thank you, tomorrow morning I´m doing this same operation at the workshop... I was not sure about what´s inside this bottom bracket and now I have a clear view...
Great video! I just wanted to add that the circlips are 34mm and can be found in stainless steel on amazon which I need since everything rusts in the PNW. Both my CR-7 and my Hoo Koo use a 6003 2RS for the bearings as well but I will likely grab that kit when I get around to finally doing this work.
Stopped at 4:20 so I don't know if you're reusing the spindle. If so, go to the hardware store and get some longer than stock crank arm bolts. Thread the bolts in and hit on the bolts instead of the spindle. To drive out the bearing that's still in, use a socket extension of your preference. The spindle is not a removal tool. Be sure also to spray both sides with something stronger than WD40 for a few days prior to starting this process. Please advise viewers to wear safety glasses when working with circlips, and lastly, but should be first, is measure the spindle length that's exposed prior to disassembly to help with setting the chain line on reassembly. Just recently got the bearings and spindle removed from an 1995 Klein Fervor that's seen decades of elements and neglect.
So I have an oddity, a GF prototype from ‘91/‘92 that is closest in build to a Sphinx and uses this style of bb. Do you know if it’s possible to use a more modern pressfit, like an Ultrega SM-BB72-41B? Or are they strictly independent bearings and spindle? Also, great video and info!
Great question. To my knowledge there is no work around. This can be an issue if you spindle is damaged as they are a lot hard to find than the bearings.
I have used the bearings from specialty retro products multiple times. specialtyretroproducts.com/product/gary-fisher-and-klein-press-in-bottom-bracket-bearings-by-srp-press-fit/
I need to replace the bearings on my wifes RS-1. We have emailed about that frame you have. Ive not looked close enough but I did t see c-clips. Are they there and I just missed them?
It is a wheels manufacturing Bottom Bracket Press. They make multiple kits depending on what you all need to press in. I included a link to there site and the specific tool I used. wheelsmfg.com/presses-tools/presses-extractors.html www.jensonusa.com/Wheels-MFG-Bottom-Bracket-Bearing-Press-Red?loc=usa&gclid=CjwKCAjwrranBhAEEiwAzbhNtUwTrzPVeDY_pLViwdqFhlEVTpWcKZcqmXT3ZAwa_0N9ogA_Cm_enRoCkb8QAvD_BwE

Glad to hear it helped, have fun with the project.

Thanks for the info, I actually need some circlips for another early Gary fisher that needs new bearings also.

@@GringineerCycles thanks for the reply! Guess I’ll try a few different brands of bearing to see what gives the best result.

Can you provide a link or name of that press tool? I want to order one.
Thanks!
