I wouldn’t say stolen because they could’ve offered him $10 billion dollars and he still would’ve rather played with Ohtani and the Dodgers. The Phillies also do not have a rich history of Japanese players.
As a Phillies fan, it hurts that we don't. The Phillies are making more of an effort with Japanese players, but they're still behind the 8 ball when it comes to them. They didn't get Senga, Othani, Yamamoto, or any other Asian pitches the last 2 offseasons. They like their Latin players well enough but have work to do with it comes to the Asian demographic.
The answer is Hideo Nomo. The dodgers have essentially secured most if not all of the young Japanese talent, its been an investment for the past 30 years

Let's go DODGERS 2024 !!! ⚾️⚾️⚾️ ROGER, The LOS ANGELES DODGER
Im sure there were a lot of factors that contributed to Yamamoto’s decision but I think at the end of the day, it’s like this: would you rather be given $1M to work in the place you want to be or be given $2M to work in a place ya don’t want to be. There’s not really a wrong answer here, it’s all personal preference and Yamamoto preferred LA.
Also, West Coast is obviously closer to Japan, which I guess you could argue is irrelevant if you're flying first class anyways, but still. And SoCal has the largest Japanese population in North America. They may not have been contributing factors but they sure didn't hurt.
I think the answers are pretty obvious: - Think about the clubhouse situation of both these teams. Dodgers have a manager who’s half Japanese, they have Shohei, his interpreter and of course the city which has a very diverse culture. Compare that to Philly which just seems like a white college fraternity. Just imagine Yamamoto standing in the dugout talking to only his interpreter and really only fitting in based on his success (I don’t know if he speaks English but I don’t think that would change much). - Kenta Maeda. I can almost guarantee that Yamamoto, who was a big Maeda fan growing up, asked Maeda about life in LA and playing for Roberts and he likely gave them both flying endorsements and told him, “look at my situation now. There’s no comparison between life for us in LA compared to Minnesota”. I’m sure he probably talked to Darvish too, who said he would’ve resigned in LA if not for the game 7 breakdown and obviously loves So Cal (hence the extension with the Padres). Philly isn’t for everyone.
The Dodgers have consistently shown interest in Japanese players. The list from the top of my head are .. Hideo Nomo Hiroki Kuroda Takashi Saito Nakahiro Nakamura Kenta Maeda That’s huge in comparison to a lot of teams. Plus most of those are pitchers and have had success. Add in Yu Darvish and Shohei now, the Dodgers are the team most known in Japan. That counts a lot.. don’t be surprised if Roki Sasaki signs in LA too..
Before watching this video, I hope this is just click bate. I’m a Phillies fan but I knew we had a very slim chance of getting him, especially after Ohtani signed with the Dodgers. I think most Phillies fans weren’t surprised when he went to LA.
Clickbait? I don't clickbait, it's just the truth. The Dodgers stole him from Philly by being a team he just presumably wanted to be on despite the Phillies offering more money than ANYONE
Just watched and the Dodgers stealing him from the Phillies is a click bated title. Players choose teams with lesser offers all the time. Would the Padres consider the Phillies as thieves for signing Trea Turner for less money than what they offered? Either way, I love your videos ❤️⚾️
If this story is even remotely true there is no reason why the Phillies shouldn’t sign any of the top remaining guys. That is of course if they’re being realistic. Thanks SCOTT.
The "team is mega-stacked with superstars" answer is probably correct. The Phillies and Yankees are fielding good teams that could go all the way, and the Mets are a few good pitchers away from being on their level. Shohei and the staggering payroll of the Dodgers probablt ensure he will be in the playoffs every year for the next ten.
I will only say that this man Is a great picher when he proves it in a full season bc he has not faced any mlb hitters yet I don't hype up people until they show it
no the dodgers simply had the best hand to put down for yoshi. the pitch meeting had freeman, betts, smith, friedman and ohtani. no team could have brought that heat to a pitch meeting.
Hideo Nomo is for Japan what Fernando Valenzuela is for Mexico. You can't think about one without the other. The Dodgers not knowingly (?) secured fanbases on both countries; no wonder the young players from those parts of the world wants to play in LA
He’ll still make more money palying in NY or LA. The top markets for building his “brand.” At his age, his potential endorsement income in either of those markets is practically immeasurable.

Yep. Not sure why nobody wants to acknowledge this, while the reported offer has not been officially confirmed by the team it just makes so much sense that this was the "full throttle" signing they were hoping for, considering both their history of Japanese players (pitchers especially - Nomo, Dice-k, Tazawa + Koji just to name the ones that immediately come to mind) but also the current home of recent NPB signing Masataka Yoshida.... I suppose finishing last in the ALE 4 out of the last 5 seasons makes the "passionate fanbase w/storied history" pitch ring a lot hollower than it once did :/
