    what if I pick a = 789 and b = -789? The sum is equal to 1 but the sum of the squares is vastly larger. In fact, it would seem that there is no maximum at all, just the minimum, eh?

      Only a minimum. You are correct. But the constraint limits the sum of the 2 numbers to be no greater than 1.

    Sorry, you found the MINIMUM, not the maximum. A=1, B=0 is already bigger. Redo.

      Good catch. Thank you. The equation is a parabola that opens upward, so it has to be a minimum.
