  • This is the story of El Mirage California, a community located in San Bernardino California that if you blink you'll miss. Much like an actual mirage, you're not sure if what you're seeing is real as you drive through this town of just over a thousand people. The story of a place destroyed by meth and false promises, this sad tale may not draw you in to come visit. We meet with Charles Floyd as he talks about the state of the town and an old iconic building that has seen better days, Murphy's Bar and Grill.
In the second part of our El Mirage visit we move from the town to the dry lake and meet up with Leonard Whalquist, Dan Zan, and Robert Weber as they introduce us to land sailing, a sport that involves taking special boats with wheels out into the desert and catching currents of wind to gain speed across the open landscape.

Thank you, not many people have. This isn't a place you can accidently find yourself in or on the way to anywhere you'd normally visit.

Glad you enjoyed it, this town was the hardest of all of them to date to find info on.

Yep there's actually a lot of California that's like this, not with this exact story, but many towns in the desert aren't doing as well as they used to.

Having driven the southwest US deserts...would love to drive this area just for its stark natural beauty. LOVED driving U.S. 93 from Phoenix to Vegas.

This desert has amazing views all around, this area is used a lot in commercials (The dry lake, not the town) but the Murphy's bar had a music video shot at it around a decade ago as well.

It's actually very peaceful living out here. And the desert sunsets are amazing! You should come back for the time trials on the dry lake this November. You will get some great footage, but come early because the dust can be overwhelming by 10am or so.

There's nothing better then a sunset in the desert.

I grew up in El Mirage. I can't say if your facts are accurate or not, but that's not how it felt growing up there. In fact, a few generations of family were born and raised there. You want to know how it really was, hit me up

How dangerous is this area due to the Pot grow operations out there?

I couldn't really say, it's pretty off the grid and we weren't there for more than a few hours but there were lots of cars on the main road. The dry lake is frequented pretty often though.
