My wife and I were Corgi companions for 16 years. Our Pembroke Corgi, Bronwyn, passed in 2007. Once we retire again, I'd like to live next door to a cattle ranch that uses herding dogs so we'd have an excuse to send the Corgi next door to work every morning -- 'cause if you don't give your Corgi work to do, it'll make up its own job. And you probably won't like what job it assigns itself!

We brought home a Corgi puppy back in May of this year, they are a TON of work! But they are amazing dogs. 9 months old and she is better behaved than the neighborhoods 5 year old kids! She sleeps next to me while I'm at work, goes on trail runs, can't wait to go for a car ride, is well behaved at the race track and loves to go surfing with us at the coast!

A couple of things that need mentioned if someone is thinking of getting a Corgi... They shed like crazy. If dog hair bothers you DO NOT get a Corgi. They are super easy to overfeed and a fat Corgi is not 'cute' it's prone to joint, back and other health problems. They are very smart and they can be stubborn. This means they need to kept busy and handled mind engaged. We adopt rescues and too many Corgis end up being given up because people didn't do their homework.

That's why most responsible breeders have an application to ask the hard questions before selling to a prospect that may not be aware. Most of us will also put a clause into our sales contracts that if for any reason they can't keep the dog they MUST bring it back to the breeder, even years later. Most breeders have a list of people who will adopt them for a small adoption fee and have already been screened. We never have any problem finding a good home for these wonderful critters. That way we don't add to the problem of shelters overcrowded with unwanted animals. Responsible breeders are not puppy farms.

Teresa very good points about Pems.
There’s a great article titled “So You Think You Want a Corgi.” I send it to all new corgi owners as I prefer to sell my pups to people who have previously owned a Pembroke. I take back any pup someone decides they don’t want but I want to avoid that, as much as possible.
They ARE incredibly wicked smart and everyone wants a smart dog until they get one and only then do they understand you must do something with Pems.
They are NOT a good dog to get if you work outside the home. They aren’t happy alone for 8-10 hours a day. Get a greyhound instead.
You must exercise a Corgi at least a few hours a day to wear them out. A tired Pembroke is a good Pembroke and vice versa.

As darling as Corgis are, pleasepleaseplease keep in mind that "lovable anatomy" - those long spines. The babies in these videos should not be climbing stairs that young. The growth plates in their backs haven't completely meshed setting them up for painful and serious back and disc problems as they age. I know people who still carry their Corgis down stairs at 8mos. to a year! (Climbing UP is safer than coming DOWN." Talk to your Vet - they will know. Yes, they are darling. They also take a lot of work.

Susan Troccolo I always tell my new puppy owners, Pem pups belong on the floor, not the couch or bed. ACL tears are common on pups allowed to jump down during the first year.
Although I have to say, some Pems are so energetic it’s almost impossible to stop them.
Out of all the Pem pups I’ve raised, zero had back or ACL issues. Usually avoided by having parents hips x-rayed before breeding.
Corgis ARE prone to DM (think Lou Gehrig’s disease for Corgis.) This can be avoided by health testing the parents with a simple, inexpensive cheek swab. Test the parents BEFORE breeding to make sure you are breeding DM Clear or DM Carrier to DM Clear.
Always ask to see parents’ testing and call the lab at the top of the page to confirm testing was done and the results.
DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) is ONLY problematic if you breed parents who have two copies of the DM gene (an At Risk Corgi.)
Breeding both parents with one copy each of the gene will produce a percentage of pups who are At Risk.
Do your research and DO go to see where your puppy is raised to make certain you are not supporting a puppy mill.
Puppy mills horribly abuse and neglect adult dogs. Also try to find pups raised in homes as Pems need exposed to everyday household noises or grow up to be skittish adults or those who attack vacuum cleaners.
Pem pups raised in backyard kennels or the barn with little human contact are much less expensive because they are not socialized and Pems personalities are pretty set by 8 weeks.
Many scammers exist for Pembrokes as they are popular right now.
Scammers can have elaborate, beautiful FB pages.
I quit breeding and raising Pem pups as all people seemed to care about was the bottom line (how much?) was the only rude question I got.
No one seemed to care about the care I took to help the pups transfer to their new home.
Pems are wicked smart and people always want a smart dog until you get one. They MUST be exercised, not just turned out into the backyard.
A tired Corgi is a well-behaved Corgi. I tried and 99% found homes for my pups who had already had experience with the breed.
They can be “Barky” dogs if not trained properly. I always recommend trading or a Puppy Kindergarten for you, mostly when the pup is 4-6 months old or after their series of shots.
They are tough little creatures who have a mind of their own. They can often be Alpha dogs and need a kind but firm hand while being raised.
They turn out to be the best listening dogs if you put in the time.

My puppies go to both working, shoe and pet families but since tail banding must occur within the first three days, you don’t always know how they will be used. I own a pure bred pembroke welsh corgi and Georgie my corgi has a tail, so your facts are wrong. People chop off the dogs tail for athsetics, mainly because that's the way the owner would like their dog to look. Actually it's very cruel to chop off your dogs tail due to nerve and infection reasons. If you do chop off the tail it really needs to be done within the first 5 days after they are born. Please get your facts straight before presenting them. And BTW the majority of the Queens corgi had tails, unless they were used for as a working dog probably if they were docked, because the queen was not a cruel person epecially towards corgis. Look up docking tails, gradually countries are making it illegal.

We had a Pembroke ("Candy") in the 70s- she loved children until...
one day, a 6 year old child grabbed her by the muzzle and hurt her. She yelped (wouldn't *you?* ) and after that, she just avoided small children. If said small children came to the house, Candy made herself scarce by going upstairs and hiding under a bed. They are a family-friendly dog.
