New Opeth albums always require several play through before it all settles into place. Watershed specifically had me confused for the longest time and then when I finally got it, it became one of my favourites of theirs. Very much looking forward to the new album and the full unedited version!

For some reason, the only way I can listen to Watershed is the 5.1 mix in stereo I dvd-ripped back in the day. All the instruments have much more clarity and I'd always listen it with the vibe of the Porcelain Heart video before that stereo mix. I'd recommend listening to that specific version.

It had to be 15 years ago but I remember I was heavily into Dream Theater and would post on metal forums asking users to "get me into Opeth." I would have members come and tell me "if you can't get into it, it's not you, it's them."
I don't know what happened but Opeth has been my favorite band for over 10 years now. Mikael is my favorite growling/screaming vocalist of all time. Nobody can compare except for whoever the vocalist is for Draconian during their demo days.
Man Orchid screaming, Morningrise growls. Definitely my type of shit haha.

I don't think something like music can actually be too intellectual for someone, but I know what Richard is saying. I think I "get" this music and I still feel those moments of confusion and uncertainty when there's a change I wasn't expecting or the rhythms and riffs are complex and hard to follow. But that's the thing - it makes it more satisfying once things click and you actually do "get" it.
I only got into Opeth in 2020, so this is the first new album they'll release since I became a fan. I haven't been waiting years like the longtime fans have for the heavy stuff and the growls to come back, but hearing Mikael sound as strong and demonic as ever with those vocals was exciting.

In Cauda Venenum definitely grew on me sooner than the rest, but this track has quite literally brought me to tears, and I never thought we would hear THIS in a new Opeth record. • @SuperCoon88
      @SuperCoon88 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@RiffisKing In Europe? There’s dozens of different European languages, dude. It might be similar to paragraph in other European languages, but in English, that would specifically and objectively be titled “Section 1.”
And Mikael might have said that because English isn’t his first language. In German (as an example of another European language that I’m familiar with), the direct translation would be “paragraph” because their word for “section” has a connotation more distant to the concept of section in a body of text, thus interchanging “sektion” with “paragraph,” since “sektion,” (which literally translates to the English “section”) is much more typically used with dissecting a corpse or doing an autopsy. Any translator would take the English word “section” in this context and translate it into “abschnitt” or “paragraph,” not “sektion.”
So the best translation for “section symbol” in German would be “paragrafzeichen,” or literally “paragraph symbol” in English. And come on… it’s two S’s. It’s way more intuitive to call it “section 1” in english. And it’s also what the symbol is called in English.
It’s a weird wrinkle in translation, but the connotations and usages of synonyms in one language don’t always carry over to another.

@@RiffisKing I don’t think you’re picking up what I’m dropping. Yes, the direct translation would be “paragraph,” but that’s not the proper translation. In English, it is “section.” A professional translator would take the symbol as section because the definitions and uses of the “section/sektion” and “paragraph/abschnit/avsnitt” between English and the Northern European languages are different.
This is because in English legal documents you have sections with multiple paragraphs. To point out a specific sentence in a document you might say “Section 2, paragraph 3, line 16”
Section and paragraph have similar but different meanings in English, especially in a legal document.

👿🔱😈... definitely check out poisoning the steps of Babel by Dawn Of Ashes Wild video.. Cant say im a opeth fan.. But this song is diff and ive never heard it before..so 👍☺.. it's good that you're giving a band you don't really dig and new to you music a chance... I try to listen to new and different bands and genres daily... you can't get stuck in one genre or place in life..life is Journey so check out everything along the way😊

Absolutely love prog when I get it.. Rush, Tool, Mastodon.. they usually have the best drummers Neil, Danny, Brann.. sometimes I just don't get it.. Dream Theater, Opeth, Devin Townsend.. I don't hate it, but I keep trying to like it and it doesn't happen.. 🤷

I am glad he is back with some growls, however the music itself is gone way overboard with the Prog side. Earlier Opeth was easier to digest. the growling sections were paired with much heavier music, and the clean vocals were generally paired with great acoustic guitar parts. Now it all just seems to run together. What I enjoyed about the older stuff is how dynamic each side was, the heavy was just that, heavy and the clean sides were much more melodic and for lack of a more manlier word, pretty. It was that dynamic clash of the two sides that got me interested in the band. Everything is just blended together now.

When they changed their style from morningrise to MAYH it was a shift. Same thing happened with still life, watershed and post watershed. That’s what kept them fresh and unpredictable, and it kept them creative. When a band stops being creative and starts making material they’ve already made, it bores and stagnates them.
This is why Opeth is different because Mikael isn’t afraid to reinvent and change the status quo, and he does it for himself not for anyone else. You have to respect that as an artist. Now that doesn’t mean everyone is going to like it and you aren’t going to lose fans in the process, but you will also gain fans. Basically I get what you’re saying (even though I like this), but mikael is going to be Mikael.

Pleasantly surprised that Mike brought back the growls.
    The guitars got heavy-er.
If I had one complaint it's the drums are way too high in the mix and drier than the Sahara Desert, but played very well.
But the growls are back baby.
And that make's this Neanderthal very happy.
    My favorite band is back.

Ghost Reveries is up there for me, while BWP never struck me as a favorite. I'd put the first 4 albums on top. BWP below Ghost Reveries / Deliverance and all the recent albums on the bottom. Been listening since the 90's. Glad to see the return to form and they have artfully blended their more recent sound into it in a way that I can dig. Growls = good
