- This cold process soap making tutorial explains many of the aspects of trace. Including clearly showing how to spot emulsion (emulsification), what false trace is, how it happens and what to do about it, the different levels of trace and when they should be used and the main causes of acceleration in cold process soap.
I have tried to include as much information as I can without turning the video into some sort of epic 3-hour affair, but there will be a few things that I may not have included, for instance, I have given examples of what to use each type of trace for, not an exhaustive list of every soaping technique and the trace that works the best for them all.
I try to give lots of hints and tips in all of my videos, so hopefully, you can use some of the techniques in this cold process soap making tutorial in your own soap making. The information given is based on what works for me, however, there are lots of variables associated with cold process soap making and I therefore, take no responsibility for the results achieved when using the techniques or methods explained in these tutorials. Great video, thanks. My question is, does the mixer pull you down when you turn it on, because I get the impression it isn't? Mine has 300w and only one speed, but I can never cycle with it because it pulls me to the bottom as a vacuum. That's why I often reach the middle track too fast. 😒
I found this tutorial extremely helpful - thank you for sharing your expertise! I have had a lot of trouble getting consistent results. But today, after watching you’re video, my batter stayed fluid for well over an hour 😀. Do you have any tips for maintaining temperature for that long to avoid false trace? My batter seems to congeal below about 95 deg F (35 deg C). Thanks!

Thanks a million for this. As a newbie I've missed emulsion by a mile lots of times and with practice have gotten more control over trace and my batters. I have a question,I am making cp soap with olive,coconut palm and castor oil,my colors are turmeric and indigo and english clay(all dispersed in olive oil),I was making very small batch to practice for my large one and noticed as soon as I added my lemon grass essential it accelerated the trace to the point I could not pour my colored batter and became a mess,I love lemon grass and would like to use it,any advice?can I add my essential to my oils before I add the lye?would that help,I would really appreciate your advice
@@bahramassary2340 Hmmm. lemongrass essential oil is not known to speed up trace. I presume it's from a decent supplier? Any type of dry ingredient will though, so the clay and even the turmeric and indigo if they are all in powder form. You may find it helps to disperse those earlier, at least 24 hours and quite often dispersing them in distilled water helps to combat the absorbing effect they have. I do find indigo a complete pain to disperse in water though. For turmeric and paprika I actually do an infusion and then add the infused oils to my soap, that way you get a great colour, no acceleration and no speckles in your soap.
You can add the EO early but your problem there is that it's in longer, so if it is what's causing your acceleration it would actually be worse. Why not just try a tiny bit of your plain batter, no additives or colour with a few drops of EO on it's own and see what happens, at least that will show you if your EO is the problem and then you could maybe swap brand, as I know typically it's not an accelerator. I saw many videos on soap making for beginners, but this is the best one! I finally understood how to check the emulsion, the moment of trace... I made soap 5 times only, but 4 times from 5, I mixed from thin to medium in vain, to have at the end of pouring a thick paste. Thank you, Lisa!
Woohoo, that is excellent news, I'm so pleased it helped. I remember when I started out I actually spent a lot of time trying to spot emulsion and truly understand it. I really feel that is one of the biggest skills a soap maker can have because it then gives you so much more control over your soap.
@@IDreamInSoap I finally found time to make a bar of soap, applying what I learnt from you and I really felt a "queen of trace". I controlled everything from the beginning to the end and I could even play with two colors and use a big rectangular mold (until now I used only small molds and I was always in a big hurry not loosing the thin paste to be able to pour it). Many many thanks again!! I'm dreaming in the next bars.

Thank you for this video. I started making soap recently, but it's been very hit and miss. I watch videos where the soap makers make their soap, divide it up and add colours and fragrances and still have time to do fancy things with it. My batches would 'seize' so quickly I'd struggle to get it into the mould. I was using a recipe with a 33% water discount, but added more water today, watched carefully for the emulsion stage, and poured it at a very light trace (I'm only doing simple soaps at the moment - layers and embeds will hopefully come at a later date!). It's already firming up nicely. Your tip on the temperature probably helped too. I was mixing at 90f as the recipe I was using told me to, but it was much better at 80f. I don't think I'll ever get to the stage of making soaps like yours - they are real works of art. I have to say thank you to Edens Secret soap - she mentioned you in a recent video which is how I got here. I really want to get good at this, it's becoming an obsession! The batch I made before this was my worst yet - it was splitting in the mould and crumbled as I cut it, despite it being the exact same recipe I've used before so it can't be lye-heavy. Can I rebatch it at a later date?
HI Cat Woman, I'm so pleased my video has helped you out. Yes stick blending and temperature are two of the biggest cuprits of having a batter that's too thick. Fragrance oils can also have a major effect. If you use soapcalc(or whatever lye calculator) check your ratio of saturated to unsaturated fats, you will find it on the top right hand side when you view a recipe in Soapcalc, if you can aim for something like 40:60 that will give you a nice recipe to work with., Mine is actually 41:59,higher saturated fats (simplistically hard oils) will speed upi your trace.
Providing you worked everything out correctly in your crumbly batch you can rebatch it, just check that it's not lye heavy though as crumbly is often a sign of that.

I had a pretty thick trace for a soap that needed a more thin trace for the mold, I ended up with too many air pockets. It was clear I needed more technique to spot emulsion and how to treat the batter afterwards and I found this type of knowledge in this video, so thank you a bunch!
