Throwing Away Someone Else's Mail Is A Felony - Here's How To Get Rid Of It Legally

  • Sick of opening up your mailbox only to find mail for the people who used to live there? Here's how to stop it - write "Return to Sender" on the mail, or "No longer at this address." Also, mark out any bar codes. Then pop back into a mailbox. The piece will come up as undeliverable and will be hand-inspected.

This is what bothers me, not taking an action, should never be illegal. I shouldn't have to go through the trouble of returning a letter to the post office. If it pops up in my post office and isn't mine, I shouldn't have to do anything with it. Making it illegal to throw away mail that was delivered to you by mistake is unconstitutional.

RTS doesn’t work where I live. I have sent a dozen letters back, and they always keep ending up in my mailbox. I go to the post office and explain it to the postmaster with a promise they will resolve it only to find the same letters in my mailbox 2 days later. I must have sent the same letters out five times already. The oldest letter I currently have is from April.
I have contacted him through the neighbors, the real estate agent, and his lawyer, and he refuses to change his address because I think he’s trying to hide from paying child support. I have a stack of letters for him in a drawer that is 3lbs. I’m burning all his letters this weekend, but keeping his Christmas cards on the mantle out of spite.

Doesn't work. Putting "return to sender" or "person NEVER lived at this address", only seems to generate more the next day. We've lived at this address for over 35 years! Was told by our Idiot Postal Carrier (that's his name) that he couldn't do anything about it because it was computer generated, so there is NO actual person inspecting the address. There is just a computer that slaps a yellow "incorrect" sticker on it misdirecting it to my mailbox. Yesterday, I received the man's W2 form. I did mail it to his employer with a note asking him to please get this fixed. Today we get their Water/Sewer and Garbage bill and a card saying that his children are out of compliance with vaccines and their Macy's bill. Tomorrow I'm off to the USPS to file an official complaint. Wish me well.

This previous resident feels entitled to my mail box while he and his girlfriend drift from place to place. He started a fight with me and the neighbor when I was going to get his mail for him. He shouts from the car “check for my mail” I said “yeah I know” and he shouts “What??” and then he and his girlfriend come at me and the neighbor. The cop was a prick to us too. He was bias saying I must have deserved it. Pure trash. I’m still getting their mail. The fact that I can go to prison for throwing their mail away is insanity. I told the post office and they said there is nothing they can do about it. So one day a lady comes to my door asking me if I’m still receiving their mail. I said yes and she took care of it.
