The economy is grappling with uncertainties, global fluctuations, and pandemic aftermath, causing instability. Rising inflation, sluggish growth, and trade disruptions need urgent attention from all sectors to restore stability and stimulate growth.

With the US dollar losing value to inflation and other currencies gaining traction, uncertainty looms. Yet, many still trust in the Dollar's perceived safety. Worried about my $420,000 retirement savings losing value, I seek alternative security for my money.

I completely agree; I am 60 years old, recently retired, and have approximately $1,250,000 in external retirement funds. I am debt free and have very little money in retirement funds compared to the total value of my portfolio over the past three years. To be honest, having a portfolio-advisor for investing is genius!

I used to never use self checkout until I realized how much money the stores were stealing from me!! Now, I always do self checkout and watch like a hawk as the prices ring up. If there is an error, I stop immediately and get the employee watching the area to make the correction. There are still so many great differences between the prices on shelves and what rings up but thankfully, I am now not paying that difference out of MY pocket!

Call us Members of the Crazy Club. I loved your story of "not charging enough." I can share that story when I returned to the garden center to let them know that I purchased eight bags of potting soil but was charged for only two. Indeed, they looked at me like I was crazy! "No one does that," said the manager. Now I can say, "Yes, they do. Clark and I play the purchase game fair & square." The garden center and my garden are thriving, due to the amendments of honesty and integrity.

I refuse to go to the self check out. I don’t work there, so I’m not scanning my items. I even quit shopping at Lowe’s because they only have self checkout these days. I don’t care. I’ll stand in line for an hour if I get an actual employee to check me out. By scanning your own items, you are putting somebody out of a job. It’s just greed on the part of the store because they’re too cheap to hire someone.

Some stores won't take cash for self checkout, and those terminals are always failing and you have to wait for an employee to bail you out. Might as well use cash 💸 because it inherently reduces your spending, and have the employee do the checkout work for how expensive everything is.
But either way, you. MUST be aware of the numbers when shopping, because what you spend is a reflection of your rate of pay. If you're being overcharged or just needlessly paying high prices, you're devaluing your labor. "Just pay me anything, that's fine. I'm only here at work to tread water."

Such a dumb comment - no one is out of a job . In self checkout you are paid the same as any cashier, only you are helping out with 6 registers! Not greed. Self checkout is for buying 15-25 items, and leaving quickly. Try working it -- you’d have a different attitude. And in self checkout that usually is an “actual” employee!

Funny you mention education benefits. I mentored kids fresh out of school in my career. One of the conversations beyond the basic skills and industry particulars was how to utilize all the benefits that are available to you. Thinks like ESPP purchasing, 401K matching and college reimbursement. I would jokingly say, "You need to allow yourself to be poor for a couple more years to build up the habits that will help you in the long haul". Most kids are pretty overwhelmed in the first year of their career - fine - get settled and make a plan. The critical thing is you have to take the brass ring - no company will throw it at you.

Self Checkout? Perhaps in some cases while not in others.
We generally use self checkout everywhere EXCEPT at *Costco* and *BJ’s* Warehouse. They use the same inferior brand terminal hardware for self checkout. The receipt printers, as often as not, print illegible receipts. If you use your receipts as records, or for returns, this matters. If you go to the attended checkout, they use different, reliable printers. Thankfully the lines at never busy BJs are non-existent so it is just as fast.
As to pricing errors - we reward stores that make it easy to fix. For particularly good sales, we take photos of the price tag with the product. Our regional grocery, Meijer makes price corrections easy - the store delegates the ability to the attendants at the self checkout.
The other way to assure correct pricing - use the “Scan & Go” apps available at many stores (except Costco!?!) to see the price when you scan the product and out it in your cart. Sams has best, smoothest operating scan & go app out there. Everyone should simply copy it.

The U.S. has a culture where we pitch employees and management against each other. Management claims employees are stealing from the company while employees claim management is denying opportunity, stealing pay, bonus, other features. This attitude is self destructive since it causes everyone to look over their shoulder all the time instead of doing any work. Other countries, companies have developed a more trusting attitude where employees, management are encouraged to look out for everyone. In those places, the companies have discovered that they get more work done with less input. This results in better satisfaction for everyone.

I will strongly argue against the unpaid internship. Any work worth doing, is worth getting paid for. It does nothing for your salary history, and there are many job openings out there. If you want to do charity work, then call it that. Never work at a for profit company without compensation. This is some wrongheaded nonsense. Offer to work for a lower commission or trainee wage, but never work for no pay.

Ugh. Not another employer program outsourcing skills building to a college that remarkably just has expert instructors in any field you can dream up.
Think about the overlap of interests or, rather, the lack thereof.
The college's interest is tuition and fees paid up front, or else they drop the student.
The employer wants the employee/student to learn valueable skills, so the company can make more money, which will not be shared with the college.
So voila, here's your very watered-down curriculum, student. Thanks for playing the game.
This goes for the VA VET-TEC program, too, which was supposed to pay in full only after the student is hired and working in IT.
But instead, maximum pressure and withholding of course materials is inflicted until the student quits VET-TEC, switches to the GI BILL which pays everything up front and again, thanks for playing the game.
If it's a veteran's benefit, it's an ego play and usually worthless to the vetran but very lucrative to the third party contractors lobbying the VA to create these cash grabs.

Those people knew me, but to get more clients, several times I did small jobs for free, understanding that I had no college degree or certification at all, was female and a single mother, and working out of my home 40 years ago, all strikes against me. Very quickly I was overwhelmed with work.

I had 2 donuts at Walmart ring up for 16.98. The price was $1.40. I had already paid when I realized it. I went to customer service. They wouldn't refund my card. They would only give me a gift card. I don't believe it was an accident. They tried to steal my money and then refuse to refund after I caught them. I bought toilet paper and canned food to get rid of the card. I rarely go to Walmart now.
Ingles also has things ring up wrong but you get the item free when it does that which is a better policy. Still, how many people overpaid vs me getting the item free? Funny how items never ring up lower than what the price is supposed to be. Always watch each item ring up.

I keep hearing about retooling and get more education for these other jobs....technology reduces the amount of people who are needed to do the job available....so now your competing with younger people who are just getting out of college with fresh skills (no old skills to get in the way) and employers dont want to hire people who are older as it drives their health care costs up....ageism is there and I have had it happen to me....its not legal but, it happens and that is why people tend to get cranky when you just say "you need to get new skills" that is not always possible and on the other hand....who is going to pay for an older worker to get a new skill?????
