In my Ukrainian school, our foreign literature class was taught by a teacher who had come from Russia. I came from a poor family and had to entertain myself, so I learned to read very early, around the age of 3.5-4. I loved books about Neznaika, pirates, and was a huge fan of Gogol. I laughed out loud reading “Dead Souls,” “Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka,” or his short stories. During our first foreign literature class in 5th grade, I told the teacher she was wrong-Gogol was Ukrainian. Her face turned red, and she asked why we were studying Gogol in foreign literature. I responded by asking why, when I told my Russian acquaintances the story “The Nose,” none of them laughed. I had lived in a village until 5th grade, and for us, poor kids who usually had nothing sweet except sugar, the time of Christmas carols and sweet candies felt magical. She scolded me in front of the whole class, trying to show how foolish I was, but I refused to agree with her and refused to let the Russians claim Gogol. She hated me until the end of school and tried to fail me. But when she asked, “What did you read over the summer?” I would answer with “Three volumes of Neznaika and ‘Age of Pirates: Captain Blood’.” She called me to the front of the class to retell what I had read, and that was my moment to shine. I enjoyed recounting everything in detail, and after the summer holidays, I was the only one in class who could retell what I had read 😂
I first heard about "Dead Souls" from Vlad Vexler, citing the last pages "Oh Rus - where are you riding to in your crazy horse cart...". I found it so impressive that I bought the book, and now it returns here again!

merry Christmas to you Jonathan and Anna, what a perfect combo for this day! Last night i watched a few min's of Anna and felt so much better. (btw, Anna's elegance and passion is like nothing i've ever been exposed to, she has all the right stuff!) The struggle for Ukraine is, i sense, about to actually start getting 'meaningful' support finally after such pain and agony over particularly the last half year of dramatically increased Russian atrocities and destruction. Ru has been actually seemingly sorta measured over time, only destroying so much. That literally gave the allies an option to start to intervene much harder, but they didnt take it, bcuz they are not comprehending strategic thinking, game-theory-thinking and other concepts. Those of us who are middle aged and studied enough history, probably fairly accurately sense what's up. If the allies haven't been secretly readying a full defense of Ukraine militarily, then they/we are the biggest fools in modern history, and i will NOT be part of that. If i were not past my physical prime, i'd have paid to be trained to fight, so id be truly capable, bcuz many men like me have the killer spirit, but no training at all here, bcuz our gen was not steeped in military culture at all!
That is quite disturbing. The suffering on basic needs, and then - on the other hand - making TH-cam videos from this content. OK, he's trying to help, but it reflects the state of the RU society, I guess. There is none.
Before the war I used to spend one or two months every year in Kyiv, because I studied Russian and for me it was easier and more pleasant to go Ukraine than to Russia. It was then when I discovered that my favourite "Russian" artists and writers were Ukrainians, almost with no exception, and it all made sense to me because I discovered it was the Ukrainian culture (and people) what I liked and felt very close to me, and not the Russian. I went even further, realising little by little that the so called Russian culture does NOT actually exist! the more I digged into it the more I saw most of it was stolen or rebranded (just like they do with natural resources). Btw, it was very notorious and ironic that when I tried to practise my Russian in Ukraine everyone helped me a lot, even unknown people on the streets, whereas in Russia what I got was people always making fun of me when I tried to practise my Russian (just to mention one of the many massively unpleasant things I experienced with Russians). I started to brutally loath Russia, even before the war, and not because of Ukrainian influence, after being a lover of Russian culture for two decades. But the new love for "Ukrainian culture", something so fresh for me, totally made up for that. Btw, it was then when I realised that in most soviet-Russian fairytale movies they always make obnoxious remarks about Ukrainians (calling them ignorant peasants, and things like that)... that tells you a lot.

It's also funny that in a village in Russia you could easily tell who was Russian and who was a Volga German ;-)), even though the Germans were discriminated against there too. You could tell by the houses and gardens, and that was probably still relatively recently, before many Volga Germans had left Russia again.
Here in Sweden we have Russians who are really good at Swedish - illegals. Often they open Russian Orthodox churches near socially important businesses or airports 🤔
I am one of Anna's regulars and the only opposition figure I am aware of is yer man Pomerov who leads the armed resistance, the only good muscovites ?? Heroyam Slava
In 2007-2013 I worked with both a Ukrainian (Lydia) and a Russian (Tatyana) who'd migrated to the US recently. While they didn't know each other they could both speak Russian as a common language. Lydia did mention that the translation sometimes didn't work and had to use the English word. I could see them both struggling with it but they both wanted to learn. While I don't know either language I was one of the few who had almost zero problem with understanding their Ukrainian or Russian accents in English. For the record though I very much prefer the Ukrainian accent. Much better than the harsher Russian or even Belarusian. (German is also too rough, fwiiw.)
Regarding Anna's request. I would like to hear what she thinks of Ilya Ponomarev. I think he makes sense when he talks about the way how a change can be achieved in Russia
I have to say that Ukraine is being unfairly criticized for nonrenewing the gas pipeline going through Ukraine. I would have shut off the gas flow the day we were attacked. I understand this will be a $5 billion blow to Russian income over the year. I'm also glad to hear that Ukraine has received the first billion dollars of cash to allow Ukraine to direct it to the most useful military arms. Slava Ukraine!
Ilja Ponomarev is one of the people you should meet and have a show with, ask your questions and understand him more. He was the only political leader who went to Ukraine and is contributing now to the military in favor of Ukraine.
@SiliconCurtain yes I saw him on your program. I'm sorry but I forgot to correct that I was addressing this as a response to Anna because of the comment that she still not trusts any russian political opposition figures, but I think there are russians who are truly on the side of ukranians and yes can be trusted. I understand it is hard from Anna's point of view as a ukranian but this man and others have proven that they can be trusted. As russians they are doing their part in this unfair war I believe, and yes I believe opposition can do much more, especially inside Russia to awaken the zombified and oppressed population, and unfortunately this has to be through negative reinforcement.
On 23 August 2023, exactly two months after the rebellion, Prigozhin was killed along with nine other people when a business jet crashed in Tver Oblast, north of Moscow.
Russia lost this war in its first week. Just think about Russias position in the world and what it needs. It already has more territory and resources than it can use. What Russia really needs is a larger and more educated population and more technological development. Back in 2021 Russia could have easily made peace and frozen the conflict as it existed at the time and just concentrated on exporting their oil and gas and getting rich.
From Venice I give you all my solidarity I have learned to much from your story and and I have to say that you are so gentle so cautious and so well educated That surprise me every time I see you
Thanks for discussing Gogol satirical portrait of Russia in his writings. He and Bulgakov taught me in the west how to read for messages the authors were trying to get past soviet censorship

It's also funny that in a village in Russia you could easily tell who was Russian and who was a Volga German ;-)), even though the Germans were discriminated against there too. You could tell by the houses and gardens, and that was probably still relatively recently, before many Volga Germans had left Russia again.
Some of us Yanks call him the Kremlin Gremlin. He's punier than a goblin.

Slava Ukraini !!!

I think he makes sense when he talks about the way how a change can be achieved in Russia
posting at xmas - what a champion!
I have - two interviews with him already on the channel and more in the new year!
Thank you Anna , you are so inspiring , like the Ukrainian Nation !
For Free Ukraine féw more centuries
On 23 August 2023, exactly two months after the rebellion, Prigozhin was killed along with nine other people when a business jet crashed in Tver Oblast, north of Moscow.
😮😢😅
Like Rasputin and the Tsars , ugly but like a shaman of evil 👿 a star in Russian mythology 😮😢😅
Thanks!
Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦 💙 💛
Great interview

Would Mr Kasparov be a good opposition leader?
Very interesting. gj. thx.
Merry Christmas everybody.
Thanks for discussing Gogol satirical portrait of Russia in his writings. He and Bulgakov taught me in the west how to read for messages the authors were trying to get past soviet censorship
