's only really necessary to pump the water out if the pool needs to be drained for a repair. If ground water really starts building up...like half way or more, it won't hurt to pump it out. That should be a very rare situation however.
He did a video on draining fiberglass pools. Bottom line - do NOT do it! Apparently, draining a fiberglass pool is the pool equivalent of feeding Gremlins after midnight.

What size rock works best? 3/4 washed or smaller?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thank you Simon!
We were advised to do a 1:5 mix of cement to sand to fill around the pool. Do you see this causing issues with movement or will it be secure?
how well does it hold up in high mountain climate where winter lasts from October to May?
Does just fine! 👌
Hi Christian. In Australia they commonly use cement stabilized sand. Was the issues you guys experienced using sand or cement stabilized sand?
Hi Cade Arnel! Thanks for watching. The issues we were having was with sand. Since switching to stone all issues have been eliminated.
Thank you. Do you do fiberhlass lap pools in West Virginia? Also, is there a way to filter or refresh salt water for the pool instead of draining It?

Can u give me the name of the rhino rock, size, n where I can get it? Thx!
Hi Russell! We assume you're referring to the rod itself, not the rock. We have them made for for us. We ship them with the pool shell👍
