This is the first program I see that you have made. It really held my attention ❤️ to feel and think about the enjoyment of comfort food. AND I love to see how real Japanese people eat. I'm a big fan of properly made ramen 😍

All of your comfort foods are mine as well. I would also add zaru soba. When I was little my grandmother took care of me at night. We would walk to the public bath and, if I was good, she would take me to a restaurant for a treat. I'd always order zaru soba. She would beg me to order something else because people would give her dirty looks for ordering something more expensive while her granddaughter got the cheapest thing on the menu. It's still one of my favorites today and I think of her every time I make it. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

I have been excluded from the grand opening of my work’s new office because I have a cold. Watching you enjoying Japanese food I have grown to love makes me feel happy. Thank you. I might order some of those dishes from my local Japanese restaurant to be delivered tonight and have my own party. 😀

Yes, some of my favorite foods are foods I ate as a child. My mom would make lasagna and curry which I still love. Yakisoba was my favorite food to get when we'd go out to restaurants and I still get happy when I can eat it now. A quick midnight kinda snack I'd make as a teenager is just a bowl of rice topped with an egg over easy with the yolk a tiny bit runny and a bit of ketchup and shoyu. Simple but yummy! Grilled cheese sandwich made with sourdough bread is so good, too! Also, can't go wrong with pizza! Oh, and I love ume! Ume with rice--so ono! Now I must go find something to eat! 😋😄

Thanks Shinishi. Just to let you know in London Katsu Chicken with rice is a favourite comfort dish and becoming popular dish the day after you’ve drunk a lot of alcohol.
I’m of Greek Cypriot heritage born and live in England so my favourite comfort foods are :
    1. Pork souvlaki with Greek salad
    2. Fish and chips with mushy peas
    3. Beef teriyaki with rice and broccoli

Hi shinichi we're from Liverpool in the UK we visited Japan 3 years ago and we mainly make and eat Japanese at home, we watched your stream and I had to stop my husband from drooling, I'm now going to make my favourite onigiri with okaka as I love katsobushi, I also love okonomiyaki, my husbands absolute favourite is oyakodon

  • @laurene2586
    @laurene2586 2 ปีที่แล้ว

In rural America, we grew up with onigiri filled with umeboshi without the seed! Even though my grandparents came from Japan, we didn't put nori on the outside of our onigiri, but I can see where that would elevate it! We didn't eat any other filling in onigiri except ume, and sometimes it didn't even have a filling--just salted rice in the shape of triangles for picnics. My favorite Japanese comfort food is oyakodon.

My childhood comfort food is my mom American fried rice which is very similar to Japanese chicken rice with toppings. We also add black raisins in rice too with fried chicken, sausage and over easy egg as toppings. My mom also made stir fried mince beef and onion with curry powder and butter. When we are craving midnight snack, we took that from the fridge and made sandwich in a sandwich maker, It smells sooo good that woke me up every time my brother made it. In Thailand we also have similar version of spaghetti napolitan but we use macaroni instead yumm and my mom used a lot of butter too. The last one is corn soup which is really simple; just milk and cream corn in a can. My mom used to make that every Sunday morning along side with toasts, bacons, sausage, and over easy eggs.
My favorite onigiri are ume and mentaiko. Your mom gyoza recipe is my all time favorite. From 2011 I worked far in the countryside so when I craved Japanese food, the recipes from Tabieats, Cooking with Dog and Just one cookbook are my go to.

I love onigiri filled with tuna salad. So yummy! Comfort food for me are: Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, Onigiri, various types of pasta, pizza tonno e cipolla (tuna & onions), green asparagus wrapped in bacon with gnocchi... I have a lot of comfort foods.

My comfort foods tend to be Southern cooking…my Mom was from Alabama. I grew up as an Army kid so we lived all over the US & Europe. But for comfort food, I almost always fall back on my Mom’s cooking. My favorite is chicken & dumplings, which is also my daughter’s favorite of my Mom’s. I’m a very good cook; not being boastful here, I learned from 3 generations of Southern women & one Cherokee Elder. And I learned all about Italian, Irish & German cooking. At 14, I got to go to a professional German cooking school in Hanau, Germany. I experimented on my family! 😁
The first time I made spaghetti for my husband, he never ate that dish anywhere but home! On days it was on the menu, he would come home early when he could! And having grown up in a family of six, I tend to cook that much; there was always plenty of sauce for the next day. Gravies & sauces are richer the more they are cooked.
My go to though is still beans & cornbread. I usually use pinto or northern beans. I grew up eating pinto beans & my husband, who was from Indiana, ate white or Northern beans. I especially like the soup the beans create & I mix it with cornbread, onions & tomatoes. Sometimes I add a dash of pepper juice.
Anyway, that’s some of mine. Thank you for creating content like this. When I’m not feeling well but need to eat, I’ll watch your food videos. They help me want to eat!
    Arigatōgozaimashita

  • @honeyfoxliving
    @honeyfoxliving 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Those foods look great. I still need to try Japanese fried chicken!
My favorite comfort foods are a mix of childhood favorites and new ones. My mom used to make meatballs and rice. Beef meatballs simmered in a very, very sweet tomato sauce. The sauce is just tomato sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice, dried thyme, and black pepper. It's almost like candy.
We didn't have much money, so I ate a ton of Kraft Dinner. It's a specific brand of boxes macaroni and cheese and I still love it! They changed the flavor but it's still good.
These days I love burgers, teriyaki chicken, pizza, and German foods my mom made like schnitzel with mushroom gravy! I love to cook so each month there's a new favorite lol. Jambalaya was this month's discovery 😂

Everything looks yummy and so comforting! I love watching you eat with such relish, Shinichi.😊 I agree that our comfort foods often come from childhood.
Like your mother, my mom was an excellent cook--very into nutrition, freshness, balance, etc. in an era when many people weren't. I ate meat as a kid and, over all her fabulous healthy, plant-based meals, my favorites were the classic meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and a vegetable (and the meatloaf sandwiches the next day); melt-in-your mouth, super crisp, nongreasy, pan-fried chicken and fabulous potato salad; and an amazing Indian curry with multiple savory and sweet toppings, chutney, and cucumber raita. SO delicious and nostalgic. I hope Mom is cooking for happy multitudes out in the cosmos somewhere.❤

My family’s background is a large percentage of German but comfort food for me is Mexican. And macaroni and cheese 😊 My mom was an adventurous cook so we tried lots of different foods and different restaurants that a lot of people I grew up with would have never dreamed of eating. I don’t think it is at all strange to find comfort in foods your mom made when you were growing up. Makes perfect sense to me.

I love Japanese curry; we have a restaurant in Seattle, Rondo, that has the best katsu curry…beef…! I stay with mild though. I love spicy foods but my gastric system rebels sometimes. LOL
I truly love katsu, chicken is my favorite but I like pork as well. I do cook at home & I enjoy experimenting!
Another TH-camr introduced me to onigiri, particularly mentaiko. Yum!

Japanese comfort food for me would be chawanmushi, oyakodon, ramen, nabemono, and onigiri. I don't if they make the same kind of onigiri like our musubi in Hawaii. One of kari kari ume musubi at Marukai or at crunchy ume musubi at Mamaya. At Iyasume, I like ume musubi and green leaf musubi.

Where did you get that chicken? I want to try it when I come over, but I definitely want that kind, with the marinated chicken. I don’t really care for plain chicken or just salted chicken. ✌🏻💕😊
Also: tuna mayo onigiri is my fav, but I’ve only had a couple kinds.
In the US we have our own type of spaghetti as well, that is similar to a spaghetti bolognese, but it’s American not Italian. It’s typically spaghetti noodles, ground meat...beef or pork mostly, and a tomato sauce.... I personally make it with a tomato paste base. Then we usually eat it with grated Parmesan cheese on top. It is one of my comfort foods. 😁💕

One of my Japanese comfort food is pasta napolitan, together with kombu onigiri and tamago yaki. But my all time favourite would be yomogi daifuku. Just the one you can find at the convenience store.
I don't really have a Dutch comfort food, perhaps very salty drop (licorice), growing up my favourite dish was sweet and sour chicken at the local Chinese restaurant.

I think my favorite onigiri is mentaiko mayo and my second favorite is ume. My mom makes me ratatouille when I visit and I make that at home but probably the recipe of hers I make the most is gumbo. Both my parents and I tend to eat different foods than my mom made when I was a child (we are In the US).

When we were in Japan we learned to really love Onigiri. I was especially a fan the mayo tuna but the variety was impressive and it always made the best breakfast going down to whichever convenience store was close and grabbing a couple, one for breakfast and one for a snack later. Also, I got really addicted to japanese custard. Something about Japanese eggs, they are just so much better than american eggs and it's where I learned to really like soft eggs. Comfort foods for me tend to be really hearty foods I grew up with. Chicken Fried Steak sandwiches are one that I just have to have from time to time. Really good hot-out-of-the-fryer french fries. A good homemade chili with beans. A big bowl homemade pinto beans with onions and peppers and mexican spices.

My favorite comfort foods are also some of the ones my mother used to make for us. My favorite comfort food is fried fish with rice. Fried sardines too.I’m a vegetarian but I’d love to finally become vegan because what stops me from being a vegan is that I can’t stop eating fish. On my five different trips to Japan I have enjoyed all of these dishes, and actually they are all my favorites right there in front of you! The only one I don’t care for is the one the chef cooked for the western soldiers LOL being from America you would think that I liked spaghetti, but I hate it. I laugh and say that myself and my son were born in the wrong part of the world as Asian food has always been my preferred cuisine! I really love sushi, and will only eat it in Japan. American sushi doesn’t even compare to Japanese sushi. Tonkotsu was my first love when I came to Japan for the first time.

The comfort food you features helps families like mine where we have different eating styles and tastes ..I can have my meals vegetarian and add meat or chicken for my husband and my daughter. Secretly I’d like to make them all vegetarian 😂🤣

Hello, Sir. My name is Calvin and just wanted to say how much I enjoy your and your partner's channels. If I may ask, is there a name/recipe for the red rice dish and the spaghetti dish? Thank you, very much. I'm amazed with your command of the English language and would be remiss if I didn't also say, I find both of you very handsome. 🙂

I've been trying to get my mom to make Japanese curry for a while because I really want to try it, but she always says no (probably because she assumes that it's the same as Indian or Thai curry).

Most of my favorite food actually aren't the ones I had a lot of as a kid. I do crave some of my childhood food sometimes though but not often. Also as a kid meaty dishes were part of usual meals but I always found meat strange and gladly I changed my diet entirely to be completely vegetarian or even vegan when I was older and completely shocked and traumatized behind what meat actually was and how billions of innocent and intelligent and emotional animals are put through the worst kinds of torture we humans can't even imagine and kept in that state every single day and then killed as "human food". Best change I have made in my life to this day. Never missed what is called meat but in fact is the flesh of corpse of the said poor animals either (then again meat itself never has flavor, it's what the cooks add to it or mix with it or marinate it in etc. that is what holds the supposed taste).

Can you get gyoza in Japan that isn’t made with pork? Like veggie or chicken?
