Great video - very helpful. However I found it impossible to remove the silver cap using my thumb as it was stuck on very firmly. I had to use the edge of the kitchen table to push from the opposite side of the little button until I heard a click and then the the silver cap lifted off easily. I followed the the video for the rest and everything went smoothly. Once again, Car Key Man, thanks for uploading this video - it's a real money saver!
@@TheCarKeyMan Who Knows - perhaps 9 years of abuse? While I'm no Arnie Schwartzenegger (that's Dwayne Johnson to the under sixties), I am reasonably well-built. It took me about a week to work up the courage to use the extra force but I had a second key so I decided to take the risk - it was also going dead with a stuck silver cap! I have now changed the battery on this one as well using the table but, like a previous poster, used a 2025 battery as I didn't have 2023 one to hand. Both keys are now working as they should.
The silver part just wouldn’t budge on my 2nd fob (1st clicked over nicely) eventually got it off- when I refitted I added abit of Duck oil (or wd40) on a cotton wool bud to lubricate it- works perfect now

Thanks for taking the time to film this in a clear and comprehensive way. The key on the Mrs' Passat is starting to play up. I didn't know it was just a bog-standard CR2032 lurking in there. So this'll be the first thing I try, without now needing to butcher access to the key internals. Cheers!
Hi Paul, we see a couple of common faults on these. Some Passat keys have just one button that stops working. Normally a good quality battery will sort around half of these cases, other times it needs a new electroninc switch

Hello Patricia, did you get this to work in the end? The only time we ever need to code these back in is if the key battery has been dead for a while. As a rule, if it was working when you changed it, it shouldn't need programming. The programming needs to be done using a computer

Hello, I watched your video alreay :-) to replace my battery and learned the usage of the plastic key as well, but I was wondering if you knew a way to open this car if the key battery dies... On "modern" ones, there is a key inside the remote that you can use to open the car via a hidden lock,. I am sure that around 2008, VW had a plan for this, but could not find it. Why can't all instructional videos be as succinct and clear as this? Also, if you have one lying around, a CR2025 works just as well as a replacement for the original CR2032 battery (same voltage and power, just 0.7mm thinner).
