Definitely agree with you on all points - especially with the songwriting. Portnoy gives DT a bit of edge due to his influences. Plus I think with him being absent there's been an imbalance in the basic songwriting, as it's been left to Petrucci and Rudess. As much as I love Jordan as a player, his range as a composer is rather limited and seems rather cheesy (which explains the Astonishing, which has a strong blue cheese smell - and not in a good way). I hope that things have clicked back into place on this new album, because I've found most of the last 5 albums to be largely uninspired.
This is so crazy how they were able to put the feeling of a panic attack into a song. The Lyrics basically explain what a panic attack feels like and the song change the more it goes and you calm down.
Dream Theater. Such a legendary group. John Petrucci, one of the greatest guitarists of all time. John Myung, one of the greatest bassists of all time. Jordan Rudess, one of the greatest key players of all time. Mike Portnoy, one of the greatest drummers of all time. and James LaBrie.
A beautiful track. I got a nice memory requesting this song at a bar, and having it played omnidirectionally and loud.. saw some people groovin', and me as well of course. Thank you Mike for your part in its creation!
For fucks sake DT hasn't put anything out for years that's as good as their work with him. He's sober, he's good, and DT needs a breath of fresh air. Portnoy might not be the answer but he's a better answer than the soulless techno-prog metal I heard from DT last time.
Portnoy's style of playing is great because he always expends the perfect amount of energy. All the cymbal work and tom fills keep this song super interesting.
"lost all hope for redemption" "why do I feel so numb" "I dont know why I m constantly reeling" "Helpless Hysteria" I cant think of a better song that can explain how it feels to constantly feel in verge of dying everyday. Dream Theater songs are truly something else, and this is one of my favorites from Octavarium. And Mike is just a plain genius. Drum works full of flavor and creativity. I m glad I could see him perform it here on Drumeo
Dude there are so many great drummers right now. Brann Dailor, Mario Duplantier, Eloy Casagrande, Daniel Erlandsson, Tomas Haake, Brooks Wackerman, Derek Roddy, Dirk Verbeuren... List just goes on. But all that great drummers just 1 greatest and that one is mighty Mike Portnoy... He is just simply amazing...
I have always thought the same, since I heard Panic Attack and Never Enough, I could notice a certain influence from Muse which seemed like an excellent combination
1. Double Bass groove at the last chorus is even better than the original. 2. I see that he places his foots way in the middle on the pedals. In past he used take them all the way to the up. 3. Mike will continue to create legendary drum parts in the new upcoming DT album. 4. Mike is one of the most influential drummers of the century.
Amazing as always. Very interesting to see him holding the stick in his left hand backwards for the majority of the song. I assume there's a reason for that. You'd think it would feel a little weird on some fills but apparently not to Mike.
Outstanding. I want to see him play Mangini's parts. I personally think that Mangini is better technically, but Portnoy brings a passion to the kit that gives the music a different kind of energy and feel.
@@bvq330 Well, MP is very musical. This playthrough was pretty different to the original recording. The essence of the original is all there, but the details are different, he was trying out new grooves and fills at several different parts. I imagine that's how he'll approach Mangini's tracks. Even if he can't play a song exactly as MM did, he'll have no trouble figuring out a variant that is functionally the same in terms of how it serves the song, and then he'll mix up the details to suit his style.
The entire album means a lot to me, and watching again Mike playing DT songs is simply amazing. Welcome back to the family Mike, we were waiting for you 🤟

A beautiful track. I got a nice memory requesting this song at a bar, and having it played omnidirectionally and loud.. saw some people groovin', and me as well of course. Thank you Mike for your part in its creation!
This album deserves a 20th anniversary tour
My fav DT track! Good day to be a MP fan
For fucks sake DT hasn't put anything out for years that's as good as their work with him.
He's sober, he's good, and DT needs a breath of fresh air.
Portnoy might not be the answer but he's a better answer than the soulless techno-prog metal I heard from DT last time.
The master in action, perfect, and the sound its amazing! congrats guys
Portnoy's style of playing is great because he always expends the perfect amount of energy. All the cymbal work and tom fills keep this song super interesting.
"lost all hope for redemption"
"why do I feel so numb"
"I dont know why I m constantly reeling"
"Helpless Hysteria"
I cant think of a better song that can explain how it feels to constantly feel in verge of dying everyday.
Can't wait to hear the new album, and watch Dream Theater live with MP on drums again!!!
LEGEND!!!
I always thought this could perfectly be a Muse Song
I have always thought the same, since I heard Panic Attack and Never Enough, I could notice a certain influence from Muse which seemed like an excellent combination
It's because this album was (partly) inspired by Muse actually.
Sorry to say I personally am not a judge of anything never was never will be but just enjoy great music and DT does it for me. Rock on.
One of DT's best tracks ever. Hard to believe it's nearly 20 years old!! 🤘
7:15 exactly how i felt every time i beat that track in rockband! WOOOO lean back throw the sticks
Can't wait for the new album, I love you Mike❤❤❤
Me playing "Hot Cross Buns" on the Toms: Yeah, I think I'm ready to tour with Dream Theater!
Amazing as always. Very interesting to see him holding the stick in his left hand backwards for the majority of the song. I assume there's a reason for that. You'd think it would feel a little weird on some fills but apparently not to Mike.
2:22 Casually brushing his hair back
Okay Mr. Portnoy. We get it. You're a drum God. Easily top 5 best drummer in the world. No argument or debate. I've just accepted it over the years
Outstanding. I want to see him play Mangini's parts. I personally think that Mangini is better technically, but Portnoy brings a passion to the kit that gives the music a different kind of energy and feel.
I agree. I love Mangini, but he plays so calmly and makes very difficult things look super easy.
I prefer a more energetic delivery.
Honestly, it'll be really interesting to see how MP will play Mangini's parts.
@@midastheunwise2423 Agreed.
Wowww!!! Very Very compliments Mr.Portnoy!! SuperFantastic!! Very Very Good!
There is a reason you don't see many dream theatre drum covers on YT
Exactly! Nobody dares to play those tracks 😶
Currently, air drumming this classic banger on the toilet 😂
Class is Permanent!
The sound of the snare is Just perfect
The entire album means a lot to me, and watching again Mike playing DT songs is simply amazing.
Welcome back to the family Mike, we were waiting for you 🤟
RB2 GANG WHERE YOU AT
I used to love playing this song in RB2. Now, after years of not playing it, and in my 40's, it kicks my ass haha
This man is a living legend in the world of drumming!
🤘🏻🇸🇪
He's good at drums.
I love MP’s cymbal work. He is really the only drummer who has all of those cymbals and actually uses them.
5 gold stars FC
people always talk about how precise mangini is when comparing with portnoy, and forget how precise this man actually is. He's the complete package. best drummer i have ever heard.
