After myself and a bunch of friends saw Rollerball in the theatre as teens we organized a game of our own version of rollerball. We wore our hockey equipment with roller skates using a softball . We even had guys on each team with bicycles. We sure had fun in the parking lot of our apartment complex beating the crap out of each other . lol
i know the purpose of the movie was to show brutality in sports but i come from track cycling on the velodrome we have keirins and derny racing not at all dissimilar from rollerball. if you ever wanted to do an espn ocho style league/exhibition, velodromes would be the perfect venue
It's brilliant .. an actual arena was converted. This scene at the beginning of the movie - where Madrid lose 3-1 to Houston - seems so "normal". Like a normal sport - no music, some commentary, the manager yelling, the referee sending people into the sin bin for 3 minutes ... it feels like a genuine sport. Very much akin to football or ice hockey.
5:39 Eventually, even the regulated Rollerball games became battles of attrition, giving you the feeling that the games would only really be won when no one on the other team was physically able to play anymore!!!!!
I read somewhere and seen an actual poster of what was left of the national skating derby (nsd) roller derby league at the time in 1981 I believe in South America where they played rollerball but without motorcycles
Although the plot revolves around control by corporations and the individual not counting, I can see parallels between the blood sports of the gladiators in ancient Rome and modern contact sport.
6:18 That player in the background wearing the number 9 shirt wasn't wearing skates!!!! You'd think for such a fast-paced game, even the substitutions would have to be wearing their skates at all times so they'd always be ready to quickly get onto the tracks, wouldn't you?????
no - here in Europe, and ALL over the rest of the world - the home team comes first - followed by the visitors. That is now true in Major League Soccer as well.
Most analog scoreboards I've seen have the home team on the left, both in football and basketball (and hence any other sports that would also use those venues). The only exception is baseball and that's because the visitors bat first.

RIP Jonathon E! James Caan
Nomatter how many times I see this film, the games always hold me to the edge of my seat!
@russellcollier8202The director is still alive and has never allowed anyone to have the rights to this "sport".
What do you suppose would happen to a rollerballer who knelt during the Corporate Anthem?
I saw this when I was 15 and was astonished at how cool it was. I wish this game actually existed because I’d love to play it.
Great film about individualism and merit.
blood and guts film making...........no cgi here

gr8 movie I remember when it came out
From what I've heard, when filming was completed, the stuntmen wanted to play a game of ROLLERBALL for real, but the studio execs wouldn't allow it.
As a kid and teen I always wanted to play this and the closet I can came I was playing on the local men's roller derby team back in the day.
Add a ball with goals and you are close enough? Maybe modernize it with riding esk8s and EUC's?
I was 10 years old when this movie came , prodigy, I see it happening
I assume you watched it on TV when it was edited for broadcast.

In the original story one of the ways to win was to kill the other teams players since there were no substitutions.
@@olimpo59 I guess they didn't call them the rollerball murders for nothing!!!!

It reminds of Hockey Night in Canada when I was a kid.
the old swooper Moonpie
I like how the Houstan coach is upset about the "foul" play that hurt his player.
Real Madrid...Madrid ,Madrid 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
I would love this to be a real sport

You have an excellent eye. Good catch.
Brilliant film, can you get it ondvd?
Yes, it's been available for many years now. Look up e Bay and Amazon, B & N.
Yes
I love this game and that's me saying it.
how the rules, the humanity of it gradually erodes.. to the whim of the Corporations...
Likely an air cannon that fires the ball as fast as 100 mph.
I would love for someone to put Jim Ross's calls into the rollerball matches. No one will be disappointed. By Gawd!
Even Paul Hayman would be great for that.. he was in the remake version of it.
How about making rollerball a bona-fide sport and having both men and women playing in one match like old school roller derby.
2:08 Tony Orlando?
Cameo appearance!!!!
❤❤❤❤❤
... Sportsball!
Fun to see more brains all over the court😅

He might have been an extra biker.....
@@manickreations Notice how he was also wearing the number 9, which was Moonpie's number?????? :P
@@STEJTHEGREATEST in France wee said: "faux raccord".
Faslse connection!
Looks like the number 3.
@@STEJTHEGREATEST If you look closely, the holes in 9 is to the right and the gaps in 3 is to the left so he's def number 3. Cheers.
With Houston being the home team their name and score should be on the right of the scoreboard. Not the left.
alonenjersey incorrect

@@jazzx251 I've learned something informative on the internet. Thanks so much.
@Cary Groneveldt I can't say it bugged me. But being a long time college/pro sports fan, It sort of caught my eye.

Dick Enberg doing pre-game...never knew.
6:40 should of said it was worth at 6:38
Anyone here bc of Rollerdrome?
This movie is about the NFL
which is funny to me cos as i watched this, i was all "and all we have is dumbass FOOTBALL"
And NHL.
CIA
What the hell they’re doing? Fkng wooollywood...
Some of those moves technically violate occupational safety and health standards, the organisers are liable to have an inquiry

Worst remake ever of a cult classic..
Didn't even watch the remake.
What could they have done better?
booooring game
Especially the final where all players die except Jonathan...🤦♂️
