I have been listening to Gene since 1965! I am 71, and back then it was obvious whoever knew music, the Byrds WERE Gene. McGuinn tried, but was no Gene! His songs, his presence were so much more than his band mates..especially Crosby. Yeah somethings didn't work out when he went solo...his not wanting to tour to promote albums...No Other, and Geffen! Enuf said! Gene had so much going, took over 40 years! You people who are just now discovering Gene go back, listen to everything! He was a genius! Chris Hillman once said, he didn't know how Gene could write such wonderful lyrics...he never saw Gene read a book or magazine! Gene Clark...NO OTHER!
Gene WAS The Byrds when they transitioned away from Dylan and recorded several of Gene's songs, all brilliant, well-known pieces. No one else in The Byrds, throughout their entire careers, came close to producing the elite quality of lyrical and melodic talent that came so easily to Gene Clark. But David and Roger assumed essential places in the chemistry as well. No Byrds without Crosby's best in rock history high harmonies. No Byrds without McGuinn's magical sonic paintings on the strings of the Rickenbacker. Personality wise they were described as often insufferable people but what a shame the three men with an embarrassment of riches in the talent department couldn't find a way to extend the creative life of one of America's preeminent bands There is on TH-cam a video of McGuinn doing an acoustic performance of Gene's Eight Miles High in Japan. I don't often feel sad when I'm presented with an artistic performance that is simply astoundingly brilliant but that's what I felt. What they might've accomplished in the studio continuing onward from The Notorious Byrd Bros, as a matter of speculation, might've resulted in them leaving The Beatles in the rearview mirror
Gene was an extraordinary man, singer and poet with great emotions. He wrote the most empathic lyrics and took my heart for ever. Every song he sung with passion. This one is movingly beautiful, unfortunately unreleased. Thank you so much for posting this song, I love it and I'm very glad. 🎶💕
I had the good fortune to see Gene Clark perform three times. He's the best singer I've ever seen on stage. He's also the best songwriter I've ever seen on stage.
Gene was really on that night, in spite of having a bad cold. Did 2 really good sets, and told some cool stories. And yes, I'm the one who recorded the show which now has been widely circulated. Not the greatest audio quality, granted, but an important document .
What an amazing song! The lyrics, melody and voice are inspirational and intoxicating. Pat Robinson and Gene can take a bow for this. Unappreciated brilliance.
Cool song. Great lyrics. He could sing the high notes or if more suitable the lower key. It didn't matter, it was just the picture the song would present. He had that talent. A friend of mine lived next door to him in San Diego. Said he was a real gentleman with a good heart. He called him "Geno".
This is one of the better CRY songs that Geno and I wrote in 1987... it sounded great with the band live... Nicky Hopkins loved it.... he called it a "Bonnie and Clyde love song..."
+Pat Robinson Just finished reading Einarson's book about Gene. Thanks for all you did to keep Gene's music out there. I can't wait til the CHRY songs get out there
Amen David, so proficiently stated! What a shame, they could never figure things out together. I read that when Crosby approached Gene and Roger, at the Troubadour about joining their duet, Mcguinn later said he told Gene, that David was known as a 'troublemaker'! Adding fuel to the proverbial fire, was the money coming into Gene for his song royalties!
Yes, McSquishbottom, he continues to send us songs through the ether and they are received by those with special transponders. Gene's working on his ethereal production studio, and there will soon be upgrades to enhance the sound quality, add more orchestration, etc. Real genius never ends, even after you die!
This is good like basically all his work, but Dark Of My Moon is still his best of the unreleased songs. Listen to how well he sings in the C-part here in this one.

Love this song: typically Gene. In Holland/Europe, we love Gene too.

RIP, Pat. You and Gene wrote some GREAT songs!
I heard that the late great studio keyboardist did some music work with The Byrd who flew alone...
@@thomaswalker4806 Great indeed, loved NIcky Hopkins.
@ Pat
We still miss you and Gene

Golly geepers! I have to start loading these songs in my pc too.. It sure has been rewarding having this hero in my life.
So much fire in this song. Such a bitter waste he burned out too soon. But at least we have some wonderful music remaining.
Thanks very much for sharing.
#1 hit .. an unknown classic
great discovery. Thanks for posting.
So fine share. Fun Bob. TY
Does this amazing guy keep producing posthumously? I've been a huge Clark fan for years, yet always find something new to me. It's almost eerie.

Would fit perfectly as a track on 'two Sides to Every Story'. A tremendous songwriter who might still have had many more great songs in him.
you post amazing stuff. thanks
Thank you for sharing this beautiful song I missed it ...Dylan is right about Gene Clark... & I just didn't get it

A brilliant song. I wonder if a demo version is out there somewhere...
THIS wasa frickin DEMO!!! DUH!
@@peterwall9856 actually it sounds like a live version which is different from a demo thanks
Never heard before, one of my favourites. In Holland/Europe, we love Geene too
Anyone know what happened to the "You and I" video that disappeared from TH-cam?
