  • My new friend, Danny, and I ventured to the Manistee National Forest, near Mesick, MI in mid-April 2024 to hike one of the most popular backpacking loops in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. We started our 3-day, 2-night backpacking trip from the Upper River Road Trailhead and hiked a little over 9 miles to a nice campsite near the Manistee River for night number 1. We enjoyed hot chocolate and Peach Cobbler as well as a beautiful star-filled sky before heading to bed. On day 2, after filling up with coffee, we hiked another 9-ish miles, enjoyed magnificent views of the river throughout the day and ended up at a nice campsite near Arquilla Creek. After dinner and some Mountain Berry Cobbler, we went to bed early. We awoke to a thunderstorm (despite nothing being forecasted, not unusual for me!), but it did not last long. It was a peaceful rest and Day 3 brought beautiful weather to complete our journey. On the final day, we only had about 2 1/2 miles to return to Upper River Road Trailhead. It was an absolutely wonderful time spending about 10 miles on the North Country Trail, followed by the remainder on the Manistee River Trail. Special thank you to Danny for a wonderful trip!

I have lived there my entire life. Sometimes I take for granted the area in which I live.

Thanks for watching!! I think we’re all guilty of taking things for granted when it’s in our backyard. I know I am! Thanks, again!

Beautiful hike and so fitting for "Living Water" reference. I definitely need to check it out. Am more of a day hiker and appreciate your ideas for Michigan hikes that aren't to far for a local guy like me. Blessings

Thank you for watching!! Glad you appreciated the “Living Water” reference (even though I didn’t get the verse quite right!) If you get the chance, this is a great trail for day hiking as well and think you would really enjoy it! Thanks, again!

You're such a considerate hiking partner. I've only watched a couple videos of yours, but thoroughly enjoyed it. Keep up the good work! This is my favorite hiking trail so far in the Lower Peninsula.

I did this trip three years ago on my 70th birthday, I did it in two days but should have taken three. This was my first overnighter.

I've done this loop once. Last September. Parked in the same Upper River Road trail head and also went clockwise. I stayed in a different site ( I don't remember the number) but that area is full of such great ones. That is definitely one of my favorite backpacking spots and I would love to go back. Thanks for the video.

i do this trail twice almost every year. well over 2 dozen times in total. always enjoy watching videos of the loop. have found that eddington creek has the coldest water. one of these days, i am going to measure all of the stream temps.

Thanks for watching!! I hope you have a fantastic trip! So, the route that we took, before crossing the suspension bridge, there are no designated campsites, like there are on the Manistee River Trail (west side). There are several dispersed sites that you will come across, and that is one that we found for our first night. Happy trails!!
