I could see the EEPC being paired up with something like eXoDOS lite and being a great option for DOS gaming, or even some older strategy games like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 or Age of Empires. It's a neat little machine for sure.

Great video. I bought an EeePC 1005HB 'Seashell' back when it was first released. It had the Atom N280 at 1.66Mhz with 1Gb of RAM, a bigger screen and a 160Gb mechanical HDD. It was such a small and sexy machine in comparison to most laptops. The keyboard was great too, but the screen resolution was weird. I still have it, now with a bigger battery, an SSD and 2Gb of RAM, running Windows 10, although I might put 98SE on it for some retro gaming.

As luck would have it, I received a very similar machine yesterday! It needs a new hard drive, and I will definitely be maxing out the ram. Can't wait to see their performance side by side. Looks like a very fun machine.

I regret throwing mine away when its hardware got too outdated for my taste. I'm not a modder so I didn't know how to upgrade it.
I really wish some company would release a netbook now with the same stats. I loved how tiny and lightweight and long-lasting it was, and I adored the feel of the keyboard, and most importantly, that hinge. That huge hinge is just so incredibly sturdy and chunky looking.
The thing I want to do the most on a netbook is write. My imaginary perfect writing PC is this exact hardware, but with a black and white e-paper screen, and maybe modern storage abilities. There is a company that makes a device sort of like this for writers, but its screen is too small for my taste.

Weirdly I have done basically the same upgrades (does not have the built in 4GB so no worries there) and then proceeded to install the same games! I have actually had it "running" Windows 10 as well. I have the original Eeepc 700 or 2G. The built in 2 GB SSD soldered to the motherboard was damaged and was no longer recognized by the Bios, so I boot Windows 7 via a 32 Gb Compact Flash card on an external usb card reader. Still works, but a bit slower than with the built in storage. I only use it for streaming online radio and I got no problem running "PC Radio" apps. Also playing music and video runs smoothly as long as your video is in the standard 800x480p resolution (720p lags on my Eeepc 700!). The problem with these mighty small netbooks are the plastic casing, they become brittle overtime. Be extra careful dismantling, or else you'll get cracked plastic when you apply force prying up the panels.

There are some drivers out there that will allow the display to show a scaled 800x600 or even 1024x768. Text looks rough, but it improves compatibility for some stuff. And sometimes I just ran 640x480 for games that supported it, and the screen was relatively happy with that.

Why did you use/need to keep the SD card inserted again? You just used it to install Windows ¿95? It'll boot off the SD card but not the internal SSD?

    • @PNPRetro

Best guess is, since it booted off the SD card during the Windows XP install, and the SD card was writable, the XP installer identified the SD card as the C drive. So, when it went to install the boot loader, it did it on the SD card.
