This movie is amazing. As you watch it you can feel how under the thin coat of fake friendship, the resentment and the violence boils up until the cover of the pot blows off. Not many people will nowadays be able to stand the bunny massacre either! Masterpiece.
Wow, that perfectly summarizes the film and its main internal dynamics, very well put indeed, I agree with entirely, it's a special piece of filmmaking. Cheers!
There’s a deeper meaning in the movie which, maybe, non Spaniards will not catch. It is said in the movie the place these “friends” go hunting is an old battlefield from the civil war, many people died there. The way the movie ends is very allegoric. I’m talking about how these men bring things from the past to the present, how they end because of this, and who has to deal with the consequences (the young guy). You could say the place is almost haunted and these men are almost cursed. The hunt is like a ritual in which they transfer this curse to the next generation. All this can be extrapolated to Spain as a country. Even today our politics are still haunted by the same disagreements that lead to ‘36 war. And that war had its origins on the carlist wars of the 19th century (which were fought for quite similar reasons). The whole movie is an allegory that portrays Spain like a desolated cemetery scorched by the sun, its men cursed to repeat the past.
Just discovered your channel. Love the work and dedication that you put into these videos. It's strange how this movie (and Spanish cinema in general) doesn't get a whole lot of international attention. I recently read Buñuel's memoirs and he talks about this problematic fact as well, albeit in the case of literature (who the hell reads Clarín, Lazarillo de Tormes, Unamuno, outside of the Iberian peninsula?). Greetings from Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Hey Max, thanks a lot for your appreciation, I'm glad you have found my content useful. The fact that this film has not attained broader recognition abroad surely defies reason, and Buñuel's observation remains on point, as of today. Curiously, if those authors are generally unknown and unread by most people outside the Iberian peninsula, how much more would Portuguese literary figures be? Indeed, my goals with these essays, are not only to acquaint viewers with overlooked or forgotten film gems, but also to get them in touch with other related cultural aspects and traditions, through poetry, philosophy, novels, music, painting, etc. Hopefully this video might have achieved that, at least to a degree. Once again thank you for your kind words and interest.
